Little Info about issue #29:

Cover: Gintama
Lead CP: Toriko

CP: Reborn! - enigma - Nurarihyon no mago (31 Pages!!)*
Special: Kusou Saiki (at least that's what the Jump page says)

*Sasaki wrote last week that Nura is getting 31 pages...the same is written on the japanese Jump page, but on the english one it's 31 Pages for enigma, I think that's wrong, so 31 pages for Nura.

I read the raw for Mago this week, Mago is definitely the one getting 31 pages and a color page (as per the Japanese site).

Full name for the one-shot is Chounouryokusha Saiki Kusuo no Psi-nan (The Disaster of Supernatural Saiki Kusuo; with psi-nan as a pun for sainan=disaster, but the English site calls it "The Disaster of PSI Kusuo Saiki". Same difference I guess.). It's by the mangaka of Boku no Watashi no Yuushagaku, Asou Shuuichi.

After three chapters I am reasonably impressed by Ikkyuu. It is the first new series I can remember in ages that is not a wall of tournament manga cliches and action tropes. I'm not quite attached enough to rage over low rankings, but it could come to that. Does anyone else like Ikkyuu so far?

Omg. I have nightmares about that manga. Long time since I read some chapters of it, but after what I recall, it's the worst thing I've ever read x)

Nice that Toriko is getting the lead CP :)

I was thinking of letting a few chapters pile up and see how the rankings go first... i don't want to get attached and see yet another series get cancelled :crying

I'm a bit afraid Ikkyuu might overlap Mago's fanbase since they are both about yokai right? :?bunny

I was a bit puzzled when the main plot transformed into a search for crystal balls to grant a wish... But yeah I will look forward to it.

Otherwise based on the japanese JUMP TOC link from the discussion a few weeks ago, I have generated a excel table with the TOC from 1999 to 2010.
Maybe it can help making statistics in order to validate the current theories.
What first impressed me is the inflation of the color pages : 45 in 2000, 85 last year (not including the main covers)
Also it seems that One Piece place was already well established even back in 1999

yeah it is kinda normal... and that's probably because kishi can't keep up with more than 19 pages...

I've seen manga get extra pages before. The only time I recall one of the big 3 getting is One Piece after the time skip. Naruto might have, in the past, but not recently. Mago has had extra pages before, during the Kyoto arc.

It's more for the new series or the ones which need a bit of help in order to improve their ranks and are not hopeless. Naruto don't really need them.

*17 pages ^^"

Series getting more pages is a regular occurrence, but funnily enough it hardly ever happens to the Big 3. I see it as more of an 'encouragement' than a 'reward', unlike colour pages. It rarely happens to series that are already well-established.

Thank you very much k-dom, that's something I'd been wanting to do for quite some time ~

thanks to you i read the third one. i really like it, because it's not a typical battle manga and more about riddles and intelligence.

Sometimes manga-ka also need more pages in order to finish a chapter the way they want to end it,rather than just delaying the tension 'till the next chapter.
I always wondered why Kishi only had 17 pages.I mean,he always managed to draw those 19 pages before and recently he's having trouble finishing just 17 pages.Maybe health issues again?

As for Ikkyu,
the search for the crytal balls kinda put me off.Reminded me of Baka to Boing, which had quite an original premise, but ended up as a search for souls and full of fanservice.I don't think Ikkyu will turn into something as dissapointing as this, but i hope there is something more behind it.

It's not exactly a new thing; I started Editing Naruto early 2008 and his page-count/chapter was already 17 in those days. I'm too lazy to go and figure out when exactly he went from 19 to 17, but it seems he's been enjoying this 'privilege' (or not, idk) for a long time. Maybe he's just more comfortable with that format.

As for your first point I'm not exactly sure, I'd have thought the editors were quite strict when it comes to fitting the story in the number of pages asked. Especially since the logistics (printing and all that) are most likely decided before, and changing them last-minute would screw a lot of things up. So I doubt it's a choice coming from the mangaka.

Yeah,i know it's been for long,it started somewhere after the Kakuzu/Hidan arc.He cut the pagenumber down to 17 for some reason and now he's having trouble managing even that. It's just that it geels rather odd.

You are partially right.I remember reading somewhere, maybe even in Bakuman, that you have to somehow manage this and that it's one of the challenges of being a weekly manga-ka.But i also remember that once,Kishimoto extended the amount of chapters in volume 43 from 11 to 13,because he felt that it had a better conclusion this way.It ended up costing more and he even apologized, but it was still possible. So i guess,if you are as influential as Kishimoto,Oda or Togashi, you will be allowed to do stuff like that.I don't know for sure either...

At least Nura is the bigger of the characters from the other series with a color page on this issue, it's something.
