One punch man is seeing a digital volume release here in America at least (podcast). Think it will definitely see print release, only two series that didnt were the ones that ended early (Cross Manage, and Takamagahara).

Shueisha is not letting international publishers license OPM until December, at least in Spain and France this happened.

We can assume physical releases will come in 2015.

I dont see why they would do a digital volume 1 this month and then put out the physical volume for it until 2015...Thats like a 10month delay of sorts. (also isnt viz technically a part of shueisha?)

They did it with nisekoi tho.

Viz is co-owned by Shueisha and Shogakukan.

Only podcast hint on the new series was its one of those four, didnt address if it is sports or not (since they were joking on the idea of a separate sports focused shonen jump magazine).

I dont think the One Punch Man situation is the same as nisekoi so we probably cant compare their circumstances and use nisekoi as an example since the chps in english shonen jump didnt start at chp1 (started at 70something) and the digital volumes were essentially trying to quickly catch up, whereas One Punch Man started in the english shonen jump at chp 1.

Looks like that crysalisis Aizen. Taking inspiration from another series is not good.
The irony is, Bleach was originally known to have taken inspiration from YuYu Hakusho.

I think you can compare, they only got the physical rights way later with nisekoi.

In a sense it is, because if digital sells well, then they will do print. Smart business.

Digital only has marginal overhead. Server space and DB storage are a lot less expensive than the cost to print and distribute physical copies.

Pretty much. That isn't to say digital is that much cheaper though.

Viz would benefit more from digital sales through their site, than if they sold a manga through itunes or one of their apps. Idk about amazon/kindle, but iTunes takes around a 30% commission off of ibook sales.

When it comes down to it, it's still smarter for them to go digital first, since it's a little cheaper.
You also have the benefit of logistics.

Sorry, what I'm about to say is boarder-line irrelevant in this thread, but the way you phrased that made me laugh *flashback to Yusuke/Sensui fight vs Ichigo/Ulquiorra fight* :eyeroll Yeah we definitely can't start saying anybody is ripping off Bleach without cracking up lol

I never really understood the reasoning for doing a digital first and then deciding to print later or not for "some" manga really, especially considering that this weekly shonen jump has a certain number of readers and could easily poll people instead for an intent to purchase or not. Not to mention that fact that basing it off of digital sales would mean those buying it are potentially expected to double dip which I dont think most do? And for a title like One Punch Man which is already popular by their standards (they even already promoted it at events and a few other things and they expressed lots have been asking for this manga anyway), its is one which I find difficult or even baffling to believe that it is really in a nebulous state of needing to be gauged for print rights or not...its even more odd in the context of other recent titles getting print and digital.

Oh well for all we know a print thing could pop up on AMZN soon, or they mention it at upcoming cons, or a formal announcement in the magazine says print coming soon...

I can't wait for Illegal Rare. I just found out it's from the same mangaka that did Nurarihyon no Mago.

Viz wants to print big titles that might move at least (around) 2-5k printed units in sales. (Based on numbers from ICV2, that seems like a decent amount)
Promotion at events that cater to a niche crowd does not necessarily warrant immediate print. Your average joe reader won't attend a con. For all they know, the vocal minority is what has been pushing for it. So they're being cautious with OPM. It's smart business. OPM will probably be printed in the future though.

It goes way beyond that.

Vertical also had something to say, but I can't find the blog post at the moment.
Both articles answer a different question, why publishers don't adopt a purely digital format, and why digital price point is the same as physical. Licensing and translation cost is the same for digital and physical formats. Digital reduces overheard considerably, eliminating the need to print physical copies, and ship them to stores. It also takes advantage of buying habits, with eReaders, phones, and tablets becoming the standard format for reading books. The manga industry is late to the game, and not fully equipped to take advantage of the digital market, but seem to be working on building viable platforms. Losing money is a fact of life in all businesses. No matter the industry, certain products are bound to fail. The point is to reduce losses incurred, when a product does fail. By initially posting manga exclusively in digital format, publishers can test the market for a new series, while also reducing overhead if a series fails. That is why Kodansha has been willing to post series, like Uchuu Kyoudai, to Crunchyroll that they have not licensed to print physical copies of. The publishing industry, in general, has not reached the point where they are willing to abandon physical copies. American manga publishers like to release exclusively digital versions of titles in order to gauge public interest.

Rather than post a poll, they can post digital copies of a manga, and see how many page views a manga gets. If a series gets enough views during it's trial period they release a physical copy. It's a better way of determining interest than a poll.

Of course not, because as of right now, Viz and Kodansha USA have both stated that print makes up the largest chunk of their profit.

I wish I were able to see some of the digital sales numbers for Viz though. From a podcast a while back, it didn't seem like it was all that great, along with the amount of subscribers to ESJ.

What annoys me is that Viz increased their manga prices to fund their expansion into Google Play, iBooks, and Kindle. I'm wondering if they plan to increase the cost of individual issues and ESJ subs this year.
Like
$0.99 --> $1.29 for an issue
and $25.99 --> $35.99 for a year

Hi there, I'm new to this forum though I've been lurking this thread for quite a long time (since the start of Soma I guess?) and finally decided to register to join discussions with you! So, to make my post more informative:
Ponjee, a Taiwanese mangaka, published in Shonen Jump of 28/6/2010, a oneshot, Kiba & Kiba, written by Ichiro Inagaki.

And today, we learn that Ponjee will start this year a new series in a Japanese weekly magazine. We don't know yet what the magazine it is and what kind (seinen or shônen) will be.
It was announced that he will be working on the new series together with Kibayashi Shin and Yasaka Takanori. Ponjee will do the art, Kibayashi Shin will work on the story (under the Andou Yuma penname) and Yasaka Takanori will help with it's configuration (構成). It will be called 新宿D×D and serialized in Mangabox from February 27.
(Source)

BTW Ponjea also worked on Chronos Ruler oneshot from Jump NEXT 2012. Also sorry for the offtop but what do you guys think about Mangabox? I think it's quite cool app and I'm reading the new chapters at work on my phone when I have some time. Quite a pity there's no thread to discuss it (there's on at CrunchRoll but I don't think that's a great place to discuss it).
