i don't understand how they can pressure in mangaka to do anything. i mean what will they do if he just stop doing something? especially oda, it#s not like they will cancel one piece just because he wants to lessen his burden. before i would support crappy movies i would rather take a month break to work on that one solely. somehow mangakas seems to be natural workaholics.
Mangaka are employees of a company. If they do not do something they are under contract to do, they do not get paid. That is how they are "pressured" to do things, it is part of their job. I do not know who you think is pressuring these mangaka to write the movies but you seem to be under the mistaken impression they are teenagers being forced to do homework. Not only are they not being forced to write them, they are getting paid for their troubles.

---------- Post added at 04:33 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:29 PM ----------

think about it. If you were the CEO of an Anime company which makes a movie or you were the CEO of Shuisha wouldn’t you beg the mangaka or try to pressure him to be somehow involved with the production of the movie in the HOPE to reproduce even a tiny fraction of the success of Strong World?
Oda actually didn’t want to be involved with another movie because the workload was way too much, yet he is involved with the new movie. This pretty much proves for me that he was either begged or pressured into working on the new movie.
What are you babbling about? Beg? Pressured? They give them money. Oda was paid to write Strong World. It also gave him creative control over how his own product is adapted. What do you think he is, a ten year old? The studio offered him money to write the movie, more than he stood to make from royalties alone. Kubo, Toriyama, Kishi, and Togashi were paid too. My god, these people are fucking adults, this is a business.

So Naruto movies are yearly while ... One Piece movies are roughly every 2/3 years.
http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=rel&aid=411

Only 2010 had no movie, 2011 was used for two short 3D movies. Collecting the information takes less than a minute. :P

It's a good thing Bleach movies aren't released every year, helps to escape the mediocrity, nah it's not. Bleach movies ooze of fanservice.

Oda probably wants his movies to end up good and loved, thus he helps the team, if he wants to. I think to remember him commenting of not wanting summaries [Alabasta, Drum arcs] anymore. It's a commitment that disturbes them from drawing as usually, so of course he will get compensated exponentially, he's the damn Tennō of the manga industry right now. :D

And as Kaiten mentioned, they get money for every page published, everything else that has something to do with the franchise is a bonus with royalties.

I don't think that Oda needs to worry anymore if he get's paid, really. His job is to write a manga, movies are optional. I was also talking about the workload, which is already huge for them. There was a shedule going around about sorachis working hours, which restricted him to ~6 hours of sleep each day and then these people should also work on a movie? it just looks immense and thanks for explaining to me that they are getting paid and it promotes their manga. i would never had guessed that without your help...

Be sure that he is not working for free, millionaire or not.

Tbh, I would rather have four more chapters a year than another movie. They can end up great, often they do not.

I have read a lot of the interviews of Oda. In the ones regarding strong world he mentions repeatedly how much work it took and that he never intends to do it again and that he was talked into it by a friend from TOIE.
Obviously he was paid and all are paid for their work but fact is that doing a movie takes a lot of their time and not all mangaka are money grabbing people but all CEOs are.

I will say it again. My main point from my last post was that the trend of Mangaka being involved with Movies comes from the success of Strong World and is HEAVILY pushed by the chefs of the companies (Anime and Manga)

I know that certain Mangaka were involved with movies LONG before there was Strong World, however that so many WSJ mangaka now suddenly become involved with movies is certainly because of the success of strong world and the try to transfer its success to other property from its publisher

Being involved in a movie production takes a lot of the author’s time. Some may be really only involved because of the money but some might have been talked into it. We will never know.

I think you guys are forgetting about other big WSJ franchise with an upcoming movie Saint Seiya which IIRC also has the mangaka's approval.. Some years ago.. Like 8 years ago IIRC, Tenkai-hen was released which was supposedly a way to connect the cancelled SS story with an upcoming SS sequel, but Masami Kuruamda the author didn't like it.. Seems like this new movie will be author approved.

So yeah, seems like authors doing movies of their franchise is the thing today.

Not all, but many mangaka? It's the CEO's job to generate money, you shouldn't say that with such a negative connotation.

There were more successful anime movies before Strong World, that argument isn't that solid.^^ Togashi is not the type to follow any of their orders, Kubo's design for the movie[that's his participation] were simply put, shity at best Imo and Road to Ninja may relate to the current plot of the arc, the moon-eye plan/Madara.

OP:SW had such a big success, because the production company advertized it like hell, because OP is/was it's peak of popularity at that time and because it sold like hell, even before the movie. Attaching the name doesn't hurt though.

The participation of a mangaka doesn't guarantee it becoming good.

Wow, that's a good start, seems like I finally have to start reading it. :p

p
I’m an economic student. I didn’t mean it in a negative way. I meant that the main driving force for doing something for authors and artist doesn’t have to be money especially if they have already a lot but for CEOs the main driving force is money.

There were more successful anime movies before Strong World, that argument isn't that solid.^^
There were more successful movies who are “filler or tie in” movies of manga franchises? Can you name some?
And when I talk about success I don’t only mean the 50 Million it did earn which by the way is the 4-5 what an OP movie normally earns. I mean the 1 million extra readers it got the series. 1 million new potential readers from whom some bought old volumes and caused HUGE backdoor sales. 1 million new potential buyers for merchandise article etc. etc.
Togashi is not the type to follow any of their orders, Kubo's design for the movie[that's his participation] were simply put, shity at best Imo and Road to Ninja may relate to the current plot of the arc, the moon-eye plan/Madara.
And Oda does way less work than he did during strong world. My main point stands which is that they try to emulate the success of strong world by attaching the names of the authors to the movies.

If you mean that they want new movies to be successful or more successful than another movie, the clear answer is yes. Aren't movies more like advertizement anyway? They help making the franchise popular, putting the name of the mangaka on it helps, but it's not like they didn't do that before too. Oda is not the first one to help with a movie. Maybe the "mangaka help with movies" situation is only perceived as such.

Them printing that Toriyama will take part in it is a reassurement for the old fans, to get people interested instead of taking it as just another DB adaption, he might also crave to work in the industry again, work with his biggest franchise, not creating another one tank series. The last ones were hmm... not good.^^ Togashi probably sees it as his properity and should know from experience what kind of crap will come out of an movie, if the original creator doesn't participate in the production. Kishimoto as mentioned before could create an alternative to the series, a "what if" if the current plot goes wrong. His involvement for such an scenario is highly preferable, he might not get another chance like that. While all this doesn't exclude execs from asking the mangaka to be part of the movie creation, it could just as easily give a reason for the current situation.

Of course. It's called a business trend. Something is extremely successful, so they do it again with the same property and others. Money talks, bullshit walks. Oda might have overworked himself on it, but obviously it was worth him to do it, otherwise he wouldn't do it again. Most mangaka would jump at a chance for their hands to be in an adaptation like this. Most of them aren't asked because they're designed to capitalize on popularity and not much else. I'm not sure I have any sympathy for them.

And as fans we dislike their attention being taken elsewhere but they can do what they want...sooo :oh

The serialization meeting to decide which series' will be cancelled and which new series will start occured some time in the last few days, (thanks to one of the assistants of Sket Dance).

The series that are most likely going to be cancelled are Kurogane and Pajama na Kanojo, with an extremely slight but still possible chance of either Koisome, Bulge, or Takamagahara tanking hard and getting the boot.

It also doesn't look like the Golden Future Cup will be happening this year.

It is a little hard to compare Toriko #2 to the second volume of any other series. Volume one and two went on sale the same day; volume one debuted at number 10 and sold 69,177, volume 2 debuted at number 11 selling 66,847. http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2008-11-12/japanese-comic-ranking-november-4-10

The better comparison would be volume 3, which debuted at number six, selling 116,789 copies. http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-02-11/japanese-comic-ranking-february-3-9/2

Osakaya is the third largest selling comic distributor in Japan and publishes the top 500 selling comics every week. The top 30 is almost identical to the Oricon list so it is very accurate.

These are approximately where the Jump Comics that were released last month would rank on Oricon if they went past the top 50.

*82 - Bakuman 19
*87 - BLEACH 55
102 - Haikyuu!! 1
110 - REBORN! 39
150 - Beelzebub 16
186 - Nisekoi 1 (released 2 months ago)
282 - Pajama na Kanojo 1
390 - magico 6
412 - Kochikame 180

New series by a previously popular author...not outrageously weird but they completely nailed it considering the sales it has produced.
