It openly accepts the childishness of the demographic and doesn't even try to avoid it. I think the whole setting has something beatiful about it, and it's not such a dogged and trying-to-be-serious battle story. Nor does it try to be deep -because it indeed isn't- and combines this with a lovely style of arts. Overall it has the feeling of a christmas fairy tale to me.
It's somewhat coming straight to the point. All this story about heart is pretty much what Bleach/Naruto/OP are, too, if you look at it. No realism whatsoever in these series, it's all about the protagonists succeeding when they're determined enough and bring in enough emotions to use enough powers. Tegami Bachi is the first one to tell this fact right away without disguising it because the characters shoot their own heart.

This thing looks pretty real to me, in a different way, obviously.

I don't have 20 top mangas, so...

1) Naruto (still the best overall manga i've read)
2) Beelzebub (A really good comedy manga. Best i've read in a while)
3) Fairy Tail (Everything good about shounen in condensed and purified form)

4) Claymore
5) Veritas (I put this on here in the distant hope it's the story will go on.)
6) One Piece
7) Bleach
8) The Breaker/The Breaker New Waves (New Waves is a vast improvement on it's predecessor and i think the predecessor was pretty good)
9) Ao No Exorcist
10) The World God Only Knows
11) Onihime VS
12) Sun-ken Rock (Promising but it's going to drop right off the list if it doesn't pull it's story together into a better plot soon.)
13) Ubel Blatt (It would be higher if it weren't on hiatus)
14) Superior†
15) Nurarihyon no Mago
16) Mahou Sensei Negima! (A solid shounen story that delivers it's story with a childish charm.)
17) Rosario+Vampire (A ecchi series with decent characters, but it's tendency to rely on the ecchi bit hurts it's narrative more than a little.)
18) To-Love-Ru/To-Love-Ru Darkness (A true ecchi series. It maks no excuses about what it is and in a way i respect that about it.)
19) Berserk (Great manga that drags because of it's sluggish pace.)
20) Vinland Saga (Great art, solid characters, and a fairly unimpressive story. Plus, once you recognize who the main character is based after it's kinda hard to ignore the obvious way the story will end. That's the risk with going with a historical based story i suppose.)

I have a rather unfavorable opinion of senien story telling as a whole at the moment. It seems to me that, of the stuff i've read, the authors spend so much time going out of there way to be as gritty as possible that they end up neglecting the little things like cohesive character development or an intelligent plot.

Using over the top brutality, sex, and gore to hide the fact that the underlying story is just not very good. Much the same way Shounen series sometimes use Ecchi.

Very occasionally i'll come across one that does everything right and delivers a quality yet mature themed story like Berserk or Ubel Blatt. But more often than not i hit something like Gantz, which spends so much time trying to be "adult" that it ends up neglecting and undermining it's own story and character development.

managed to read some mangas since my last post here so i will update my top mangas:

it is difficult to rank the mangas that we like , for me withouth any doubts Naruto is first, about the others definetely One Piece is when talking about the typical shonen for me the second and for that it is pretty good. Bakuman and death note both made by the same guys are different for the normal shonens stories but they are very good and for that they are pretty good , about toriko ,fairy tail and beelzebub they are obviously for me lower than Naruto or One Piece but that is not something bad cuz beat Naruto or One Piece is extremely difficult. those three are still pretty good. recomend my top mangas to everyone

I like Gintama a lot but i've always found the manga hard to read for some reason.

Maybe it's all the puns and jokes that don't translate easily to english or maybe it's the sheer density of the text on each page, but i've always found the anime easier to get into. Probably because they spread everything out so i get the chance to comprehend how hilarious it all is.

yeah i also found a bit hard to read and it is mostly because of the density of text and i also find this first chapters not as funny as i was thinking it would be , and if it is hard to you , for me is even harder cuz i am portuguese and although my english isnt that bad it isnt that good, and i dont know the meaning of lots of the words and i make alot of basic mystakes ;( but thats one of the reasons why i am reading mangas , which is so i can improve my english
i would try to go for the anime but nowadays i find much more interesting reading the mangas, Naruto was the only one that i started from the anime , but on my oppinion Naruto anime is very good, on that time , that i started watching it, i didnt even knew what a manga was and i saw it non stop ( which it wouldnt have happen for example if it was OP , that i find the anime super boring , much worse than the manga), so i will still try to read gintama manga , but in case i dont managed to get into very well , will try the anime

i still havent read BLEACH till the latest chapters but i am still going to rank it

1.Naruto - 20 - Perfect!
2.One Piece - 19 - Find it a bit inferior comparing to Naruto , and only cuz of that i won't give it a 20, so i would say almost perfect
3.Slam Dunk - 20 - i rank it inferior comparing to OP but i give it a better mark , cuz here i am talking about a sport manga and Slam Dunk is everything a sport manga needs , so i give it a 20 i just think it ended too soon
4.Death Note - 18 - At sometimes it was a bit boring but it is definitely one of the best mystery mangas ever , characters like L and Light are one of the best i have ever come across
5.Toriko - 17 - Compared to Naruto and OP i think it is a bit inferior but it is still quite good, but i recommend, you only read it after you finished eating!
Never try to read it with an empty stomach :P
6.Fairy Tail - 17 - Also a quite good typical shounen with a lot of comic moments
7.Bakuman - 17 - You like manga? dah, of course you like , cuz if you dont , you never be on this forum lol, so why not read Bakuman, a manga that is about 2 kids ( now adults ) that want to become mangakas ? with some romance and comedy it makes bakuman pretty good and interesting to read, and is a good away of knowing more about how Shonen Jump works
8.Enigma - 17 - until now it has being pretty good and interesting and can't wait for more!
9.Magico - ? -despite the fact that i read only 2 chapters found it good. Doesnt make much sense to rank it , but this is based the way i feel about the mangas that i read or read on the current moment so .......
10.BLEACH -14 - find it extremely overrated ! the plot doesn't develop much
11.Beelzebub -14 - find it quite boring now, but it is still pretty funny
12.Monster -14 - didn't like much the end ,cuz it didn't conclude much and left the thinks wide open

I respect others people choice but i must admit some people are really shonen jump made. the half of their top 20 mangas is a copy-paste of mangas published in shonen jump. There is alot of pretty good mangas/manhwas around, it's kinda sad to see some people limited only on shonen jump and on popular mangas.

And i am finding difficult to decide

So i decided to write my top on a different way.

Absolutely Amazing

Naruto -> it has moments of course that this doesn't happen , but in the general in my opinion it is the best shounen out there and the story is simply amazing.

Very very good

One Piece -> It's an awesome story with very good characters, that had some arcs that are just "amazing" though other might be a bit boring. The second best shounen out there for me , so everyone that likes shounen should clearly read it !

Slam Dunk -> One of my first experiences with a sports manga and i loved it ! It's a very awesome manga with a lot of comedy moments but also serious one. After i start reading it that i realize why WSJ jump had his sales go down after it end. Together with Dragon Ball , those 2 were the best mangas of WSJ of that time. So read it

Death Note -> Though some parts might have been a bit boring , in the overall it is a very good manga with some characters that i will never forget. A manga with a lot of mystery and suspense very well done.

Very Good

Bakuman -> A manga about Mangakas , the ones that created Death Note. It's a very good one , with a very nice story and it's a must for everyone that likes to read mangas.

Vinland Saga -> A very good manga with the most awesome art that i have saw until now. The only problem is that it is a monthly manga.
But the story is very well done and the characters are very realistic ! A must for everyone that likes Seinen !

Claymore -> Just like Vinland Saga it is a monthly manga so that is the most negative thing about it ! The story is pretty good and though the characters might be hard to identify sometimes , this mangas really deserves to be more popular ! I am not going to be spoiler so i can only recommend you to read it

Toriko -> Though i can't call it right now a very good manga , i expect it to reach this "level" soon. It has a lot of potential and though the general idea of the story is simple , i am expecting to see Toriko take Bleach Spot in the "3 most popular mangas" soon.

Good Mangas

Fairy Tail -> A very nice story and with nice characters . The plot is still very simple though there is already out a considerable ammount of chapters. But eventually Mashima is going to start telling us and developing the plot .

Magico -> Though it has only 11 chapters out , i am expecting a lot from it and i have really enjoy it so far.

Enigma -> It's a good manga, with a lot of suspense and with good characters. I still expecting to see more from it to take more conclusions, but until now it has been at least worth of seeing.

Sket Dance -> Though i am only at chapter 40, i have enjoyed it so far ! And Sket Dance has very good and well done characters , some of them are just epic. It's a manga "similar" to Gintama in the way that you can at least expect it to make you laugh !

Beelzebub -> Though i don't have the same interest about it any more it is a manga with some very good moments. And it definitely deserves a shot if you like shounen mangas.

I haven't read that many manga compared to some of the veterans here so I will limit myself to a top 10

1 : Haruka-na machi e by Taniguchi. That's one of my first manga, it gave me the will to learn more about them and Japan. And it is a marvelous story. Taniguchi others works are also extremely good and I strongly recommend them.
2 : Nausicaa by Miyasaki. Well the animation master deserve it's place to the top. Nausicaa is simply a must read
3 : Monster by Naoki Urasawa. Another masterpiece, it was hard to decide if I prefer it over 20th century Boys, but even if both are great, I think I prefer Monster. Following Dr Tenma on his struggle to discover the truth was breathtaking.
4 : GTO by Tōru Fujisawa. Another classic, but the humor, the characters and the originality of this manga are still at the top
5 : One Piece by Eichiiro Oda. Well it is only this low because it is unfinished. But yeah what has not been said about One Piece greatness.
6 : NonNonBâ by Chikuma Shobō. Another of my early manga. I simply love the design of this mangaka. And the story is full of kindness and naivity.
7 : Fullmetal alchemist by Hiromu Arakawa. I guess everyone know about this great manga.
8 : Gintama by Hideaki Sorachi. It seems this manga finally start to get the place it deserve on this forum. More and more users say they like it and that makes me very happy. Gintama is just a monument dedicated to humour and craziness. I'm so glad it exists
9 : History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi by Hajime Kamegaki. My favorite battle manga. The adventure of this poor Kenichi are really funny. And seing him tortured by his masters every week is only for our joy
10 : Kami no Shizuku by Tadashi Agi and Shu Okimoto : A manga about wine. I guess I can only forgive all its little weaknesses
