i'm not asking for one piece, naruto or knb numbers

beelzebub numbers would've been fine in my eyes, it didn't even reach that

It didn't last as long either, but that doesn't mean it was a failure. Obviously a ton of people enjoyed it, despite it not being a giant hit. I don't really know what that says about Iwashiro's future with Shueisha though, which was the original topic.

It didn't last as long because people weren't enjoying it. In the majorities eyes' Pysren was bad. If the majority liked it, then it would have continued and eventually turned out an anime, but it didn't. Quality is in the eye of the beholder. Anyone can like anything.

Majority of who? :XD Even if we just go off of people who turn in the cards, not voting for it doesn't mean the series was BAD. But even if we use that logic, it still doesn't mean the series was a FAILURE either. Plenty of "bad" series are immensely successful.

You're completely missing my point. It doesn't matter if YOU think the series is good. If the MAJORITY doesn't like/vote for it, then that series is bad.

As Sasaki in Bakuman once said "Manga just needs to be good. If it's good, it will get serialized" or in this case continue being serialized. However, Pysren was cancelled. Therefore, Pysren is "bad."

The only exception to the "if it's not voted for, it's bad" are manga in a digital publication like Jump+. If no one reads it then it can't be judged. lol

Just...No. :oh

Break out of that hivemind nonsense. "Good" or "Bad" isn't limited to whether people vote for it on a weekly basis...come on now.

Just think of a popular series that you don't enjoy or maybe even dislike. Are you going to say that the opposite applies just because it's popular? Of course not. No one in their right mind would.

--------

And this has gone woefully offtopic anyway. This convo was about whether a 16 volume series should be considered a failure or not. Whether it was "good" or "bad" is something separate. Though it's less common in Jump, many immensely popular series aren't 50 volume long behemoths. Whether it was cancelled or not is inconsequential when the manga is allowed to continue for volumes and volumes and sell decently. Shaman King was "cancelled"...who considers it a failure? Anyone? Same with Beelzebub.

Proving something does not prove the converse. And that's with the most liberal definition of the word "prove" possible, given the source here is Bakuman.
Also, reading something on manga websites is voting for it. They can see how many people click on new chapters, i.e. care enough to keep reading a series.

I don't even know what to say. I don't feel like I'm getting my message across.

Let me rephrase. Personally, I don't think Pysren is bad. It's pretty mediocre, but not terrible. What I guess I'm trying to say is that since Pysren never received an anime and that it was also cancelled, in Jump's eye, it was a failure.

I guess I should have used the word failure instead of bad as bad was obviously not communicating my idea appropriately.

jagman1x3 I said "if no one reads it, it can't be judged" and by judged I mean popularity/quality. I wasn't referring to voting. I was simply taking a jab at Jump+.

But websites views can be easily manipulated, and why care for website views in countries where people cant buy the digital or print version of that manga.

Why Souma's boost was not as big as Haikyuu's? I mean, both were selling about the same amount before the adaptations.

Well, Psyren was cancelled, did not get an anime even though it released 16 volumes and though it sold decently for some time, I'd call it a failure (from a franchise point of view and not story-wise). Nura and Beelzebub lasted just a year or a bit more but both got anime adaptations and were considerably more well known.

Why Souma's boost was not as big as Haikyuu's? I mean, both were selling about the same amount before the adaptations.
I'd say a sports anime is easier to like and get into than a cooking anime. Soma is still really popular but did anyone honestly think it would reach HQ!! and KnB levels? It's an unorthodox battle manga like Bakuman was and the reach it has would be limited.

By some logic that means Bleach, Beelzebub, Reborn, Nurarihyon (for not being continued) are some sort of failures, as their anime were cancelled. Rookies didn’t receive anime, guess it’s a failure too. Aside from that most Jump series haven’t received anime, guess that means Jump's business it to produce failures? And in "half" the occasions of those that receive an anime, it gets cancelled XD

One series simply don’t run for 3 years in Jump, to end up being called failure by some “all-knowing” internet "experts". If it’s a failure, Jump cancels it quick, it doesn’t wait 3 years. Obviously it wasn’t a failure (receiving anime is no merit for being failure or not) as it was beneficial for them to leave it for 3 years. It doesn’t need to be their top series either to be beneficial.

And for those who say if people aren’t voting for it, it’s a bad/failure. How many people vote? You don’t know… You used Bakuman, if I remember correctly in Bakuman the first place was something between 500-800 votes (overall less than 10k voters)? Hell lots of series character popular poll get like 5-15k votes at best. How many people buy Psyren? More than those numbers. How many copies Jump prints and sell? 2.8 million or something? Most people are not only not voting for Psyren, they aren’t voting at all. And since they are also limited to vote for 3 series, if it’s your 4th or 5th favourite series, then you obviously can’t vote for it, unless you decide to not vote for another.

Psyren lasted for exactly 3 years (01/2008 - 52/2010), so I don't think it's a failure as Psyren manage to survive that long in Jump.

it depends on you definition of failure i guess

it didn't end naturally, it got axed because psyren always ranked badly near the bottom with SWOT & Metalluca & its sales were terrible for a Jump manga, iirc it always sold somewhere between 60k & 80k
Please, if it based on that logic, Hinomaru Zumou should be cancelled by now. :3c

Rookies had a good sell but do not have an anime. Same goes with Jaguar that lasted for 10 years. How about Mr. Fullswing? Hatsukoi Limited which was cancelled after 32 chapters got an anime, how should we classify it? A failure? A success?

----

Is it a 'thing' at Jump to terminate an author contract after 3 tries? Because Yasuhiro Kano still with them right doing Kiss x Death after 3 unsuccessful attempt in Jump (Pretty Face, Mx0, Kagami no Kuni).

Can't we just agree that Psyren was neither a total success nor a total failure?

The whole discussion so far has just showed that each one has their own standards for what should be considered successful or not and, in the end, we don't know Shueisha's standards, which are the only ones that really matter after all. Psyren belongs to an intermediate category of titles, just like Muhyo to Rouji, Mx0, and others, and the way we label them (failures, small successes, or whatever) won't really change anything.

Personally, I would call something a "success" when it spawns a media franchise of any sort. This is a business after all. Nura spawned anime, games. Same with Beelzebub and Reborn. Rookies spawned a TV drama and a movie. Psyren had nothing but the manga. In my books, I wouldn't call it a success.

Meh spyair got pretty samey oldey as of late. On that cd Trust your Anthem is far better imo. Haikyuu op eds are kind of its weak point (same for hinatas voice).

I dont see how its hard for food wars to have less popularity on manga boost than Haikyuu. Its more accessible and funner to get behind. Food war cooking details are a drag and the writing at times is too derivative or just plain bad.

Who wants to take bets on the ending order of the series that seem to be concluding soon?
I'd say.
AssClass first, probably in Jan or Feb, with Gintama ending in the next issue after.
Then Nisekoi, a few months after.
Toward the end of the year I think we'll see both Toriko and Bleach end.

I guess AssClass will end in March, to make it fit with the goal of the manga to assassinate Koro-Sensei before the end of March.
Not sure about Gintama, i don't read it.
Nisekoi could end at around the same time like AssClass, probably a bit earlier. Now that the Marika Arc is over there are only 2 girls left and it seems like the final decision is getting very close.
I think Toriko is also a candidate that won't be there for far too long. The story is really rushing with everything and i could see it all getting wrapped up in less than 20 chapters.
Bleach could continue for years. Given how every single fight is getting enough chapters for at least 1 volume there are still enough fights left for another 10+ volumes.

I think AssClass will end in the spring...
Nisekoi in the summer, if the rankings stay decent...
Gintama in late 2016/ early 2017....
Bleach around the same time as Gintama, but with Kubo who can say.....
Don't think Toriko will end anytime soon unless the rankings take a sudden huge dip like the sales....
