Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

How do we have to interpret the data for "copies sold per Volume"?
For example:

"Naruto broke 1,000,000 copies sold per Volume at Volume 6"

It means that the total sell for the first six volumes were 6.000.000 (6mln / 6 volumes = 1mln for volume), or that the volume 6 sold 1.000.000 copies in the time that volume 7 went out?
It's not necessarily information that can be broken down further. Shueisha would have this information but not necessarily make it public. Publicly available sales data, including the Oricon charts, are not intended for advanced business analytics, they are not comprehensive enough to draw very detailed conclusions from. They give a very nice idea of what is and is not popular in Japan, if the right perspective is taken. Even then it is best to proceed with caution: comparing one mangas sales to another might not give a very clear idea of popularity. Often times I see members negatively comparing popular series to best sellers without realizing their argument is essentially akin to saying musicians need to sell as many records as Lady Gaga or Bieber to be considered popular.

Interesting 2ch likes Inumaru so much. I should get back into reading it, it always seemed like it was aiming toward younger age groups, but 2ch generally likes more depth and interesting plots.

Any of these guys previously-published authors?

Generally only the top 1 or 2 ranking in NEXT get a chance at being serialized. None of those really stand out to me.
Tsugumo looks okay I guess.

I don't know what's with the art trend these days, but none of the NEXT series stands out visually. The synopsis doesn't capture my attention either. :/

I'm really glad that Beelzebub has made a come back. It seems that I was the only person who was interested in the training arc.

It's still really sad to see Nurarihyon and ST&RS consecutively at the bottom.

Agree, none look really that interesting, but if I had to pick il'd go with Megaton Cherry. The others look pretty awful.

I'm still hoping Koushien no Mamono or anything by its author gets serialized. That was awesome and has the best art I've ever seen.

The guy with a scary face in the middle of the bottom looks cool. I think it was previously "published" as a Treasure entry with the title "獣剣Lovers". http://www.shonenjump.com/j/manga-shou/treasureread.html The art isn't that good, but the concept looks interesting.

I thought that is the typical shounen-y art? Besides, assuming they are all newbies n jump next is weekly, it is understandable. Drawing complicated art for weekly serialization is suicide unless u have lots of assistants. Besides, even for someone like masakazu katsura or urasawa, their early art is far from impressive (someone should read wingman n yawara n compare it to the current art) xD

Over the last year or two it really feels like Jump art is drawn off a template. Even the character design for good series like St&rs seems to homogenized. These Jump NEXT one shots seem like they are traced off the same template. There are a few recent series with a unique style (or at least semi-unique), Magico comes to mind, but not that many.

Maybe most don't dare to create something more unique, maybe some were assistents to some running series, taking a bit of style because they know it works. Look at the bright side, the unique ones will shine even more brightly so. :P

Sorry, but it hurts my eyes looking at the preview shots with half the heads being cut off.

I left it out on purpose, as nothing was cut off.

The character designs of Oumagadoki and Yotsuya Senpai are pretty unique, in my opinion. Not a recent series, but Muhyo & Roji art style is awesome too.

Zeromcd missed one more one shot. It's this one:

This one is manga-adaptation of light novel with same illustrator also doing artwork for manga (like Kure-nai). And it has released an another one shot on the recent Jump SQ.Lab.

Also, it looks like the writer, Hinata Shou, also wrote novel-adaptation for Rakko 11-go.

For recent one shots, my favorite artwork was Murahagane, by Yashiro Manabu. Its artwork resembles 80s style SF manga; darn, I still hoped this series to win GFC rather than Hungry Joker.

And let it be the second one on the left in de middle line (boy and two girls) which remind me of that style. Especially the white, grey haired girl. The complete left one of the middle line reminds me a bit of Shaman King's/Takei's style

It happens more frequently that new mangaka are inspired by their own generation manga

Or they just gradually gets the mangakas drawing style while they were working as an assistant. For example (but this example is not from a Jump), Yoshikawa Miki (the author of Yankee-kun to Megane-chan) adopts Mashima Hiro's (the author of Fairy Tail) artwork while she was working as an assistant.

I want GBS!! I like the rough look (kinda looks like the art by the guy who did Hoop Men) and it has the classic sports look.

Is it just me, or does the male lead in 'suzumori' (top row, 2nd from right) look incredibly like Luffy? I noticed it straight away, and can't unsee what I just saw :p

For some reason, Iron Curtain caught my eye. The rest..not much interest.

ITA, I thought the artwork and concept behind mura was great.
