@Asgaroth:
Some mangas end even if the main character's goal isn't fullfilled.
As for Naruto:

Its because all plot is resolving and this seems like it will be the last or one of the last arcs.
Let me put it this way, if Madara is beaten and Sasuke becomes a good guy again (Or he is killed) then what? There isn't anything more to resolve!
SURE Kishimoto could extent the manga but I don't think he will. I don't know what could Kishimoto made up, he has already shown us tons of super-powerful characters being resurrected, I can't see something topping that.
Dragon Ball was longer but Goku never really had a clear goal.
Death Note was extended and the second part is generally not as loved as the first part.

Viz to Launch Weekly Shonen Jump Alpha Digital Anthology
posted on 2011-10-14 09:32 EDT
Bakuman., Bleach, Naruto, Nura, One Piece, Toriko chapters posted 2 weeks after Japan

The North American manga publisher Viz Media announced at New York Comic Con on Friday that it will launch a new weekly digital manga anthology called Weekly Shonen Jump Alpha on January 30, 2012. Each issue of the anthology will have installments of Bakuman., Bleach, Naruto, Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan, One Piece, and Toriko — two weeks after their print debut in Japan's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine.

Weekly Shonen Jump Alpha will be available on VizManga.com and Viz Manga apps for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad devices. An annual membership will cost US$25.99 for 48 weekly issues. (Weekly Shonen Jump takes a few weeks off during the year in Japan.) Single issues will cost US$0.99 for a four-week rental. Any issue on one device can be read on another device with the same user account via VizManga.com or the Viz Manga app.

Viz will also offer Shonen Jump Digital Warp — an accelerated digital release of select manga titles to bridge the gap between the latest English graphic novels in print and the latest Japanese installments in print. For example, Shonen Jump Digital Warp is starting from Naruto volume 53 now. (Viz published the print version of Naruto volume 52 last month.)

After Weekly Shonen Jump Alpha launches, Viz Media plans to stop publishing the print edition of its Shonen Jump magazine next March with the "farewell April 2012 issue." Viz has been publishing the monthly magazine since 2003.

Well, sounds good, and bad. I bet they'll go after Edited Manga groups harder.
But it's good to hear that jump thinks of their international readers. Although, it's USA/CA only?

I;d raise an eyebrow about it being two weeks afterwards, but knowing how Shueisha is, that was probably the best offer Viz could get from them. I;ll probably be checking this out, though I'm hoping they'll add more series if this does well.

seems like us/ca only, which would be bad for me. also that Edited Manga groups will "maybe" pick other series to translate, so that they would stop me from reading any of the mentioned mangas at all. hopefully both of this will not happen, could be bad for my otaku heart =). otherwise if the translation in a good quality and the app is not bugy and so on, would this be a great thing. 25$ a year for all chapters of these mangas sounds great. biggest problem would be for me that i don't have a ipad and the iphone is not big enough to enjoy reading manga on it.

Posted this in another thread, but these are my thoughts.

No Gintama, no interest. >_> Besides I don't really read any of the titles they mentioned outside of One piece.

What I'm more interested in is how this could possibly affect translations and scantlations in the future.....cause regardless of how stubborn some people might be, I doubt scantlators are going to waste time on something that'll be done in two weeks anyway.

(Now scantlation rips in the vein of Horriblesub's CR rips are a completely different matter.)

I wonder if this means that scantlators and translators will finally have to start picking up niche series, and not just the next series Jump vomits out?

Crap, didn't mean to discuss this here...uh...new thread?

I noticed a few people saying above that the second half of Death Note was "extended," which I take to mean that the editors forced the mangaka to continue the manga even though they wanted to end it. Is this speculation, or has it actually been confirmed by Obata or Ohba?

Nah. It's going to be like crunchyroll. No one wants to wait two weeks to pay for something they can get for free at Mangastream. Not every new Jump series is translated anymore, some like Light Wing take forever to get translated into English, if they ever do. I bet Alpha helps those series.

I guess it makes sense for them to stick with established hits before trying other manga....personally I'm still really sour with Viz over you-know-what. (Considering that I actually bought every one of their English releases, I think I'm entitled to be pissed off.) Though I could be won over with licenses of stuff like Beelze or something.

But yeah, I figure all this will do is give the people who buy stuff just one more reason to bitch at those who read Mangastream or get their stuff for free. Manga class wars here we come.

I've soured on the manga industry in general. They blame all of their problems on Manga Editors than proceed to make dumb business decisions. Whether Shueisha or VIZ's decision, delaying chapters of some of the most popular manga internationally for two weeks is idiotic. Everyone knows that people would be willing to pay to read Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Bakuman, Hunter x Hunter et al the second they come out in Japan. Would anyone be willing to pay to wait two weeks after Manga Editors are able to get chapters out? I doubt it.

When asked why there was going to be a two-week delay in between the appearance of Shonen Jump in Japan and the digital Shonen Jump Alpha in North America, Viz Media's Senior VP and General Manager Alvin Lu said: "We wanted to give ourselves some room for improvement. If we can get this right, we will close the two-week gap in the future."

So it seems that they will slowly close the gap between Japanese and English releases. If they can start doing this with even more series besides the 6 chosen, they may have something big. I'm still not big on paying for digital manga, but if they can get One Piece and a few of my other favorites within a week of the Japanese release, I will definitely consider it.

That's as bad a excuse as it gets.
I'm not an Manga Editor, manga editor or what have you, so I don't really know.. But how come the folks at mangastream can get the manga pretty much in less than 24 hours? While VIZ which very likely will receive a clean, pre-scanned version of the mangas will take a lot more?
Sure they have to change the kanas for english letters but still..

And I still don't understand why Viz doesn't like do a in demand print, I don't believe cancelled mangas like Gintama or REBORN! wouldn't cover translation costs, maybe that's more Shueisha's fault, I have heard contracts with Shueisha (Or any other manga company really) involve a package of series and for every certain number of volumes you have to pay in advance, and then you pay rolaties for each sold book or something like that..

I wouldn't mind the gap, as even if I did read it online, I would still buy it for a small price of $0.99. However, I'm sure Australia will be left out of the equation and even if it wasn't, I'm sure it'd be longer than 2 weeks. Though good luck to them. ;)

That's not a bad excuse at all. It's actually fairly reasonable. They don't want to promise simultaneous releases and then have multiple delays, so they took the safest option. And they already said that they're planning on closing the gap, so there's nothing to really complain about.

Viz is also different from Manga Editors. They only work during office hours, which limits how much they can work on their series, and they have to deal with other series on top of the simultaneous releases.

So, in other words, Viz is going to try and close the gap when they can get themselves adapted to the current system, right?? Not bad. I can agree and understand. But until Viz catches up, I think we're going to be relying on Edited Mangas for a little while. When the time comes, Edited Mangas will altogether stop. (For the Big 3, that is)

A better idea is to do a joint venture with the Manga Editors, that way, Viz can get them out insanely fast. Lastly, they have to make it region-free. Otherwise, that's not gonna shutdown Edited Mangas.

never gonna happen in my lifetime, that a corporation would do such a thing or something similiar. it's like begging hacker to join a software company to help improve... oh wait, that did happen, but were talking about viz...

QFT.

Though I hope this spreads to other mags besides Jump. I'm so sick and tired of not being able to read Shounen Sunday series because half of the mag doesn't get raw scans. Hell, I hope they do other series besides the big 2. I'd consider reading One piece from them, but again I'm still really pissed about the Gintama thing. Now there's no way to access the series outside of CR, and while I don't mind doing the translations, It sickens me to think that series not half as good as it is get dubs and timely manga releases. I bought all 23 volumes of the English version of Gintama, and I would totally buy a chapter a week (despite translating it.) The companies need to realize that it's quality NOT quantity that get people to buy. If a guy who translates a series each week is still willing to buy it, that should say something about the series's quality.

I don't really have the right to complain since I won't be able to buy from them (I am from Mexico, likely this will be for US and Canda only) but if they don't do simultaneous releases is just.. Dumb IMO...
Isn't Rinne released simultaneously?? If it is then VIZ doesn't have any excuses (Apart from Shueisha simply don't letting Viz do a simultaneous release, which IMO is unlikely since Shueisha must know Edited Mangas have the chapters earlier than the official release date anyway)

Totally agree!

Manga Editors have to either wait for RAWs scan the manga themselves, and clean the RAWs.

Viz in the other hand would, not only receive the mangas way ahead of time, but also clean. Also I think is likely Viz would receive a sort of scan of the Name so they begin translating ahead of the time they are given the actual finished chapter (This is just my expeculation though).

I know I am being very picky but I know they can do better.

Uh, the name isn't a finished chapter. It changes from that point. But the mangaka send their finished chapters in to Shuueisha 2 weeks before the street date (Mon). And they're out in the earliest stores on the Wednesday before, which would be a week and a half.

But the other thing is, the Japanese version would obviously have to come out before an English version. So as long as a Edited Manga came out before the street date they'd be earlier. Manga would never end up like simulcasts. Still though, you're right in saying they could definitely do them earlier than that. If I got paid to translate manga all day, I could do like 15 (non-Gintama) chapters in a day.

And if they're basing them on scans of the manuscripts, not scans of the versions in the magazine with the low-quality ink and paper, it wouldn't require much to any photoshop cleaning.

I think there aren't going to be any OVAs on this year's Jump Festa.
