Publisher Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings (2009-2015)

Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

Indeed, France has a traditional strong comic market so its figures are not representative for all Europe. To illustrate that point, here is what the comparative study says :

part of the comic sales in the book industry (2010)
Japan : 23.4%
France :6.4%
US :2.2%

US history with comics are... complicated. It's not as simple as "US thinks comics are for kids". American comics were much different in the 30's, 40's, and 50's, more similar to France or Japan. There was a wider variety of genres, not just superhero comics, and more comics marketed towards adult readers, most famously EC Comics. In the early 1950's there was wide spread concern about violent content, and social commentary, in comics. This led to the creation of the Comic Code Authority, and self imposed industry wide censorship. Super hero's and children's comics were practically all that survived. General perception shifted, and comics came to be considered something for children and teens, of marginal literary merit.

Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

You can find some French figures for 2012 in the table here (ventes=sales, tirage=print)
There is also an interesting comparison of the French, Japanese and American comic markets in the appendixes

is there a source that provides the sales of all time in France or the us ( of manga as a whole or individual titles ) ?

i would like to know the manga sales compared us comics and french ones

Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

Not that I know. This is already the only siteI have found that provide sales numbers for the last few years. Those data are given by 2 statistics companies and they are not public

Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

Not necessarily, no. France, Belgium, and Italy traditionally have held comics (Bande Dessinée and Fumetto, respectively) in high regard, viewing them as legitimate artistic and literary media. Manga is highly regarded in France and Belgium (don't know as much about Italy), with significantly more manga available in French than there are in English.

Same here.
The sales are higher than the US ones (not as high as the french ones though) and there are tons of titles. I think that Italy is probably the country where there are most licensed manga, and the number keep increasing not only with well known Japanese hits but even with niche titles.
Also the American comics are beloved here, and we have our own market of Italian comics.

Cross Manage \o/

It's low but I'm glad to see it there.

[Asgaroth]

Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

the editor of cross manage would jump in excitement if it was published by a third tier publisher. In jump it would be more like:

"Hey, did you see? cross manage made it into the oricon chart."
"No, didn't see it in there"
"What are you talking about? Right here, at spot #50"
"What, the oricon chart goes up to 50? never looked past 10... such a ridiculous world we live in. by the way, cross manage will be canceled"

[MattC302]

Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

Well, this likely marks the end of Cross Manage. I never got into the series(because I didn't want to waste my time on a series likely to get canceled), but I really enjoyed the one shot. And browsing some of the most recent chapters in the English Shonen Jump, I'm really impressed with Kaito's artwork. I hope to see Kaito back with something new soon when/if Cross Manage gets canceled.

Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

Cross Manage hasn't been out of the bottom five in god knows how long. What were you all expecting?

Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

Huh, Gintama outsold Toriko on release day for the first time in a while. From what I remember Toriko for a while now has always premiered slightly above Gintama. I wonder if the gender bender arc in Gintama was really that well received?
