Of the chapters I read, Kagamigami left an impression of feeling like the author was attempting to enter into the crowded realm of the ghost elimination subgenre of action series. Unfortunately, the chapters offered little in the way of anything new nor displaying a refining of the concepts it was attempting to emulate. However, the lead male character had a great character design so he was one I could get behind, however the other characters were very lacking. The female character for example, could have been inspired from Bleach's Rukia in this genre that has little space for new entries. If he had done this then it could have been very good. Instead, making her a goofy aloof type made it feel odd and kind of backwards. This prevents her from being able to make substantial contributions to the plot which is unfortunate. This would essentially make her a tag along type which is not a very good character to have. I was hoping she could have been like Sakurako [hardcore version] from Psyren [except without the blatant romance that ruins her normal character as the series goes on], which really made that manga a definitive entry for its generation.

It would be the type of manga that I would read but not one I would buy digitally or physically. If the main cast grew by giving him a protege that looks up to him or someone who can also transform like him and is his age, then I think it would really make this a must read series. Also make ghosts and whatnot designs more equivalent to PKMN or Yokai Watch.
A new character appears in ch9 that looks up to him :hee

Why Hinomaru Zumou is not included ?
Because it is a sports manga and not a battle shounen. I think the real question is: WTF Isobe is doing there.

As I said before, lacks context in that scan. The classification they made doesn't make any sense.

Are you saying that someone has to read the entire series before judging its quality? Not really...
he never said that...
13 chapters (even more the beginning ones) aren't representative for 400

It is... Nobody has crystal balls here, so the series always has to be interesting to the reader, the series has to catch our attention each chapter. What about cancelled series? They could become better if they weren't cancelled, right? How could we know? The reader judges the series from what he is reading at that moment, not thinking if it going to become better in the future.

Dropping a series after a single volume has just as much, if not more, to do with taste.

I remember reading Fairy Tail when it debuted, and I dropped it after around the same amount of chapters. Sure we can all make jokes, but that doesn't mean the series isn't enjoyable to people. To seriously insist otherwise is just boorish and snobbish.

People should look at it from a different angle . If we assume that FT is basically a new series with 20+ chapters and I simply judged it by it’s first volume then its really a natural thing to do, the amount of chapters it have right now won’t mean anything if I never liked it before. In the end it is just a matter of taste.

That makes sense. However with canceled series, we'd never know if it would have gotten better. But with series like FT that have not been canceled and have hundreds upon hundreds of chapters, would you still judge it completely by its first dozen or so and not give it a second go?

Generally, second chance is not given, since people drop a series when they don't have any hope in the series anymore. Why would you give a second chance to a series that you judged hopeless before?

Because a future arc fixed all the issues one thought the series had at the beginning?

Meaning of hopeless: impossible to accomplish, solve, resolve, etc.: Balancing my budget is hopeless.
We are supposing that reader is serious and will not drop a series because of minor problems of plot that can be solved easily in the future. Hopeless is hopeless.

But it can also worsen the writing. If people dropped Bleach by soul society arc, I doubt they'll like it now. ( it is just an example, I'm not trying to critizise Bleach)

A series doesn't have to turn for the worst for someone to stop reading it. Or else you would have to follow 90% of every manga you begin reading, since nearly no series is really turning completely hopeless. It's always about entertainment and as mentioned above, taste and to a lesser degree quality.

That aside, by chapter 13 the series hasn't even really even started to fully introduce or develop the first two support characters of the series. So the team argument is bullshit. Whenever FT is mentioned it's only for someone to make a joke by degrading it somehow... and in the WSJ thread even. :/

I would think they would read the final arc to see how it ended.

I have been thinking about Hinomaru Zumou lately, and i think that when the manga get an anime, we can see something really big with the fujoshi audience. Hinomaru has everything that a fujoshi love:
Pretty boys
a group of male characters always together
good relationship between them.

i can see already Hinomaru on the "PASH" front page.

I guess that's true, however for me personally that takes a bit longer than 12 or so chapters. Maybe my tolerance is greater than most, particularly when it comes to action series.

If I get recommended a manga to read, be it WSJ or otherwise, usually the person recommending it tells me when it gets good. If its a new series though, I can't be entirely invested in it until I know its not being cancelled anytime soon.

After that, I think its kind of difficult to pinpoint why we drop series and pick them up. If we're talking about wide-scale disinterest in an ongoing series, like Bleach, then we can talk about the quality of writing etc. But on a personal level, people can drop and re-pick up series all the time. Manga IS entertainment after all. Some people only like certain characters and will endure an otherwise mediocre experience just for them. And for others, maybe lack of money mean they have to choose which series they're more invested in and make a decision not to buy the rest. Not everyone who reads manga wants to be part of a fandom, I think a majority of manga readers are simple lurkers.

I can see an anime studio pick it up and make it more fujoshi friendly too. Marketing can really breathe new life into a manga. I think Kuroko no Basket managed to reach its current popularity due to the anime as well.

I agree, everybody should be and is their own critic. Sometimes I don't like to be Over-critical with a manga or anime, it all comes down to whether or not I enjoy it. If I find it entertaining then that's all I want. When it ceases to be entertaining to me, I drop it. There are certain manga I love reading but I don't want to be a part of the fandom, because sometimes a fandom can ruin your personal enjoyment of a series.

Even though the Fairy Tail subject is getting tiring, I use it as my example. I dropped FT in the middle of the Edolas arc about 170 chapters in, not because of it's quality or it not being my taste. I dropped it because it wasn't entertaining me anymore, and maybe if I care I might pick it up again in the future. I also dropped Bleach after the Soul Society arc, but I picked it up again because I was lurking around it and heard it was on it's final arc. I care at least enough to see how it ends.

Well, it depends on the manga, but tolerance has a role here indeed and some other factors. Well, it was his choice, I don't think that we should say that it was wrong...
