100% agree. I don't get why so many people rip on the Chimera Ants arc. It's one of my fave arcs!

By the way guys, thought you'd be interested to know that the official website of HxH 2011 has updated their character page with mugshots of Zushi and Wing:
http://www.ntv.co.jp/hunterhunter/character/other_03.html

They both look great. Love the character designs.

The palace invasion is one of my all time favorite! moments in Hunter x Hunter.
Agreed. In the manga too. It was like, two or three chapters without text bubbles, just pure narration, as the clock was ticking, and the art was just gorgeous my jaw dropped.

Yeah I've never understood why it's so badly criticised. It's epic, has some of the best fights ever in Hunter x Hunter and has the best ending of any story arc he has done so far. I see people always complaining that Gon never battled the King. Why does Gon have to fight the main enemy? I don't get that. In the whole manga he only ever faces the main enemy once (Genthru on G.I.). If you consider Hisoka a main enemy in Heaven's Arena I guess you can count him too, but every other arc Gon usually has no big battle with the main enemy.

Part of what I loved about Chimera Ants arc is that it subverts so many tropes of shonen manga. So many expect it to end in a massive battle with Gon and the King which in my opinion makes no sense. The best part of the ending of the arc in my opinion is that it doesn't end with a bang, but it ends with the King humbled in the arms of Komugi. The King finally learnt the value of life and love. This arc wasn't about explosions and death like many like to assume, it was about the value of life. This is evident through both Gon's, Netero's and the King's story in this arc, even the Royal Guards actually. Gon has lost the life of someone he truly cares about, hes willing to give up his own life to avenge it. Netero gives up his own life in an attempt to take down the King, Netero is thankful for his life and he goes out with a bang. The King lived a confused and puzzling life, never really understanding himself or his emotions. By the time he passes, he understands, he finally understands what the value of life is. The value of life is love. Netero spent his life chasing the thing he loved - challenging himself and having fun. Gon damn near kills himself to avenge a person he loves - Kite. The Royal Guards are willing to give their own lives out of love for their King. The value of life is the ability to love. Thats the message I took away from this arc.

Sorry for rambling, but I could talk about that arc for hours lol.

Re: Hunter x Hunter Hangout Thread

The release of NGL (slow with hiatuses) along with the sketchy art in the Jump releases didn't help NGL. I find the arc to be a bit draggy towards the end, its a bit long for my tastes. I enjoy how short the previous arcs are. Still its probably my 2nd favorite arc after Yorknew, Along these issues there were a lot of people who simply don't prefer the manga version over the 1999 adaptation so it took getting used to Togashi's style with NGL being their first venture into the manga adaptation. I would be one of those people. The volume releases made me fall in love with NGL, its amazingly well written and Togashi's craft has only improved over time. Again my only real critique of it is I feel it drags from the Invasion onward (similarly to the lengthy battle with Freeza in Dragonball) (to be fair thats when a lot of hiatuses were so I have some biased against it for that) I can't wait to see NGL in the new anime. I'm trying to convince my friends how awesome NGL is myself. Also as another unfair sidenote, I think Macho gon is a terrible design (his older look)

Re: Hunter x Hunter Hangout Thread

This arc wasn't about explosions and death like many like to assume, it was about the value of life.
This is something that doesn't get talked about too often. Killua is another key component of this. In the beginning of the series, because Killua was an assassin, it was thought that he didn't find value in human life. He kills mercilessly and without remorse. And then in the Final Phase we learn that he actually does care about people--namely, Gon. He wants friends. And then in the Zoldyck family arc (though it's probably more prevalent during the end of the Chimera Ant saga), you start to realize that he really cares about his family as well.

Killua, prior to his confrontation with Rammot, was the perpetual runaway in the series. He didn't just run away from enemies due to Illumi's needle. He ran from his family and his problems too. He didn't have ambition in life, though he was searching for it. But the necessity of Illumi's needle started to become clear midway through the arc. The reason why Killua was being controlled isn't only because of his unpredictable nature, but also because he doesn't believe that his own life has any sort of value either. There were so many situations wherein Killua would have died for Gon. And he accepted it. Killua's sense of self-worth only comes from being of use to the people he cares about.

Also as another unfair sidenote, I think Macho gon is a terrible design (his older look)
I don't think that it's supposed to look cool. When I first saw the transformation, I was sad for Gon. He looks silly. Despite being an adult, he has a child's gaze--it's sort of humorous and grotesque and tragic.

Re: Hunter x Hunter Hangout Thread

Am I the only who thinks Macho Gon looked beast?

And on the mugshots...

I said before the 1999 series had the more accurate drawing of Wing.
But now I see that was just the angle it was drawn out.

Wing's design is excellent!

Re: Hunter x Hunter Hangout Thread

I'd understand if Togashi designed Post-Gon to be grotesque, to give a feeling that it was really waaaaaaay beyond human capacity, and to give it an intensely freakishly feeling of abnormality. It had to look exaggerated to give you the feeling that indeed, he (Gon) is exaggerating. Because that's just his character, and for the reader to feel and see the difference, of how Gon had to defy limits just to defeat Pitou- to also paint the picture more on the differences in their power.

But the matter of liking the design or not is totally subjective. To each his own. :amuse

Re: Hunter x Hunter Hangout Thread

I thought the design was instantly memorable and incredibly sad when you consider the circumstances. Normally in other shonen such a 'power up' is meant to be badass and awesome (Super Saiyan, anyone?). However here it is played up as something reckless and incredibly tragic. Going beyond ones limits isn't a good thing for Gon. 'Powering Up' damn near kills him, Togashi took what would be a 'cool' moment in any other manga and made it sad and ugly. I love the way Togashi plays with tropes.

It was quite...fitting. I think the bigger shock was the clothes He had. It was insane. That contradiction between a human, a beast, a kid and an adult. Everything into one, was simply epic designed.

And DAT HAIR.

Re: Hunter x Hunter Hangout Thread

I once read that One Piece volumes are split in half and sold seperately in Brazil. Is it the same with Hunter x Hunter and/or any other manga series?
I never heard about One Piece being published like that over here, but I can't say for sure since I don't read One Piece. Never heard of anything like that over here, though.

Also, I like the volume covers from the Brazil HxH volumes a lot more. The number of the volumes in the covers is in the correct position and the same size as the Japanese versions. When I saw those pictures of the American covers the big volume numbers and the small "square" at the bottom striked me as really odd. Also, instead of the Yoshihiro Togashi in Japanese like in the original covers, they added circles that look exactly like the Japanese ones that say: "Yo-shi-hi-ro To-ga-shi", with each of the syllabes being in a circle. A nice touch.

Re: Hunter x Hunter Hangout Thread

I mostly remember my shock, thinking "I hope Gon doesn't look like this forever, its kinda dumb looking" Its very similar to Yusuke's transformation in Yu Yu Hakusho. It's classic Shonen style to have long hair and big muscles represent a powerful transformation, I just find it silly because of the short shots. I wish it was a bit MORE beastial, or something. It's totally like I said guys my own personal artistic biased. I've come to respect it from a story perspective especially after seeing how it plays out in the Election arc. I just remember predicting "Gon is gonna power up magically and beat Pitou, if anything happens but that im happy" and it did, so while the story explains it and it had consequences I wasn't huge on it. Again I think waiting years and years to finish NGL and seeing Macho Gon just left a bad taste in my mouth. And I don't think I'm the only one since its practically become a meme amongst other HxH fans.

I've started liking NGL more and more as I reread it, when I get back to Macho gon in the viz volumes I may come around on it, these are just reason I think some people don't care for NGL as much as others. It's still my 2nd favorite part of the story, I'm just not wild on the last 3rd I guess, but I need to read it all again to judge it better.

Something I hate, is fans who don't like NGL because they think Ants are too "out of nowhere" when that couldn't be further from the truth. I adore NGL for how it builds upon the world we already have (furthering the magical beast element, introducing the outside, showing us more of what Pro Hunters can do, Netero, and seeing Gon and Killua's characters develop so much more) But some people still whine that after GI Hunter X Hunter "jumps the shark" mostly cause they just seem to dislike ants by concept for some reason, when I think they're great.

You know, in terms of playing with tropes Futurefrog, its very similar to Toguro in Yu Yu Hakusho, even though he's an antagonist, he is someone Yusuke looked up to. But his design shows how inhuman he's become and its very gross and hard to look at. I love that, I just didn't get that same shock or amazement with Macho Gon.

Re: Hunter x Hunter Hangout Thread

I think Gon's transformation was a success. It was shocking, grotesque and showed played on the trope of a kid drastically transforming his body in a 'power up'. Think of how Goku can transform into a Giant Ape, yet his body magically reverts back to normal showing no signs that it had just been massively expanded and reshaped. Here Gon fucks his whole body up trying to do a 'power up' transformation. Gon is reckless bro.

Re: Hunter x Hunter Hangout Thread

Gon's transformation was insanely beastly. Where as usually in shounen one typically gains a random powerup with no drawbacks, this on the other hand was basically throwing your life away for the sake of power which makes it more dramatic because we knew that this would leave Gon in a half dead state. And IMO he is the most powerful force in the HXH universe when he went into that state. He easily handled Pitou and his injury of losing his arm felt like something he wanted so he could be like Kaito in that moment. I wonder will he ever reach such a level when he gets older naturally,

Re: Hunter x Hunter Hangout Thread

Idk, Although Mereum couldn't behead Pitou when he swatted at his tail. I don't know if he used nen there or not, also Mereum gets stronger later once he comes back from near death. I'd argue that the King is still stronger, with Macho Gon probably coming in second. He is meant to have endless potential so aging himself forcefully, it makes sense that he'd get that strong.

Re: Hunter x Hunter Hangout Thread

Post-Nuke Meryem was the strongest character in Hunter x Hunter. He just kept getting stronger in stronger up until his eventual death. I'd say Uber Gon is the 2nd strongest character we have seen in the series so far.

Speaking of Macho Gon, this is actually a really cool fan art! I'm interested in how the 2011 anime will animate this. NGL anime sooooOOooo can't wait.
