I would disagree on WT lacking real threats, at least outside of the "Rank War"-tournaments.So it is only possible to have fun with comedy manga? I sincerely disagree that WT has this "serious" tone you talk about. Most of the time what worries those kids is just rising the rankings. And that's the problem. WT lacks real threat.
The threats in the series feel way more real to me than in most mangas of the genre, because the antagonists are well written and come of as smart&competent. Also, because fights usually aren't deadly, the end-result of them is much more open than in series with the usual "potentially deadly but not really"-combat, which results in actual tension towards the potential results of the fight. Which drives home the point that battles aren't primarily about killing&survival for their own sake but about achieving or preventing objectives.
As for the humor: WT is more subtle in that regard and needs more immersion into the characters compared to the over-the-top slapstick of many other series, but at times it's hilarious. But of course, that's up to personal taste.
