The 'swirl' is drawn for dramatic effect, making it look cool and special.. which it's really not..

He has to show the sport the way it is, not with flourishes. If you haven't seen it in a match, it is unreal.
Slam Dunk became legendary without these flourishes.

It's a shounen manga, it's exaggerating in the way it's being portrayed.

Every shounen manga does that, whether sports, action or romance.

You don't understand putting emphasis on something, exaggerating something for the sense of looking cool.

A normal ball in the air doesn't look interesting at all, which is how it would look like in real life if he did the same exact move.
So he exaggerated the drawing to make it look interesting.

Slam Dunk is so uninteresting the way it was drawn, I wonder why people like it that much.

Really, a sports manga doesn't need to have these flourishes to be interesting. Slam Dunk proves it, Haikyuu!! proves it. When it comes to sports manga, I'm very strict, it has to be as real as possible.

HQ has a lot of effects as well. Do you really think that anyone irl is able to do that oddball quick?

Also, this kind of dunk is made by a few of players of NBA, it is really hard and nothing that a high school player can do, but many people can accept it.

Also, I see it acceptable for a late - high school player. There's prolly some guy out there that can do it. Just not a Japanese one
