Don't really get why Naruto is in first place, as the whole war-arc has been pretty mediocre.

Just because the arc is crappy in general doesn't mean it doesn't have good or extremely good chapters in specific. And if its not that, it still has popular characters which can boost overall fangasm. Gaara is the reason for that <as well as the fact that current arc of OP isn't as superb as the last one xd>

Good job staying away from the bottom 5 Medaka Box. Just keep hovering around that position going into next year and I will be very happy.

Wow, Sket Dance rocketed all the way up to #3? Great event to see unfold. The anime is really doing some heavy lifting for it. One Piece slid down a spot and Toriko is still maintaining 5th place. Lets see if it can rise a bit higher again.

I'm surprised Harusigawa had such a strong debut. If it can sustain that kind of impact remains to be seen. Good start nonetheless. Another Bleach color. Looks like the rankings actually reflecting how terrible the series has been for years is over.

Mago and Kuroko are low again. Both have been in a slump for a while now. Makes me wonder if they are ever going to manage to improve their positions. Though not like it matters too much with Magico basically being dead now.

Here is the breakdown for 2011:
  • 9: 2.6%
  • 10-12: 12.2%
  • 13-15: 21.3%
  • 16-18: 16.3%
  • 19-24: 23.1%
  • 25-29: 11.3%
  • 30: 13.2%

Here is 2010:
  • 9: 5.1%
  • 10-12: 25.9%
  • 13-15: 37.1%
  • 16-18: 21.4%
  • 19-24: 7%
  • 25: 3.5%

That is a stunning, fundamental shift in audience composition. In 2010 the vast majority of readers were 18 or younger. Now 19-30 accounts for just under 50% of readers. When 16-18 year old readers (a demographic that lost readers) is added that means over 60% of readers are 16 years old or older. That is not even the same audience as last year, when 67% of Jump readers were 15 or younger and almost 89% were 18 or younger. Last years media guide is available here.
I am really surprised, and this is indeed a really amazing thing to have happened! Even with so many hardships this year, the fact that circulation is close to 3 million is amazing. More than half the magazine consists of moderately big hits, if you think about it.

But those demographics blew me out of the water. Thats a huge difference. And while you can say a lot of older readers have grown up reading some of the manga published in Jump, it simply can't account for the shift to older readers from 2010 to 2011. I wish I could understand the graphs shown on the Media Guide, because I wonder if there was a similarly drastic change in Jump's female audience.

Another thing that I'm curious about is if there's a relation between the kind of manga serialized in Jump and its audience. I remember someone mentioning how Jump used to have a lot of darker titles, and now its gained a much lighter tone and mood. And looking at this demographic study, I wonder how Jump's seinen titles were affected.

Thank you for linking to that study, Kaiten, I am going to find someone to translate it for me, hopefully. >_<

Edit:
I figured out the percentage of male to female readers.

Male Readers : 80%
Female Readers: 20%

Meh, I thought it would be higher. Oh well. :P

i thinks that quite high, i mean it's shounen! besides katekayo and maybe magico, there isn'T anything in favor for girls. (not like they can't like op/naruto, but i think you get what i mean.)

Guess it's the character boost then, because I don't really think there's been any chapters that's been very good either. When I compare part 2 with part 1, I almost cry over what Naruto could have been!

And I do agree with you on One Piece not being in it's best shape, but it's still pretty good.

Don't misunderstood me - I'm not saying its bad or sth, of course its pretty good as you say. All I'm implying is that when OP has some worse chapters/arc than usual, and the other series has better chapter <because of sth, don't go into specifics whether its because of this or that> than that other series - in this case Naruto - can be on nr 1 spot because it benefits from OP chapter being 'only' good, not awesome. Still, going by weekly basis OP usually has nr 1 spot so its not like its big deal, yeah? :p

From Naruto fan perspective: you're too harsh on Naruto part 2 imo, but I'm open for discussion if you post in a specific thread about your point of view, like here maybe:

Hey guys I have a question...
Are the results in each weeks TOC from 8 chapters ago?
If that is true, you said Harigusawa's result is from chapter 2 right? So why it has been in the TOC for some weeks now?
And another thing, you said Beelzebub 116 is not ranked in Issue #41 because of it's color page, but it didn't have a color page in chapter 116! The color page was in chapter 124, which is the latest chapter released.
Can someone clear this up for me please?
Thanks ^^

Here we go again...

ToC - Table of Conents
It exists primarily to tell the reader on what page he can find the Manga, not to tell them what is the rank of the series in WSJ. Thats secondary objective. Also, ToC is just based on ranking results.

If a chapter in current issue has a Color Page, it gets a special position in ToC, a position that this time is not based on ranking.

The JUMP demographic for 2011 is similar to SQ's, which is characterized has an older demographic. I always went off about how the rankings were polled by 12 year olds, and now I can't say that anymore. :p

I'm really happy that Sket Dance is hanging out with Naruto and ONE PIECE. At this point, I'm afraid Magico is approaching a dead end. The mangaka is trying to keep the reader's attention with fanservice, but I don't it will fare well. I wonder if the readers for HxH moved on?

If a chapter in current issue has a Color Page, it gets a special position in ToC, a position that this time is not based on ranking.
To be more specific, color pages are placed where publishers charge the most for advertising space: the front, right after the table of contents, and the middle of the magazine. If there are more than two color pages, the third gets placed in the back half of the magazine but closer to the middle than the back (usually).

I think it is the One Piece effect. I can't find it anymore but I do remember news that the majority of One Piece's audience were adults. It was posted here and at ANN, but I can't find it. If so, OP is probably drawing new fans to Jump, anyone who can't wait three months for new books. That might explain the sudden rise of an older leaning Jump.

Now that I think about it, there is suddenly fanservice in Jump again. Harisugawa, Medaka, and even Kurogane had a few panty shots.

I think Asgaroth is correct, 20% is high for a shounen magazine. SQ is higher but also has more bishies.

I'm still sure that most of the voters are around that age, because you still need to send in the quesionnaires. I think most of the elder readers wouldn't care unless their beloved series is in a slump, ff what Kaiten said is true than there is even less reason for them to vote (One Piece will never get canceled so why vote).

Why you looking @ it like that? Medaka finished 7th and was 2 spots away from the Top 5. It's doing well.

Sket Dance deserve more than that . Nura' is still selling well I realy don't know why it's almost always in the bottom 5 while toriko is always in the top 5 but sells just little more than nura' . magico does better than Enigma at its second volume but it's the last of ranking , All that is weird

@Zeromcd : you forgot Beelzebub Maou Gaiden (19,012 / 44,113)

I could be wrong but I believe Shueishia acquires reader information from the same post cards used to vote. I believe they include the option of including age, gender, location, etc. There is a good chance that older readers are voting and depending on point of view the TOC could reflect that. Along with the mega hits series that (probably) appeal to older readers are in the front half if the magazine: Toriko (a throw back to the late 90's), Sket Dance, Harisugawa, and St&rs. Bakuman has color this week but is in the front half more often than not.

I don't think Shonen Jump is lacking in the bishie department either, but I think I understand what you mean. :p

I guess since I haven't been following Jump that much, I assumed that percentage has been like that for quite some time. I'm surprised 20% is a high number, but if it is that's really incredible. (Now I'm curious...how many female mangaka are currently serialized in Jump? I can count two off the top of my head: Enigma and Reborn.)

I think the One Piece effect is probable. I mean, if you're buying the magazine, you might as well read the whole thing and fill out the questionaire as well. I also think its because Jump has a lot more long-running series. Some of the adults who read One Piece when they were kids are not only still reading it, they are recommending it to their work friends. Same for other long-running series like Naruto and Bleach and even Gintama to a certain extent. Kochikame seems to be an exception this, though.

EDIT: I agree with Kaiten, a manga like Bakuman would have been REALLY out of place in Jump 10 years ago. And a nostalgic factor is alway good to have.

That would make sense but then wouldn't it be easy to lie regarding the age?
Still it's too early to name ST&RS and Harisugawa up there, they're relatively new and could go either way. The influence of elder readers might have grown but the young audiences should still play an important role. I mean Reborn and Beelzebub are often up there too and a series like Mago, who seems to be more fitting for elder readers, is always in the bottom.

There are only those two, JUMP is dominated by manly mangakas. Now I just imagined Enigma being canceled and Amano is the only woman left. Must be kinda awkward when they all meet :s

I technically count Bleach in with the other series that appeal to female readers since it has its share of characters that have rabid female fan bases. Byakuya and Hitsugaya come to mind.

Why you looking @ it like that? Medaka finished 7th and was 2 spots away from the Top 5. It's doing well.
Still too conditioned from most of its rankings before the Medaka vs. Kumagawa fight. They have finally hit their stride since then which I'm glad to see. It is most likely as safe as it has ever been in comparison to before due to its latest rankings and increasing sales but I'm just being cautiously optimistic. Don't take me too seriously when I say stuff like that. I believe I said Medaka will probably live around 4 years back during the Flask Plan arc and I'm still sticking to that estimation.

Glad to see Sket Dance doing pretty well sales-wise. It will hopefully be in the 200K range as the later volumes hit and at least stabilize itself there.

Not only them but I catch your drift, haha. In PL I would say that from the 'big three' Bleach is among the biggest fanbase of female readers compared to other 2 titles who has them much less xd

Just Sasuke's fanbase alone makes up for 5 bleach characters XD but I agree Bleach should be among the biggest fanbase, yet nearly every series in Jump has one or two "bishies". I wonder if a mangaka (Shounen) really thinks about getting the female readers attention when he creates one? Should be the case, sometimes at least
