This is the picture which Tachibana Kenichi (illustrator of Terra Formars) has drawn for the celebration of Bessatsu Margaret's 50th Year Anniversary.

Pretty funny drawing, by Tachibana Kenichi. On another note, his handwriting is awful :o

well that's as good an indication as any as to what (regular) series YJ holds dearest, huh

Well, those three all took places in the top-selling series of the year. Kinda makes sense. Especially since YJ doesn't get really big hits all that often. Not to mention that Tokyo Ghoul and Terraformars are fairly new and don't have any anime or games yet.

Not just YJ, I think basically all of seinen magazines are more difficult to find big hits series than shounen magazines.

why do you think so? There are several big seinen titles like Gantz, Zetman and more out there. I have more the feeling that in general darkish stories aren't that welcomed in japan and have more difficulties to reach many people. But on the other hand it is the same in the western world. The biggest titles are Young Adult works, like Harry Potter.

I'm not sure if Zetman considered big since its tank sale isn't really that high; it is about same as the current World Trigger.

I'm only focusing on within Japan; I don't really know the reception for the seinen series in the the western world.

I don't think its the darkness of any given series that makes it sell less, it's the age demo. A shonen title can sell a ridiculous amount because it's targeted at those with more disposable money. Seinen by and large aims at an older crowd with more priorities than buying tankobons en masse, so they never really do as well. makes it all the more fascinating when they do do well, like with the three on the YJ cover here.

Nonsense, there are plenty of seinen bestsellers. St. Young Men, Uchuu Kyoudai, Sakamoto desu ga?, Teraformers, JoJolion, Real, Sangetsu no Lion, Thermae Romae, Vagabond, Ohkiku Furikabutte, Kinou Nani Tabeta, Hoozuki no Reitetsu, Billy Bat, and One Punch Man are all bestsellers. So is Chihayafuru, a josei manga. There should be plenty more. Those are just what I found looking at last week's Oricon rankings and the 2013 top 50 by volume. The truth is that Young Jump is like every other magazine. There's always a small handful of bestsellers, surrounded by series with more modest sales, or that don't chart at all. Weekly Jump is the only magazine that produces so many bestsellers at once. They are the weird ones. Nothing should be compared to Jump, whether that is Sunday, Magazine, Young Jump, Young Magazine, Afternoon, Spirits, Shounen Champion, or w/e.

I dont understand how you reach that. The people who are considered shonen shouldnt possibly have a larger disposable income than those considered seinen unless somehow shonen people have jobs now and etc.

I didnt know Oofuri was considered seinen focused, highly doubt its really selling the most to people considered seinen though.

Well, it is not that teenagers have lots of money; it is more like shounen series have wider audience who going to guy those shounen series. That's why.

The thing that makes a series really popular is when a lot of other people are reading it and it becomes the "thing to go check out". It needs to branch out from the people that will read any manga that looks interesting to them, or the ones that seek out manga that aren't already popular. Seinen manga can do that as well, but maybe it's true that often adults and older audiences aren't so concerned with that sorta thing. You tend to have less free time when you're an adult. It's the same reason people usually learn languages earlier in life. You tend to stick to what you're already familiar with and just try to develop that. Also the seinen tanks are more expensive, so the total copies sold can be less but equate to the same amount of money. Usually shounen manga have 9 weekly (19-page) chapters and seinen manga usually have 11.

YJ's never really had its own "big 3" it can stick on the cover. Most of the mangas in it aren't well known or that high selling. There're new series in it all the time that people don't really keep much track of.

Not just about free time and money, I think the deepness plot also makes seinen series to be more difficult to become hit. As compared to shounen series, seinen series are more complex and even more difficult to understand to some people. So, the readers who enjoy reading shounen series may going to have difficulties to get used to seinen series.

I, personally, think Young Jump able to find successful series since most of series are kind of having shounen-ish series, like most of recent series are kind of like can be target for the teenagers, like Kakuriyo Monogatari, Mongrel, Hamatora, and Boku Girl.

What does shounen-ish even mean :XD
Gross over generalizations are the best. +1 internet scholars.

I didnt know Oofuri was considered seinen focused, highly doubt its really selling the most to people considered seinen though.
It's serialized in Afternoon, a seinen magazine, so it's seinen. Demographics are just marketing terms. They really are more to designate what type of products are advertised, and where a particular publication should be filed on bookstore shelves. Oofuri was once upon a time serialized in the same magazine as Mushishi. How much does that really describe either title? Seinen isn't a designation describing the audience. Seinen could appeal to a wide variety of different audiences. Uchida Kyoudai readers are not necessarily going to read Terraformers, even though both are seinen. They might, everyone's taste is different. There might be Oofuri fans who genuinely love Kingdom, a very popular manga franchise.

ehhhh, yeah okay Kaiten's right and I totally overthought that age aspect of it (mostly from personal experience, mind: I bought far more comics between 14-18 than I have ever managed since). WSJ makes it far too easy to skew how the industry looks demographically, monster that it is.
