The scariest German dialiect EVER (and the most ugly one) is the one spoken in Thuringia and Saxony, that is: Eastern Germany :p
Actually I understand Swiss-German quite well, at least I don't need subtitles when watching the Swiss news on TV. They're often aired on German Television (3sat) and the parts in Swiss-German are subtitled.
OK, dialects spoken in Saxony... That's true, THEY ARE UGLY :D.

But I mean real Swiss people, living at the countryside.
DIE sind schlimm xD.
Nachrichtensprecher sind was anderes. Die dürfen nicht schlimm sprechen :D

Hehe, I know what you mean :D
"Das isch kccchhhain zustand nüt" :p But I have to admit that I somehow like the sound of Swiss-German :D

However, the Swiss get full props from me for being the oldest continuous democracy in the world :thumbs

Re: German Language

The most aweful german 'dialect' is Low Saxon ('Plattdeutsch') if you ask me. If you know the normal German aka Hochdeutsch than you'll likely understand dialects like Hessian, Saxon, Bavarian, Frankish, Westphalian, etc... Not everything, but mostly.
But 'Platt'? Worse than Swiss-German.

Yeah, I speak Swiss-German and I don't understand you at all.^^

More like this:

"Dasch esch kei Zustand!"

And we have also very different dialects in Switzerland. You should hear a "Zürcher".:p

Yeah, democracy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:eyeroll

@voldy18

"Plattdeutsch" is the worst dialect ever.

Hey!^^

I'm from northern germany and my grandmother often talks "platt", yeah, sometimes it's hard to understand the words but I think the dialect they speak in saxony is the worst xD

And up here nearly everyone who can talk "platt" speaks an exelent dialect free normal german. In Hannover(also in the northern of germany) they speak the best german ;)

But that's too much off topic xD
We need students to teach!^^

Re: [Study] German

"Hey du, wann gedenkst du mir mein Geld zurück zu zahlen?"

"Hey du, wann zahlst du mir mein Geld zurück?"

"Hey du, wann gibst du mir meine Kohle wieder?"

... sounds all a bit rude, though. Third one is with a little slang but common.
You can only use that with people you're familiar with, not with e.g. a customer.

Re: [Study] German

If you want it formal:

Können Sie mir sagen, wann Sie gedenken, mir mein Geld zurück zu erstatten?

Wann kann ich mit Ihrer Zahlung rechnen?

Ich würde gerne wissen, wann mir mein Geld zurückerstattet wird?

The second opinion is for a letter. The 1st and the 3rd are for speaking use.

Really, my English writing is horrible.

Re: German Thread

I post this here on request for a friend who's learning German. In case that the bandwidth is used up, just try again the next day. Please don't PM me to 'fix the links' until it's really broken for some reason.

Kauderwelsch: Deutsch (download)
This is part of a very popular book series called Kauderwelsch which is usually written in German aside from this one. The books introduce the chosen language in a highly compressed, informative and amusing way (including flirting and swearing), explaining basic grammar and pronunciation, important and casual phrases, common slang, traveler's vocabulary and lot's of interesting trivia about the country's people and culture.

They're meant for globetrotters who want a quick but not dirty start into the language of their target country, being able to communicate fast with the native people instead of hammering through long grammar lessons. It gives you a basic understanding of grammar, just enough to built simple sentences yourself and basically all important vocabulary you'll need for the first weeks. The focus of the books is 'understand and be understood', not more or less.

It's also a great piece for emergency situations because it contains some very useful 'important words and phrases' lists. The archive file contains the ebook (pdf, 13,8mb) and the audio tracks (mp3, 17mb). You don't need the book if you just want to train your hearing ability and you don't need the audio if you just want to read.

Erzähl mir was: Langzahn, das Walroß (download)
This was a series of collector's magazines for children published in Germany from 1985 till 1987. An issue was published bi-weekly, ending with a total of 52 mags and a christmas special mag. I started elementary school in 1986 and basically learned how to read fluently with these stories.

Every issue contained around 6-9 short stories (fairytales, folk tales, famous novels, original stories,...). Most were oneshots and some were longer stories split into several parts which appeared regularly or irregularly in the magazine. The books don't contain any adds or flashy stuff, just the stories with really pretty art.

Now, how does that help me in learning German? Well, every issue came with a audio tape ;)

The tape contained all the stories from the book, read 1:1 by German voice actors. So you basically can read the story and listen to a native speaker at the same time who's reading the text exactly by the book (but with lots of emotions, sound effects and fun). Of course, you can download a normal German 'adults' audio book and have the same effect but I find it more helpful with lots of different short stories spoken by different people, with different art and sounds. It's just more memorable and not getting tiresome in the long run. There's even a little bell ringing when you have to turn the pages ^.^

You can download the full collection (all 53 issues as pdf including the audio tracks) on torrent. Because this download is over 5 GB, I separated one of the stories (40 MB) for you as example in the download link I posted above this text. It's the one my kids like the most :p

Re: German Thread

Wow Enini, the kiddie books look cool! I've downloaded the ones you've uploaded, and although my current vocabulary only allowed me to understand that there's something related to vikings, Norway, a rainbow and a walrus going on (xD), I think they'll be really helpful in the future when I get to know moar words :x Also good to study pronunciation. Thanks! Downloading the torrent now :p

The other one is good, but not awesome...translating directly without a context is weird, i'm sure i'll forget everything in 5min. But it's good as a fast guide, danke :333

Re: German Thread

Haha, you're welcome :D

Yes, the Kauderwelsch is really just a quick reference. It's not meant to be a study book but I often find the info there easier to understand than the long explanations in bigger books. I love such summary books myself because they contain everything needed on a few pages and fit in my pocket ^^

Btw, I found some nice German children and youth books... hmmm... will up them here once my router cable is fixed :D

Re: German Thread

If you stuck with some words I have a good translation website for you.
http://www.leo.org
You can also listen to the pronunciation of the german words you searched for.
Even thought it sounds a bit "bot" like.

Re: German Thread

I'm downloading some songs in german so I can listen to them on my car and get used to the sounds. I can't make anything from most of them, though >.>

Buuut this one sounded clear and I could make many words out of it! ^-^ Can't translate yet, though.

When I get home, I'll try to understand some of it and write it down...expanding my vocabulary is being the worst part >.<

Clueso - Gewinner

An allem was man sagt, an allem was man sagt ist auch was dran.
Egal wer kommt, egal wer geht. Egal, es kommt nicht darauf an.
Ich glaube nichts, ich glaub an dich. Glaubst du an mich?

Suchst du mich, dann such ich dich.

Ooooohhhhh!!
Ich bin dabei! Bist du dabei? Sind wir dabei?

I'll bug you guys with it in some hours :3
(lemme try translating 1st, do not do it for me please! xD)

(i loooooooooved this song <3)

That's indeed a nice song ^^

And yeah, very basic words and frequently repeated in different word plays. Should be nice lyrics for a beginner *waits for the trans* :D
