Don't forget that One Piece volumes sells 2.5 times more than a Naruto volume. Kishimoto to reach it will need: Old Fanbase (OF) + New Fanbase with OF size + New Fanbase with half OF size.

Hoping that it reaches Shingeki no Kyojin with its 2 Million copies per volume is already an enormous task(800k more than OF).
My point was that if ANYONE had a chance, it would be Kishimoto with this new series.

The only series that could challenge One Piece in sales is Hunter X Hunter if Togashi actually started drawing on a normal schedule again.

Also, no disrespect to Naruto's greatness because I really do appreciate the sheer quality it had in the beginning, but I worry that in the last few years Kishimoto lost his touch. Naruto would not have a fraction of its current success if it was written like that from the beginning.

It's true though that we've never had a serious second series by someone who is this incrediblt successful, so it'll be interesting to see how far he can go.

Here is the top 13 (acording to wikipedia):

1 - One Piece (320 m)
2 - Dragon Ball (230 m)
3 - Naruto (205 m)
4 - Golgo 13 (200 m)
5 - Black Jack (176 m)
6 - Kochikame (156 m)
7 - Detective Conan (140 m)
8 - Oishinbo (130 m)
9 - Slam Dunk (120 m)
10 - Astro Boy (100 m)
11 - Doraemon (100 m)
12 - Hokuto no Ken (100 m)
13 - Touch (100 m)

All of them are (were) weekly.
So If Kishi doesn't want to do weekly anymore, I found it quite hard for it surpass Naruto.

That list is wrong. This is correct list.

What is that list's source? According to Wikipedia's source (Toei Animation's website), DB sold at least 230 million by 2013. If they're lying, I'd like to know what source disagrees with them.

I don't know why people say that Hunter x Hunter could challenge One Piece in sales. Togashi was already a super popular author when he started Hunter x Hunter and not always he had that many breaks. Given all this the series sold always behind One Piece and also behind someone else series(The same thing in the anime).

Hunter x Hunter peaked in 1st print in 1.6 Million copies(One Piece before the War boost peaked at 2.63 Million). Why is people hoping that it would get another boost? And that this boost would be anything close to 4.05 Million?
Is rare the situation where such a thing happens. Just because it happened to One Piece, it doesn't mean it would happen to Hunter x Hunter too.

- Akira Toriyama?
- Rumiko takahashi?
- Adachi?
- Inoue Takehiko?
- Mitsuru Adachi?
- Osamu Tezuka?

Black Jack 176 Million are wrong is just 45 Million, the source of that info already rectified it. Wikipedia just doesn't change it.

Golgo 13 isn't weekly! The magazine it runs on is Bi-Weekly, but it runs Monthly and sometimes Bi-Monthly.
Doraemon ran in various Magazines for kids(that I don't believe being weekly), and after that got into Corocoro Comic that is Monthly.

Dragon Ball 230 Million worldwide is correct, the problem is Black Jack 176 Million.

Both lists are wrong. This year's shueisha media guide didn't contain the sales figures so we can't know for sure. Some sale figures are including different years
Mangazenkan updates given the official print numbers that appear in the news(any type of news), so is not dependent of Shueisha Media Guide.

The figures of series can include different years, but what matters is the last thing known for each series.

I thought it just had an update recently
Don't recall Bleach's global sales being revealed. Last I heard was Bleach selling over 1.2million in US back in 2007/08

HxH had (recent) volumes where it sold more than Naruto despite being in a totally unusual schedule and having extremely low quality drawings in the weekly release. We have no way of knowing what heights it could reach if it was released normally. HxH got breaks and shitty releases way too early for it to truly compete with a series that is so much longer. In my opinion if you let HxH naturally release for a few years and build up to the size of OP, it would give it serious competition.

By the way, I meant this popular in terms of making a long-running mainstream shonen, meaning Toriyama (who was popular with Dr Slump but significantly less than something like Naruto) or Tezuka who had like a gazillion series and also lived in a different time is irrelevant.

Takehiko Inoue is a good point, so I'll grant you that.

I would like to know from where and how is obtained the information sales outside of Japan, especially of Dragon Ball, because for example, here in Spain, it was published first in comic-book format. That is to say:

More of 250 issues in comic-book format, with 50k buyers, equals more than 12.5 millions copies sold, BUT it's cheating, 42 volumes with these 50k buyers equals less of 2.5 millions copies sold. So, how counting?

No it didn't!

2013
*16 1,205,558 NARUTO 63
*17 1,193,383 HUNTER×HUNTER 31

2012
**5 1,281,309 NARUTO 61
*10 1,090,309 HUNTER×HUNTER 30

2011
**5 1,229,170 NARUTO 54
*12 1,043,782 HUNTER×HUNTER 29

2010
*10 1,211,849 Naruto vol.49
*19 *,941,550 Hunter x Hunter vol.27

Also don't forget that in 2011 HxH got a new anime adaptation and so boosting its sales!

HxH got 8 years without "breaks and shitty releases", that is more time than most series get of release. So in reality it really competed with One Piece for a long time. It was even the 2nd most popular series in the Magazine for some time, and appearing in the group cover next to One Piece.
Also note that HxH anime started airing 6 days earlier to the start of One Piece anime.

There is really no big excuse for the difference between HxH and One Piece.

Note: One Piece entered Skypiea, where it got a print of 2.63 Million copies, breaking the record of Slam Dunk of 2.50 Million, in 2002(manga) and 2003 anime. HxH started getting irregular hiatus in 2006(though 2004 also was a bad year).

I'm confused? Are you saying that Slam Dunk is a long-running mainstream shonen, but Dr. Slump isn't? Because Slam Dunk ran for 6 years and got an anime for 2.5 years. While Dr. Slump ran for 5 years and got an anime for also 5 years.

Dr. Slump was more popular than Naruto without a doubt! This is only not true if you're talking outside of Japan, where Dr. Slump didn't even got coverage(or got really little of it).
Dr. Slump not only has the best TV rating of WSJ manga, 22.8%. But also got the record in 1st print number, for every manga, at the time: 2.2 Million copies. Naruto in its heyday had TV ratings of 8%(One Piece at the same time was doing 13.8%) and its best 1st print number is 1.62 Million copies.

In japan the only thing that Naruto is better than Dr. Slump is that is way longer than it, like 3 times longer.

I don't know how they count, but the information was given by Toei and Shueisha.

I would assume that they only count the Tankobon, the volumes in a similar format to those in Japan.
For example in Japan One Piece had special edition called Log Books, that were basically a Magazine like Weekly Shonen Jump, but with only One Piece chapters, and that wasn't counted in the "normal" One Piece sales.

The problem is that they, I assume, obtain sales information from licensees publishers, and these are great cheaters making up data here.

This whole sale thing must not be taken too seriously.
They don't have control over the world sales because of the licensing thing and we all know that publishers like to lie about sales.

We just know that Naruto, One Piece, Dragon Ball, Conan, etc... sells a lot and are in the top 10 in all lists, albeit in diferent positions.
We also know that One Piece won a Guiness record recently so it's acknowledged that it's the most published comic book in the world.

Also, one of the reasons that Golgo and Kochikame are in the list is because of longevity since the former is from 69 and the later from 76.

Anyway I said that is hard for the next Kishi work surpass Naruto, but I've not said that's impossible.
Who knows...
He can pretty much pulls the new One Piece out of his hat.
If this happen I would be happy.
