Medaka is safe. Volume 2 sales were to high to cancel it, no matter where on the TOC it is.

isn't Ane Doki more safe than Medaka? (since Ane vol 1 sells better than MB vol 2)

also, seems like MB vol 1 will/have reached 100K in terms of total sale.
sold 98,639 after 2 months. (based on 2009/11/30~2009/12/06 week)

Could be a long wait for something to surpass those two. None of the current series are even close, anything close is in another magazine. Naruto won't be surpassed, it will end first. One Piece would need to decline, possible depending on how much longer it is serialized.
I am curious what kind of series in other magazine that might surpass One Piece? I am thinking about Full Metal Alchemist... In my opinion it is one of the best Shounen out there. Detective Conan has a different genre from OP, but i have a feeling it'll be a classic :p

Beelzebub might be a hit...

oh btw is it true that Eiichiro Oda is Hiro Mashima's brother? That's an unconfirmed rumour i heard...

FMA is definitely big. its pretty much the second biggest shounen series at the moment. (NANA is in between I think) but there is still a big gap between the two. OP is just too big :P
I don't think we will see something that will surpass OP while it is still going. maybe after OP ends, just like how Dragonball didn't have much competition during its run.

Detective Conan has been going on longer than OP :P it might actually be more popular than OP among little kids considering how I've seen a spin-off of DC in almost every kodomo magazine I've read when I was a kid. probably because they are all same publisher, but still.

oh btw is it true that Eiichiro Oda is Hiro Mashima's brother? That's an unconfirmed rumour i heard...
I don't think so...99.999% sure, but you never know :p

Oh nope. I am not thinking about it in terms of popularity, sales, or the amount of merchandises. I am thinking about the quality. To be honest, i prefer FMA, because the storyline is much more compact and "to the point", less repetitive and more plot twists. However, that is only my personal taste, people can disagree. :tem

Del Rey Books announced that Oda and Mashima are not related. I think everyone has mistaken that Oda and Mashima are related because their artwork are similar.

Can anyone guess at the average time it took for Jump's biggest hits to be recognized as hits? E.g. One Piece and Hunter x Hunter.

Well, One Piece took some time I think. It was always underrated, at least outside of Japan and Germany.

I think it was rather quick turn-around for OP, considering that it started in '97, was pretty much at or near the top of the magazine from early going and was pretty much being recognized as such (like being the main focus of the "crowd shot" covers on holidays) by early '98. HxH actually started getting said notice even faster (around end of '98/beginning of '99), but considering that Togashi had a huge following around then it was much faster to catch on than even Oda. (who, as you remember, was starting his very first manga with OP)

That remind me of Beelzebub, which was placed at 2nd position a while ago... is it very common that a relatively new manga got such a high position? If i am not mistaken, Bakuman was placed first sometime ago as well, isn't it? (correct me if i am wrong... i am not very sure)

I don't believe the position in ToC reflect the quality of the manga, so i don't really bother. It only worries me when some mangas was in a danger of being cancelled. D=
I guess there's a prestige attached to the ranking as well... :(

Rank never = quality. A series that may seem like a piece of crap to some may end up a huge hit. Likewise, a series that just is so out there and incredible...the Japanese may not get and it could collapse and die. Many times it does mesh but not necessarily.

If Hunter x Hunter keeps going without breaks do you think it can topple One Piece in the TOC on average?

It's possible HxH might steal a couple from One Piece but overall One Piece will still reign supreme

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2010] - Discussion and TOC Talk

HXH doesn't have an anime right now, so I don't see it surpassing anything. Usually HXH does worse in the TOC because it doesn't have the young readers who... weren't born or couldn't read before the long hiatuses start... and just sells really well in older demographics I think with the tankoubons. But still they don't sell as well as Naruto or Bleach, they get close though.

So unless HXH suddenly started going at a regular rate for a long time with no more than one-week hiatuses and they make a TV anime and a bunch of movies I don't... see it happening.

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2010] - Discussion and TOC Talk

As far as a Detective series goes, I'd actually love it if the OhbaXObata combo actually serialized Detective Trap from Bakuman after they finish with their current one. The premise reminds me a bit of Gosho Aoyama's Kaitou Kid series with better art.

But since that most likely won't happen in the future, I'd be fine if someone who can be weird/hilarious like Matsui did a detective series. Just as long as it isn't as monotonous as Detective Conan.

The current Jump line up is okay. There are some interesting series. Other than One Piece there isn't any super amazing all time classic series. Hunter x Hunter comes close but all the hiatus are to annoying. There are better anthologies out there.
Agreed on how close HxH could have been and the hiatuses. To the point I've really lost most of the enthusiasm I had for the series. I was actually reading the English releases by Viz first so I had no idea about Togashi being such a lazy ass in regards to it. I probably wouldn't have read it until it finished had I known before hand.

@Bolded

I agree there are more interesting ones around but this was me being curious how others felt if they were willing to share. That and the other anthologies don't generate as much discussion(sadly) and we can't discuss them in this one lol.

Have a source I can look at for this? Not that I doubt you but I plan to have a field day with this one. Especially against the MB Hate Brigade.

-edit-

Never mind, I found the source. Oh I am loving every bit of this.

lol Bleach

If only I had a dollar every time the internet/western readers loved something and the Japanese fanbase was the exact opposite and let it die.

If Hunter x Hunter keeps going without breaks do you think it can topple One Piece in the TOC on average?
Never. Togashi could have if he was consistent from start to finish but being the lazy bum he is, he killed his own momentum and pretty much put limits on a story that really felt limitless to me. Seeing how Yu Yu Hakusho sputtered out in the end too, it really seems like he should just stick to doing shorter stories. Not that he will be working consistenly ever again anyway.

After hearing about all the crap Yabuki put up with yet still managed to put out a chapter every week, I don't really care to hear whatever excuses people may try and make for Togashi. If anything, he definitely hasn't had as many health problems as Hoshino in all of these years.

Not on average, but it's beaten it before. If it started being consistently released and got a second anime that would definitely help.

54,618 , 54,618 Ane Doki vol.1=Week 1
38,396 , 93,014 Ane Doki vol.1=Week 2

From Oricon a couple of weeks ago. I think its highly likely it broke 100K already. Covering 7K volumes in a few weeks isn't exactly a hard task in this case imo.
