I thought the shadows moria had under his grasp were released when he passed out. Not much of a plot hole there...
Yeah, they did. But ONLY because he took every shadow he had inside himself (Shadow's Asgard). Moriah stated him passing out would do nothing to the shadows within his Zombies.

So... doesn't that mean there isn't a plot hole?

There is another one, DD goes to the Marineford war and Luffy was there and used CoC ,I suppose the whole world saw it including Trebol since his captain was there he might have watched all of it, so why the heck did he look surprised with Luffy using CoC (in the clash with DD) since he already saw him using it at the war?

That's not actually a plot hole. Trebol and Co may or may not have watched the battle as that was never covered and you have to remember that the broadcast was cut off for a period of time.

there was an episode in the anime where zorro was accidentally drawn twice in the same scene. Not a plot hole, but worth laughing about (will post pic later)

Conqueror's Haki is "invisible" and would not be visible through a screen. That said, his surprise was more due to Luffy and Doflamingo mighty.

Do you remember even Jinbei who saw him use it was surprised he could control it in Fishman Island? CoC is supposedly supposed to take more than a couple of years to learn to control which is why Joker was surprised he could actually make use of it.

Why didn't shanks use haki when he saved luffy in the sea and ended up losing his arm ,he could have easily used it and he wouldn't have lost his arm

Maybe he couldn't control it at that time like he can now?
Or it was like he said, he made a bet on Luffy. Shanks saved him by losing his left arm and Luffy is always thankful for that, it's like a reminder for him why he has to become strong enough to be the next Pirate King, otherwise Shanks would have lost his arm practically for nothing.

I've thought of that at times too. If shanks had used haki, he would still have his arm. However, I disagree that he might not have been able to control it or that he literally decided to bet his arm on Luffy. He seemed pretty comfortable with using CoC afterwards to scare it off. I believe it was a situation where he simply jumped in to save Luffy because the situation required it. Imo, the bigger question would be why he didn't use CoA on his arm to either attack or defend. One might make the case that using CoC may require some level of concentration or so but CoA should have been a lot easier to use, especially since Shanks decided to jump in.

I thought why Shanks used CoC after his arm was bitten off was maybe similar to Luffy when he saved Ace or protected Mr. 2 from the wolves, it was used unconsciously. If Shanks was able to freely use CoC at that time then he could have used it even before that against the bandits who threatend Luffy, but he didn't.

We should also not forgett that Luffy showed signs of CoC early in his life and thanks to that was trained by a master (Rayleigh). Maybe Shanks didn't show any signs of CoC before he separated his ways with everyone else from his old crew and had to train and learn how to use CoC alone.

Well, when it comes to inexperienced users, we see them show CoC when they panic or so. When shanks turned to the monster, he showed the calm angry face that experienced CoC users show. Also, if he wasn't experienced with it, the time he would have shown it was actually when the sea creature was about to attack Luffy not after he has saved Luffy. This is definitely not the face of someone who doesn't know what he's doing

It's useless to talk about stuff like this when there's a huge chance Oda didn't think about Haki or what not at that point, don't you think ?

Well Shanks is clearly using Haki there so Oda already had the idea. Perhaps he hadn't thought of CoA then though

Not really, we've seen Luffy & Zoro scaring a shitload of creatures without using Haki

Without that foaming + fainting, we can't really tell if COC was being used or not at that instance... I really believe Oda didn't think about it during that moment

There's many instances I can think of which are similar to what Shanks did here

  1. Luffy & Zoro scaring that sea cat during Alabasta arc
  2. Vergo scaring that dragon during PH arc
  3. Luffy scaring the animals on the island where he trained when Hancock and the rest came (he didn't use COC)
  4. Luffy again in FI when the three Fishmen thugs attacked him and brought with them that small sea creature
  5. Hodi scaring the Sea Kings after he overdosed on ES pills

When know animals can suffer from the same effects as people if they were hit with COC, best example is Motobaro when they met Duval

Pretty sure all of those examples happened because the creature in question already had prior experience with those people and thus were actually afraid of them based on that. We're talking amount a creature biting off Shanks arm and about to attack again before he tells it to back off. There are really no grounds for it to behave that way considering the situation.

No
I don't think the dragon had any experience with Vergo considering how docile it was till the drugs wore off
Sea Cat had no experience with Luffy/Zoro
Hodi yeah sure they had experience with him, same with the animals on Luffy's island
That small sea king had no experience with Luffy when it happened in FI

Well I don't remember those scenes particularly well but like I said, there's no other reason for the creature to back off moments after buying shanks arm and prepping to attack him again.

This is basically what I think. That could have easily just been regular ol' "Killing Intent", which has been used a couple times in the early part of the series. I don't think Oda had haki in mind when writing the first chapter, and if he did, I doubt the idea was developed much. Definitely not to the point where it is now. He did a grand job of folding into the mythos though.

Personally, I think Luffy breaking out of Doffy's Parasite was a bit of a plot hole. What do you peeps think?
