I hope it will be like this.:) It would actually fit Zoro's character.:) Maybe he will open his eye if in the upcoming chapters he will have to face Tashigi?:) Maybe it would be because he would be surprised not only because of seeing her, but also because he managed to develop her swordsmanship to a great degree.:)

We will get an explanation sooner or later. It's kind of like that facial scar Luffy has, even if he got it in a ridiculous manner we will hear about it though I'm sure Zoro's story will be slightly more epic. I believe we will find out the truth about wether his eye still works the first time he has to put his bandanna on, since we know he will be completely serious against whoever he is fighting.

nah, he already put his bandana on when they started fighting the fodder-fishmenpirates in the plaza.

I am actually surprised in One Piece that more characters DON'T have an eye patch. The reason real pirates almost every second person had an eye patch was not due to losing an eye(some were though) but it was to condition one eye to be in darkness so when on an enemy ship they would often have to go under where there is no light(lamps if any would be smashed) so they would take patch off and have an eye conditioned for the dark.

I am really surprised Oda never added anything like that yet.

As for Zoro, he probably had his eye cut and that's it.
This is the best theory we've gotten though, maybe to train himself to fight in the dark he closed his eye. If it does become relevant it will probably have to do with this. Also if i recall one loses depth perception with only one eye, so for his swordsmanship to still be as strong as it is while losing an eye or with one eye would be badass, would make him into a monster when he finally opens it if its not just a lost eye.

To think of it again.. one more theory comes to mind... We have not seen mihawk after time skip yet.. so it might be a case that they were attacked by someone.. and something has happened to mihawk and zoro managed with one eye gone to survive...

May be after akainu became the in charge he might have thought that marine does not need schichibukai like mihawk who does not care about the government... Moriah got on hit list and was tried to be anihiliated... kuma already turned into a cyborg who takes orders... doflamingo is a pet... buggy will be a weak schichibukai who will again be a pet to governement :p ... hancock and her island is on mercy of world govt since world govt have ships that can travel in calm belt .... so only remaining one is mihawk... in these two years there is a chance that he may have got attacked...

Eye of the Demon

This theory is solid, and I will add to it, and since he has already explained zoro's abiliy then I will leave him out.

Rayleigh-I always wondered why they called him the Dark King. Dark implies that he is or was evil, but we have seen Rayleigh in flashbacks at different points and he didn't seem to be evil.

The only reason I believe they called him Dark King is because of his power or technique. The guy said in the youtube video that Zoro could beholding the asura in his eye from the cursed sword, and the reason for the slash on his eye allows him to keep his eye closed to control it.

Rayleigh has a scar over his right eye, and at first I thought it was nothing, but then I think Rayleigh could have the same power of a demon and that's why he is called the Dark King because he was so terrifying in his demon form so to speak

Shililew-When he is first introduced, he seems to have one of his eyes closed. I think he has the same ability, but he has mastered the ability to control his cursed sword, just like Mihawk and Rayleigh so he doesn't need to keep his eye closed.

Mihawk- Look at Mihawk eyes, they are strange to began with, so maybe his eyes helped him focus and he didn't need to close his eye to control the demon from the cursed sword

Merged both threads since they deal with the same subject.

I don't think there's any secret power behind Zoro's left eye, honestly... but I also doubt it's truly gone simply because Oda made sure no character even mentioned it once. I mean, after 2 years it would be pretty reasonable to hear Luffy or Sanji or someone else ask Zoro what happened to his left eye... but nobody did. That's basically what Oda always does when he has a surprise in store... he never talks about it until it's the right time to show it in all its glory. If it were truly gone, at least one character would have brought up the topic already and got an answer for that.

That's my 2 cents, of course.

Not a bad theory, but I think it's unlikely there will be many swordsmen with demon-related powers. About Rayleight title, Zoro sure may have appeared to be a monster for his past enemies.

Pirates had eye patches so that they could adapt to the dark quickly by closing the eye that's normally open and opening the eye covered with the eye patch.
I don't think that's exactly the case with Zoro, but I do think when he opens up his eye, he will gain improvement in sight and focus and that sort of things. Only when he gets super serious.

Maybe Zoro's eye needs to stay closed, and is a reminder of his failure. I can see Mihawk inflicting that wound, so Zoro prolly keeps it like that, to always remind himself of his shortcomings.

or he keeps it closed because he hasn't faced any challenge yet, and maybe that eye gives him super sight or something.

hafe you ever fought with one eye closed? its almost impossible its almost as woers as hafing a limb cut off... its a realy hard handycap i can only imagin that it will be open again at some point.. maybe its just for training purposes or mihawk eye but it sure as hell not possible for him to overcome mihawk with only one eye

Fujitora may be like daredevil but zoro sure as hell is not..

Now let's wait for Oda to troll us and just reveal in a comical way that his eyelid is closed is because he is just missing an eye due to intense training. In other words, he is just missing an eyeball. This would honestly make more sense to me than containing some asura demon in his eye socket. That will be the one piece version of a sharinganlike power and we do not have room for that in this manga. If there is indeed an eyeball beneath that scar then, if anything it is going to be like what past peoples have said, this trained eye it will just give him better vision and thus better balance as well as letting him see in the dark if he need to quickly adjust. That extra control of balance and the flow of his movements then he can also heighten his coo.

Yeah, gotta go with this. I just think he is blind in that eye from training. Whether it was to benefit his training or just a sacrifice, I'm not sure, but I don't think it's anything supernatural.

My general theory is that, he either lost it after trying to fight Mihawk seriously to see where he stands in comparison to him, or, he was having trouble with CoO and took his own eye to force himself to be better at it. With the latter, I can see that being turned into a joke of Zoro taking things to an unnecessary extreme.

Are you guys even serious? Seriously guys, sometimes I just don't get what is all the discussion about. I said long ago Luffy would trash Doflamingo, cause the main antagonist of this saga was not doflamingo. Now Luffy just revealed gear forth and proved it. I mean that was pretty obvious, otherwise the story would not go any further at a good pace.

As for Zoro, what is there to imagine? Zoro is blind from one eye, just that. During is training , maybe Mihawk or someone hit him with a slash and damaged his eye. In real life, haven't you ever seen a guy with a similar wound, that keeps his eyelid closed all the time, because he is blind?

I think the only question there is to ask is: what kind of enemy took Zoro his left eye? (same question whitebeard asked shanks about his arm)

When someone loses an eye the other eye doesn't get better vision, on the contrary. It gets tired and some people actually start losing sight completely. If Zoro can use CoO then he doesn't really need to be able to see in the dark like a cat.

Maybe he just lost his eye during his training with Mihawk. Maybe there is really nothing it there.
Just like how everyone was saying things about Sanji's left eye only to find out there is nothing weird or different in there except his eyebrow.
