But don't swim in still water in Africa. Someone I met travelling here has a relative who did that- she came down with intestinal worms. She also got a festering sore on her leg which contained some more worms.

So, yeah. Stay outta teh still water.

I think indeed it'd be a helpful experience and if you really got the guts then go. You will grow in your mind set and I think you will come back as a different person. One or two months will be enough though. You will see enough in that time. After a longer time the adaptation back into society might more difficult. Take care. x

1-2 months is very short. Especially in such a different environment it won't be nearly enough to really grasp it.
I'ld tend saying four months might be good, but if you got the balls to do so six might be great

Hmmm, Africa is too hot for me to stay for 6 months. Ummm, what's part of Africa exactly? Though, do they supply you with the necessary funding (airplane ticket, housing, food, etc) when you volunteer? If so that would be cool, i would totally volunteer. What organization are you volunteer under?

I'm actually with Rofl here. I spoke with a mate who studied in Ghana for six months and he lived at the campus there and basically lived with not much worse conditions than he did in Sweden. It took him a month or so to get used to the food etc. so if I would go to a nursery home or day care centre, living in a less developed part of Africa, and really understand - not just see and live through, I guess it'd take more than a month.

Four months might be fine yeah but I feel like six month is a better time. It's not too long (like eight / nine) but long enough to grasp the harsh reality some people has to live with every day, long enough to change as a person, but not long enough to forget "home".

It will, but I'll most likely quit anyways and switch program. Southern part. West is just meh, central is quite impossible, eastern scares the living shit out of me, northern is not really the most stable place.

So either Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia or RSA. Maybe Tanzania. I have to buy the travel tickets myself but they supply with housing, food etc at a volunteer centre / aid station. I'll most likely volunteer under Unicef (through my local region) or The SIP Network. The former which I'm a fairly new member in but I just figured I might as well join and become an active member there.

i think u shouldn't ask to people here what u must decide, u're going there, not them.Also There is alot of parameters
-have u already been there ( to the place where u going) ? Do u know if u'll like it or not
-Once u decide and u go there, will u have the possibility to come back immediately if you dont like
-are u married? what ur family think about it?
-why asking if you must stay there longer than 6months? shouldn't u go first for fews weeks and decide if u should stay longer once u're there?

Well it's always interesting to hear what people think, if they'd do it, maybe they've thought of something I haven't, maybe they've volunteer'd themselves etc. so there are many reasons why I should ask for their opinion

1) I've already been in RSA on a project before for a couple of weeks, worked with a daycare centre and visited the "slums" outside of Potchefstroom

2) I will most likely not be able to go back

3) No, I have a girlfriend since some weeks back, and my family tells me to go for it if I want to.

4) I can't go there for some weeks and then decide, but I just added the "longer" alternative if people think that nine months or a year or something is a better time.

Do you have a choice? If I were you, I will definitely go to SA. My father has been there for two months. Kids are so much fun, unlike some others, I don't see them as a waling headache. Are you good with kids?
