Re: The NFL Thread

There was some nonsense that because it was ruled a TD it couldn't be overturned anyway on the basis that the ball was a tie...or some nonsense

Well, Gary, we've had two games in a row now where refs have massively altered games. The Pats and the Ravens both had chances, so you can say that was 50-50 anyway, but with the Packers and the Seahawks, the refs were downright wrong and stole the game from the Packers.

Re: The NFL Thread

The Great Fail Mary:fail

I'm really looking forward to this firestorm. That call is completely indefensible and the NFL knows it. If they want to defend it they have to call it simultaneous possession because there is just nothing else they can call it, but it's not. That was a 100% clear cut interception and anybody, with even a tiny amount of football knowledge, can tell that at a glance.

Right now the officiating in Football is more fishy than Boxing.

According to the rule ESPN displayed, Jammin, there is no such thing as simultaneous possession. If the offensive player grabs it first, it's a catch, if not, well it's not a catch. In this case, it clearly was a pick.

Here's the rule.

Rule 8 - Section 3 - Article 1 - Item 5: Simultaneous Catch.
If a pass is caught simultaneously by two eligible opponents, and both players retain it, the ball belongs to the passers. It is not a simultaneous catch if a player gains control first and an opponent subsequently gains joint control. If the ball is muffed after simultaneous touching by two such players, all the players of the passing team become eligible to catch the loose ball.

In this case the defending player is clearly holding the ball with the receiving player having a hand on it. The only way that could be ruled in favor of the receiving player is if it was ruled that both players were in possession of the ball; therefor it would be a touchdown. However, in this case it is clear that the defending player has full possession of the ball, and even has it cradled, and the receiving player only has one hand on the ball and never really got control of it. So it can't really be argued to be a case of simultaneous possession.

But that is what the officials ruled it to be.

Re: The NFL Thread

Simultaneous possession, by the rules, is pretty much impossible IMO

There's even more fishy stories coming out. Supposedly someone with ties to the Seahawks already officiated a game of theirs...

Re: The NFL Thread

I'm just loving this. It's such a wonderful fiasco. All because the NFL was too cheap to pony up the under 100k per team per year.:XD

Don't get me wrong the reffing situation sucks but it seems to me like Goodell and the owners got greedy one time to many and now their finally paying for it. They thought, "We don't need experienced refs" and they were just completely wrong. And since most of the the refs have other jobs which they normally do in the off-season, they really have no greater incentive to hurry things along than they did a week ago. In fact they have an enormously strong bargaining position now because, unlike the players, they NFL need them more than they need the NFL.

It just feels good to see the NFL front office that usually just bullies groups into doing what it wants finally getting the backlash they deserve.

---------------------------------

Even more hilarious is that Goodell came out and said that the official made the right call because that's a straight up insult to the intelligence of every fan in the league. We have eyes. We know the call was wrong. He knows the call was wrong.

So much for not tarnishing the shield.:amuse

Re: The NFL Thread

I was hearing speculation early this morning that Goodell might even overturn the result and give the Packers the win, because he's within his rights as a commissioner to do so...but lol, what a disgrace

Re: The NFL Thread

I was watching an ESPN show earlier and they showed a tweet from someone about how the NFL's always cracking down about "conduct detrimental to the league," but the joke in the tweet was, "Whose CONDUCT is DETRIMENTAL now?"

I'm not that in love with the NFL that I'm necessarily willing to watch any more games until this is resolved. Roger Goodell shows time and time again why he's the worst commissioner in major American sports. I can understand not reversing the call because of all of the betting that went on, although there really shouldn't be betting on professional sports, but that's an entirely different issue, and it shouldn't come into play in the result of a sporting event, but that is how is it. Goodell's just part of a corrupt organization and never acts in the interests of the players. Look at how he treated the current and former Saints players in the "bounty scandal," and of those 50,000 documents they claimed to have, not one actually showed that there was any intent to injure.

Mike and Mike had an amusing Power Ranking earlier about the best name for last night's fiasco. They settled on Adam Schefter's suggestion of The Inaccurate Reception as the best name out of all of the suggestions they received through twitter.

Re: The NFL Thread

A local radio guy said that this entire season has an asterisk next to it...and I don't know how I feel about that

Re: The NFL Thread

Gary, in a two day period, we saw two games massively affected by reffing issues, plus most of the other games were affected to some degree. There's also the whole issue with the Saints, and that while the Saints have lost all three games, the three teams that beat the Saints are a combined 0-6 in their other games.

I don't see it as the season being a wash, but as I previously stated, I can see this as a season where a decent, but not outstanding, team such as the Falcons wins the SB, whereas they might never have won in a normal season.

If the replacement refs stick around for a long time, or even the entire season, teams with big running games should have an advantage.

I was talking about reconciling it with myself if the Ravens continue to have success...or even the ultimate success. No one looks back to 1987 when there were scab players and puts an asterisk next to the Redskins' Super Bowl win, but the way MANY, MANY analysts and experts are talking I think some might have this inclination.

And I don't understand why the teams with running games would benefit at all. No one that is run-heavy on offense goes anywhere these days. Just because the officiating is more inconsistent and suspect doesn't change this fact for me.

Oh, you. :P

Well, a lot more holding calls are going to go unpunished, so players are going to be able to run more effectively. Plus, if you have a good running game and a good passing game, you can throw it up and get a pass interference call way too easily right now, so you can think exploit the defense who might drop into a Cover 2 and run on them. In general, of course this is a passing league, and running has become secondary for almost every team, but I can see things being different this year.

Imagine if Jamaal Charles was on a good team, for example, or if Chris Johnson could still run. This year, with the way things are, they could be winning games for their teams. While Jamaal Charles was extremely impressive against the Saints in week 3, the Saints have no defense right now, so...

Ray Rice benefited from some questionable flags to extend drives and then exploit the defense that then had to drop back into coverage more, so it worked for the Ravens to some degree.

Re: The NFL Thread

Oh me? :oh

But it depends on game to game Frosty. There were also instances where holding wasn't called when it should have, and was called when it shouldn't. Plus holding is called on passing plays just as often as running...from my impression anyway.

There were some instances on Sunday night where there was a lot more contact on receivers than there usually is these days without penalties being called. That sort of shifted the other way in the second half but there was again, instances it was called when it shouldn't and the opposite.

So I can't really look so forward ahead and say that this year is going to be more of a running year, sorry. Not when only one team had a fullback active for all games last year - The Ravens :p

Re: The NFL Thread

I don't know if we can know if it will really put an asterisk beside the whole season yet. It's too early for that 3 games into the season; though there might be some impact on home-field and the wildcard race. It's early enough that, if teams are given the chance to play legit games, the good teams will come together and the bad teams will fall apart.

The exception would be if, for example, the Raven's were to beat the Patriots in the playoffs with home field advantage based on that garbage of a win on sunday. That would absolutely deserve an asterisk. In my opinion, the reverse would also have been true if Sunday's game had gone the other way. But that won't necessarily happen.

I don't think the whole season is compromised yet though, it'll take a few more weeks like this one for that.

------------------------------------------------

And, though it's too early to even think about the playoffs, can you even imagine a playoff game reffed by these guys? Or a superbowl? I can't. Disaster wouldn't even begin to describe it.

Re: The NFL Thread

How was it garbage though? I'm trying not to be biased, but it seemed to be officiated horribly on both sides and it just game down to who had the ball last.

That's exactly it. I mean, it's impossibly to say how the officiating effected that game but it definitely did.

Both of Torry Smith's touchdown catches were push-offs (though admittedly the first one was fairly minor). The final drive was one giant mass of penalty provided first downs, including that insane illegal contact penalty they called within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage. The game winning field goal looked very questionable. Ray Lewis spent most of the game straight up mugging Gronkowski at midfield. To top of all of that, every-time the Pat's tried to go no huddle the Ref's stopped the game for 30 seconds or more giving the defense time to rest. And all that is just the tip of the iceberg.

Now there can be no doubt that the Raven's suffered too, but did they suffer THAT much? I don't know, if we don't know then I think an asterisk has to go on it.

Re: The NFL Thread

Well, Jammin, if the Ravens won home field advantage over the Patriots on a tiebreaker or something, the solution could be just to host the game at a neutral site, although I doubt the NFL would go in that direction, because that would be admitting that they were at fault.
