Oh cool, Anime news network's Jason Thompsons house of 1000 manga finally reviews Hunter X Hunter, he seems to like it. And I enjoy his description of HxH as being like the Chimera Ants, absorbs other manga and spits them back out in mutated ways. HxH is all about subversion of typical manga tropes.

Ehh.. interesting summary I suppose. I don't agree with a lot of his points, but I do agree with the statement you mentioned. Other than that I think this article could've done with a bit more analysis and a little less factual inaccuracies and simple recounting...

^ Agreed, I am surprised he didn't do more research to for instance get his dates right :P! I still respect the guy he's got great taste in manga, if anyones read his other columns, and he goes out of his way to not really spoil TOO much secrets of HxH. But I found the review very all over the place, if I was new to the series I might actually find that review confusing and off-putting. Still I commend him because it IS hard to talk about and explain why HxH is so great. Still its awesome seeing someone big on AnimeNewsNetwork giving it props.

And we need those. I don't know why is so hard to introduce HxH to my friends. It's the best series out there, yet they prefer to watch Bleach first and I'm always "WTF?"

Definitely, the hardest thing about Hunter x Hunter in terms of suggesting it to friends is that it appears to be so cliche and generic from the outside. But the deeper you dig into the series the more and more you see it is the most original shonen there is. It really is a deconstruction of the genre itself and that is something that is nearly impossible to explain to people.

I helps if your friends are already predisposed to Shonen already, I tend to preface my friends to get through the Hunter exam before formulating opinions on the series and those who do, tend to LOVE the Zoldyck arc and Zevil Island stuff. It's just hard to tell where its going judging off the first volume or first 4-6 episodes of the anime adaptations. There are a few other tricks, simply showing them later scenes in the series or telling them about them ( I hate luring in fans with spoilers though since I hate them myself). For me Nen was the most enticing thing about HxH, plus I was already a HUGE YYH fan so that made it more appetizing to me.

When did you guys get into Hunter x Hunter? I believe I got into the series back in 2005, which might not be as long as some of you. :P

2001 was for me, but I did not know anyone there who liked HxH and I was casually watching it trough Animax (In that time, it was called Locomotion)

I dismissed the series quite a number of time before getting into it in 2005. This usually happen with most things I give a glance to.

I got into it wayyyy back in the year 2000, I was still a bit of a young lad back then and picked up a copy of Weekly Jump and seen this manga that was so different to everything else. I do not remember what chapter I read at the time, I think it may have been some where in York New. All I remember was being amazed by it. My father ended up buying me a few of the tankobon. When I came back from Japan I couldn't really keep up with it (at the time Dragon Ball Z had only just come out in Australia by the way lol), I tried telling my friends about it and noone really cared haha. But it was my little secret. Still kind of is.
