I don't mean to bring this conversation back up, but I think it's amazing how Bleach used to sell 600,000 copies in its first week, and now it looks like it will take another month for Bleach 53 to even reach that mark. Reborn! also fell hard.

Harisugawa's sales are amazing for a new series.

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

A ten year old series that declined in sales over a year ago but has since stabilized is hardly an interesting topic. Bleach bashing is so 2008. Yawn. Moving on.

Good start for Kagami. A new series selling 44,125 copies it's first week is great by any standard. That compares well to Mago and is better than Medaka. Unfortunately 44,125 is also comparable to Double Arts, and we all know how that went. If Kagami can maintain it's current rankings until volume two comes out I think it will last a nice, long time. If it's rankings crash now then sales will not be enough to save it. Not yet anyway.

Hazards of dragging out arcs until fans are fatigued I guess. It'll be interesting to see if they stabilize at this level, or continue to fall over the next year.

True, though it's a new series by a returning author that has achieved some measure of success in the past. That gives it a bit of an advantage over series whose author has never had anything serialized before.

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

Since we had two double issues in a row, I forgot that things go back to normal this week.

I only look at Sket Dance's ranking now to determine if the TOC is good or not. :p This week is good.

I'm not digging the Arcobaleno arc since it's pretty much fighting for the sake of fighting. Battles aren't Reborn's strong point so its position makes sense.

Manga with color pages aren't included in the ranking, as they are deliberately placed there for the print and highlighting.
Then why One Piece is BEFORE Gintama? If it wasn't in the ranking it should be in the top, shouldn't it?

Series that have the cover BUT not a color page are usually around that spot.
Here are two examples:

http://weeklyjump.livejournal.com/183044.html#comments
The logic behind it is very easy. You cannot have a series that is on the cover somewhere out of the top 5. Therefore like the lead CP or CPs in general they are not seen as "ranked" by the majority of the people.

Not quite true. We have plenty of examples of series with the cover but they are out of "top 5". Making a quick search in the Livejournal's group, I've found these:
http://weeklyjump.livejournal.com/2008/11/05/
http://weeklyjump.livejournal.com/2008/11/12/
http://weeklyjump.livejournal.com/2008/10/22/
http://weeklyjump.livejournal.com/2009/03/04/
http://weeklyjump.livejournal.com/2009/01/21/

And I can recall some other examples by memory, but couldn't find, sorry.

So, this proves there's no pattern at all.
And not having a pattern it's a hint that the series with cover but no color page is ranked, as we can see that a series with the cover is usually around the place that its been placed in previous weeks (D.Gray-man in the fourth link is a loud example of it).

ST&RS sold less than 13.000 copies, now the axe is sure, imho with Magico and two new series will start probabily in issue 9 and 10..

And I hope the Mago's color page is for a third season! **

Exactly. So the most logical conclusion is - Gintama is 2nd in this week's ranking.

Anedoki was cancelled 1-2 weeks after the first volume was released due to low rankings in the questionnaire polls.

And the funny thing is that not a single volume from a series after Anedoki has sold better than it did, which just sums up how awful new series in Jump have been doing the last few years.... Harisugawa though may be the one to finally do it and even that isn't exactly a ratings darling atm.

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

Maybe Jump readers are just sick of all these new series that are being thrown at them so they're just skipping over them in the mag so thus not voting for them, and Jump itself seems to be pumping out the new series until it can find an instant hit, lol when will this madness end?! xD

Thought so. I haven't seen that report anywhere. Just that he beat his personal best. Which means it could very well go back on hiatus in another 9-10 weeks. Back to biting my nails~
