Somewhere in 2008 I believe. I don't remember clearly when, but I do know I started by watching the 1999 anime on tv when it was aired where I live. The tv only showed until before the OVA's, but after watching it I made a search to find the manga and got lucky. =]
Only latter I have finished watching the anime (had to download a subbed version of it), but the manga was what really impressed me to the point I'm still around after all the hiatuses. Though I have to say that I'm greatly enjoying the reboot of the anime so far as well. ^^
But to be honest, the first time I heard about this series was in an certain manga magazine I bought, waaaaayy back when I didn't even had access to internet and I only paid attention to said article of the magazine after hearing the name Togashi, for I have been an fan of YYH ever since I was a kid. =D
Damn, good times. I feel old whenever I got to remember of these kinds of things... <_<

Ah, my story of HxH. I want to go back to highschool (2000-2002ish) when I was soaking up anime for the first time. I wanted to get into as many series as possible back then! My first shonen series that I loved were Dragonball Z followed by Yu Yu Hakusho, to me there was no greater. I enjoyed other things like Cowboybebop, Trigun, but YuYuHakusho and Yoshihiro Togashi had entranced me. There came a point where I was watching the series as it was being dubbed on adult swim and I was collecting the uncut dvds that I realized "Yu Yu Hakusho is going to end someday, its only 112 episodes". I searched the internet for other series to get into that might be able to quench my thirst. That's when I found Hunter X Hunter! I originally saw the 1999 anime series via bootleg dvd's and I wasn't at all impressed at first. I adore the 1999 series but it doesn't leave a great first impression. Still I slogged through it because it was Togashi's work, and by Zevil Island I found myself in LOVE.

The subtitles i first watched sucked but by the time I got to Yorknew I was self proclaimed Hunter x Hunter fanboy, after watching the Greed Island fansubs and rewatching the tv series fansubbed I dived straight into the manga. At first Togashi's art was, how do you say hard to get into. But cleaned up volume art really had me hooked on NGL for a long time. This was all around 2004-2005, I went around proclaiming the series on the highest mountains to my anime club and friends, but then the dark times came.

The freaking nearly two year manga hiatus, I thought HxH might never see the light of animation again! So I'm totally thankful for the reboot we're getting right now

TL;DR
I've been hardcore into HxH since winter 2003 and reading the manga since 2005 (though I almost gave up honestly around 2009, I'm glad to be back)

I think it was around 2004 when I got into Hunter x Hunter. I was a really big fan of Yu Yu Hakusho back in the day (well I still am xD) and was browsing through a fansite when I found out that the creator had another series which he created after finishing YYH. I remember that there was only one picture, which I think was Gon in Whale Island, viewed from the side (profile). There wasn't much written about this series, just the premise which was enough to hook me in. Been a fan ever since, even though the hiatus was much too painful.

The T.V. series was dubbed and broadcast Saturday midnight in my country; I don't remember exactly when. It was the first shounen anime i watched that took itself seriously - hell it's probably the only shounen that relies solely on the appeal of its narrative rather than typical shounen devices like power fantasies and so on and so forth. There are other anime series that attempt the same thing (GITs, Monster, etc.) but none of them are really shounen. They all have one thing in common though: real literary value. On the other hand, nobody would ever dream of saying the same in respect to anime like Bleach and Naruto.

I've never really noticed much censoring in the magazine. However I can tell you that the French version (and I think the Spanish version) of the manga is pretty censored. I picked up a volume set in the Chimera Ants arc and it featured a lot of black squares/rectangles!

There are a few scenes in the Viz release that has these rectangles, I did not notice them in my Japanese copy.

No, it is just a cameo. She only appear along with Alluka as a silhouette .Most of us do presume that togashi played a part in her design.
I think you should consider watching the new anime ,it is pretty good.A great way to get over the hiatus.

Killua isn't exactly really sociable with his family.And this info is based on his perception so he probably doesn't know much about maha's relationship with the others member.

I never knew viz added those triangles/rectangles to the manga releases. I noticed them on some scans, but I'm guessing the ant arc has a lot of these haha

The only time I noticed the triangle censorship bars was when I was reading volume 23 during Killua vs those monkey chimera ants.

^wow I just checked and you were right! that's kinda dumb, I didn't think they were that bad enough to censor, but looking at how these could've ended up in a public library somewhere it might be understandable (however its rated "older teen"; some volumes should've been rated a bit higher IMO)

It would be cool if there were uncensored/uncut versions of the volumes, but I can't see that happening to be honest. Unless in Viz's case they release a VizBig edition of Hunter x Hunter which doesn't feature any censoring, that is if they're willing to give the series the VizBig treatment.

When did you guys get into Hunter x Hunter? I believe I got into the series back in 2005, which might not be as long as some of you. :P

That made me feel old (yeah I'm old). I got into series in real time as it first started...1998? I remember opening the Jump magazine of seeing that color spread of the first chapter in the bookstore (oh back then they don't wrap magazine in Japanese bookstore). I was a big fan of Togashi already since the Yu Yu Hakuso manga, which I started reading it around when vol.7 was published. I got creeped out by his art at first -- it had a strange mix of realistic seinen and cartoony shounen art, and there's an unsettling odd sense of humor/darkness, and a sense of cruelty where you felt this author won't hold back. But i am always a fan of horror so I'm so intrigued by his work. Then of course YYH was exploded to mainstream popularity after the anime.

By the time HxH started I've already outgrown shounen manga, and this (and Hikaru no Go) is the only series I still make an effort to read because I know Togashi will bring IT no matter what. Back then I rent taped new HxH episodes from the Japanese market from where I live, but I ended up disliking the 1999 anime adaptation so much that I stopped around Heaven's Arena (before it got good at Phantom troupe). Then shortly after I dropped most manga reading all together as life got busy.

It's only until last year I re-pick up the manga from where I left off (where Kite's head got chopped off). Then Togashi is back on hiatus, then the new anime reboot happened, it just couldn't come in a better timing. It's strange that time has changed so much, for ex: I no longer has someone to share the joy of following HxH with (my sister, who's since married and moved away), and my fiancé is completely clueless about the world of manga/anime that I didn't even bother to introduce him to it. Every Saturday/Sunday I'll just wait for him to do his own stuff so I can watch the new 2011 anime episode secretly.

Oh yeah my other favorite manga author is Ito Junji, whom I follow with fierce loyalty since my teenage days (when he was still writing in those girls horror manga magazine). So I caught all those little references Togashi made to Ito Junji.

Yea the censorship in the manga, I wish it was actually edited by Togashi himself. I hate black censor bars.

What I don't get is that there are a lot of other shonen series that don't get that heavily censored. Take Fullmetal Alchemist for example, both it and Hunter x Hunter are Viz properties and both are shonen. One of FMA's volumes feature a scene where the top half of a guy's face is smashed, featured in all its glory and with no censoring at all (pretty sure one of the only things Viz censored in FMA was what looked like a guy crucified). That's a lot more violent than those scenes from HxH's volume 23. Even if you argue that HxH belongs to the Shonen Jump Advanced line and that Fullmetal Alchemist belongs to the Viz Media line and that's why there's a difference when it comes to censorship, that doesn't explain why the Japanese version is also censored.
