Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

Actually titan was selling 700-800k by vol 5 already.
Shingeki was selling 700-800K by volume three. Assassination Classroom sells about as well as Shingeki did, after the same number of volumes.

---------- Post added at 10:52 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:37 PM ----------

Man, Assassination Classroom's numbers are amazing! If it can get an anime with the same production value as Shingeki no Kyojin I'm curious to know how the sales will compare to it.
It's hard to say, Assassination is already so popular. Shingeki seems to have hit a nerve with people. The anime has been really popular, comparable to Monogatari Series or Madoka Magica. K-On was the last manga adaption I can remember having this type of impact on anime fandom. I can imagine Assassination Classroom having a similar impact, but at the same time that's like claiming to know winning lottery numbers. What is happening with Shingeki right now is a once in ten years type of thing. It's hard to say it will happen again, without feeling like I'm being completely arbitrary.

So basically any anime will do since outside of the first episode and a few sequences the production values of Kyojin have been ass.

Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

The volume 1 and 2 of AC also sold around that.
If you are talking about the 1 and 2, titan had already sold 900k while on rank. I'm talking about the beginning of sales of vol5. The sales of titan had a spike when vol 4 came out I believe, AC was always big but didn't grow at all after the first 2.

Actually, the volume 1 and 2 of SnK was sold about 600k to 620k while on the ranking (of course this is before the anime started). So, technically, the volume 1 and 2 of AC sold more than SnK.

Also, it seems AC didn't grow because like 10 spots of that ranking is taking by SnK (for long time, now). That's why it seems series is selling lower than usual because of SnK.

Seeing all 10 volumes of Shingeki no Kyojin in the top 30 is just amazing. It has sold over 20 million copies already right?

Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

Nope, a little less than 16 000 000 for the moment, and more than 8 800 000 just for the oricon period 2013 (starting 19th november 2012).
During that period, each old volume (from 1 to 8) sold more than 730 000, quite an impressive figure, especially when we know the volumes 1 and 2 already reached the million mark at the end of 2012.

Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

Well there certainly are 20 million copies in print, not sold yet though.

Attack on Titan Manga #11 Gets 1.85-Million 1st Printing

The Twitter account for the Attack on Titan manga stated last week that publisher Kodansha produced 1.85 million copies of the 11th volume of Hajime Isayama's Attack on Titan manga for its first print run next month.

Volume 11 will come in a regular edition and a special edition. The special edition will retail for 1,200 yen (about US$12) and include four sheets with 36 stickers that recreate key manga scenes in color as well as "cute" anime illustrations. The special edition will also bundle two 3D postcards of Eren and other characters.

The 10 volumes of Hajime Isayama's popular Attack on Titan manga now have over 20 million copies in print in Japan. All 10 volumes have regularly appeared in the top 40 of Oricon's weekly manga sales charts. The first five volumes released in North America ranked on Amazon's Best Sellers in Manga Comics & Graphic Novels Top 20 list last month.

Those are based on 3 days.

Also, it has been one month since Gin no Saji's anime has started and it looks still quiet.

Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

I don't know what people expect sometimes. Gin no Saji is already a top seller overall, and by volume. Gin no Saji already sells more than 700,000 copies per volume, expecting an increase from such a high figure is a little unrealistic.

Bakuman sales did not increase after it's anime debuted either. Bakuman was also already a bestseller before it's anime debuted, also was by established mangaka, was also the follow up of a major hit, and also had an unusual topic. The Bakuman anime has now had three, 25 episode seasons.

Kingdom's actually doing a lot better. 230K? I don't remember ever seeing it over 170K before. The 2nd season of the anime is looking to be helping it a lot better than the first.

Well, the second season of Kingdom is insanely better than the first, so that must be it....

Shingeki's week after week after week stay in the Oricon charts probably raised expectations. Though of vastly different genres, both Silver Spoon and Shingeki are similar in that they reached one million before having an anime.

What probably keeps Shingeki in the charts are the cliffhangers which make people desperate to know what happens next. Silver Spoon on the other hand is a relaxing watch and yeah, I agree - more similar to Bakuman.

Yeah, that's what I meant. Since both of them reached one million before having an anime, I thought Gin no Saji will have an anime-effect like Shingeki no Kyojin. Plus, Gin no Saji is by one of current most famous mangakas in these days, so I expected an anime-effect.

What probably keeps Shingeki in the charts are the cliffhangers which make people desperate to know what happens next. Silver Spoon on the other hand is a relaxing watch and yeah, I agree - more similar to Bakuman.
Yeah, I guess your right. SnK has many ups and downs in the story (I don't mean as boring), people want to see more. For Gin no Saji, the story is pretty steady (it really doesn't have a thing to make the audience exciting), so it is more difficult to get boost its popularity.

Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

What does SnK have to do with Gin no Saji? Do they have anything in common, other than at one point selling a similar number of copies per volume? Was the hype the same, did both receive the same amount of advertising? Are the two anime equally popular? It's not like these series exist in a little bubble, with identical sets of circumstances, just because they used to sell a similar number of copies. One has nothing to do with the other. Out of all the thousands of manga titles in Japan, only eight had volumes that sold more than Gin no Saji before the anime came out. What are the actual odds of increasing sales from that already lofty position?

Content has never had to do with success, in any media. All kinds of shitty books, music, movies, food, and clothes are popular. Logic has fuck all to do with it.

Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

Before the premiere, the only ones excited for Shingeki was its manga fandom. 2chan predicted low sales for it, and well it was generally not expected to be a hit.

Basically, it was its episode one that got the ball rolling. It only get an English simulcast at episode 2 and Kodansha only loosened the purse strings at three episodes in.

So most of its early hype was fan-generated, rather than advertising-generated.

How a manga will get boosted sales will depend on how it well its anime will impress and convert new fans, rather than high anticipation from its existing fandom.
