Death Note's Obata Adapts All You Need Is Kill Novel Into Manga

The first 2014 issue of Shueisha's Young Jump magazine is announcing on Thursday that manga artist Takeshi Obata (Hikaru no Go, Death Note) will launch an adaptation of All You Need Is Kill novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka (Modern Magic Made Simple). Ryōsuke Takeuchi (ST&RS) is drafting the story adaptation, and Obata is basing the character designs on the original novel illustration work by Yoshitoshi ABe (Serial Experiments Lain, Texhnolyze). The series will debut in the magazine's combined 6th/7th 2014 issue, which will ship on January 9.

All You Need Is Kill revolves around a battle-armored soldier who finds himself dying and reincarnating over and over again during an alien invasion. Viz Media published Sakurazaka's novel in English to launch its Haikasoru imprint for Japanese science fiction and fantasy.

Edge of Tomorrow, a live-action film adaptation of the novel, will open in the United States on June 6, 2014 after being delayed earlier from this year. The film stars Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Charlotte Riley, Kick Gurry, and Marianne Jean-Baptiste.

Viz will publish an All You Need Is Kill graphic novel adaptation — separate from Young Jump's manga — next May. Writer Nick Mamatas (Move Under Ground) and artist Lee Ferguson (Green Arrow, Miranda Mercury) are working on this graphic novel.

So, another WSJ author has moved to more mature magazine.

Another two actually...
Oh, yeah. But, I don't really have an image for Takeuchi being WSJ author since he didn't really had success in WSJ.

I don't know if we can say that he moved. I don't know the novel, but it seems very short by what I searched, only one volume.

I'll read it for sure. Everything with Obata's name is must read.

True enough XD
Still, this adaptation may end up being great, but I kinda feel it's a shame since I was one of the people that wanted to see another Ohba x Obata series...

Yeah, this comes off to me as like that Blue Dragon manga that only went on for a little while before the Obata/Ooba team started. Their last manga was too big of a hit for Shuueisha to not try to get them to work together again.

Oh wow, after finishing ST&RS Im glad to see Ryōsuke Takeuchi is back in action here. Looking forward to this series, I wonder if the chances are high for Viz bringing it out here in the English speaking countries as they do like the Bakuman folks as well as the All You Need Is Kill franchise.

Yup, it looks like it going to be a mini-series; since it is written "集中連載" on the picture, I think it most likely meant for "短期集中連載" (which means mini-series).

Even though, Obata going to serialize in Young Jump means that he started the relationship with Young Jump. So, I don't find it weird if Obata will officially move to seinen magazine.

Obata will probably just work a bit on a mini series till Ohba worked enough on the next big work. Obata did the same with Blue-Dragon even though that simple ended as a flop. Also Young Jump is at least Jump and the seinen aspect has more to do with the material rather than Obata changing directions for forever.

That's true, but I think it is just normal, Obata is a respectable artist, all magazines want to have him.
I think he receives invitations all the time and he chooses what looks more interesting. Artistis has this freedom, I guess.
However, Ohba and Obata are strong together, if Ohba makes a good shounen series, Obata will draw it for sure.

I don't have complains if he moves to a seinen magazines and continue drawing good series. :hmm

I think so, too. It is just entertainment until Ohba come up with the next series.

But, the question is whether Shounen Jump is desperate enough for Ohba/Obata to return. I don't think Ohba doesn't really have to make a story shounen all the time; he can work for seinen as well, like Death Note showed that Ohba is able to work in seinen magazine.

Obata has had success without Ohba. Hikaru no Go was with a different author. The source material this time is better than Blue Dragon. All You Need is Kill is supposed to be a good book. Shueisha also happens to be the publisher of All You Need is Kill, part of their otherwise underwhelming Super Dash Bunko line. Shueisha is probably delighted to have Obata help promote one of their light novels, considering how badly they have struggled with that medium. I also doubt this lasts more than three or four volumes. The original is only 276 pages long.

Full info for Gokukoku no Brynhildr:

Production: Arms
Director: Izaizumi Kenichi
Character Design: Karasu Hiroki

Arms also animated Elfen Lied. Not the greatest studio, but not horrible. The creative staff do not have overly impressive resume. My expectations are pretty low, if PV's look good I'd still probably give it a try.
