As far as I'm concerned, Hisoka's resurrection was fan pleasing at its worst. He was certainly dead in my opinion because we're told his Nen became stronger. I don't think one can pretend to die and trick their own Nen into be stronger. I'm appalled by the way this played out.

From what I can tell based on the chapter and the people defending it, death in HXH is a recoverable state, as in if you're dead, and you've a power strong enough, that can be removed. To me, dead is dead. Pitou said she cannot heal someone (Kite) who is dead because their soul isn't around any longer. That implies to recover from death requires the ability to manipulate at the level of the soul which is most definitely not what Hisoka did.

Note that HXH does believe in the concept of the soul. For example, even experienced users thought that GI was a device that sucked your soul into the machine, and Shalnark suspected it was not because that seems like the condition is way too loose for dealing with someone's soul. This implies that people in HXH have thought about what kind of power you'd need to be able to manipulate a soul. So, soul exists as a concept and can be manipulated at some level, but there's nothing Hisoka did that'd suggest he can manipulate his own soul.

Pitou's ability can preserve a body indefinitely to the point that Gon didn't know Kite actually died. She cannot bring back the dead because the soul is missing, and I don't see how your soul can be around when you're actually 'dead', because otherwise there isn't even a point of reference of when death is permanent when you're dealing with someone with Pitou's ability. Hisoka aura was empowered by death, so that means he has passed the point where just preserving the body is no longer enough. To save himself, his ability needs to be able to preserve his soul.

What I'm interested in now is, will Hisoka ever be killed or will Togashi avoid this scenario as it'd definitely be controversial yet again? It'd seem the only way to kill off Hisoka is to completely disintegrate his body.

At this point it's a matter of personal preferences and tastes regarding a story and a fictional universe.
We've passed the point where one side could convince the other of the validity of his position, well it's more right to say that nobody is right or wrong in his perception of this particular choice by togashi.
But we have to admit 2 things in my opinion, two facts that no one can dispute.

1) It was a deliberate choice by togashi to put hisoka in this corner and resolve the impossible situation like he did.
That's why i don't agree with people who say that it's an easy way out. Some people may find it as being a poor choice but it would be false to say that it was not deliberately set in motion and explained willingly by the author. Togashi chose to show us a one sided fight where hisoka put himself in an impossible situation. Togashi chose to kill hisoka by suffocation and to spare his vital organs.....
It remains me of the development of jon snow character in game of thrones for those who know the show. The show runners and possibly the author of the books, they chose to bring back back the character from the dead , tyrion or arya were seriously injured at one point or another but they make it so that they would stay alive.
Togashi could have given a fate similar with killua's one when he was rescued by ikalgo, a near death , interrupted by the intervention of the emergency or a third party for example. That would have been easier. So it was a choice from a storytelling perspective.

2) This doesn't contradict the rules and the previous instances used in the story.
-Palm committed suicide.......and was brought back. She stabbed her heart willing to sacrifice herself in order to save the infiltration mission. So this type of surgery , even beyond were possible in hxh universe.
And people know it, knov breakdown has been explained by the fact that he knew what pouf and pitou were able to do, a fate worse than death......he still can't do his job properly to this day.
And that was the big difference with kaito original body, his head was severed , pito was joggling with it, and created her hatsu after the fight in order to patch his body in one piece. An ability that was more and more efficient after each use. So her first use of it was the worst without a doubt.
Palm did come back after her death, because she was treated mere moments after her "clinical" death.
In real life people can be reanimated after their heart cease to beat , that's the whole point of the cpr, or things like that. People are saved after drowning with massage if it's done quickly. This notion is exacerbated in a shounen.
Pito did follow gon to peijing, and only after seeing kaito did she tell him that it was too late, which indicates that it was possible or that it could be plausible , if not the purpose of gon mission and goals during the invasion would have been pointless......And nobody had nothing to say to him regarding his plan to bring back kaito, so in the manga this kind of thing are possible and everybody knows it (don freec has more than 300 years, zobae decease, etc, etc)
And who were the person, killua (so togashi) said had an aura which had similarities whith pitou' s aura: hisoka and illumi. They're sinister persons.
So i do think that someone need to have a specific mindset to use "necromancy" like power.
A guy like leolio or gon, straight, pure who fight and act with reckless abandon , without enjoying it or prepared to do anything to stay alive under any circumstances could not replicate such a feat in my opinion.

That's why i think people underestimate hisoka talent and role in the story. After showing us the extent of kururo mastery of nen , improvement and hatsu, and comprehension of human psyche. He showed us the extent of hisoka talents.
The guy is sick and deadly. He was almost calm thinking about his own death and tried something on the spot without any assurance it would work (in character, as a lector we knew obviously), which was a success firstly or only thanks to luck (cause of death, body well conserved ). Even a psycho like genthru lost his composure facing gon rock attack, the same could be said with morel, or knukkle. Hisoka was almost unfazed knowing that he had every chances to die (let's faec it he should have died under these circumstances normally)
That's the most important aspect, we've seen talented and strong hunters or nen users in front of what they believed was an imminent death (kastro, knukkle, genthru, uvo): Either they renounced , accepted it or panicked.
Some psycho are almost unfazed in front of that eventuality:
Pito came back, but wasn't fortunate to have an head anymore. She was relieved that she was the one being obliterated and not her king.
Illumi made an offer to killua delighted to "survive" in the mind and heart of his tormented sibling.
These guys , these type of characters are crazy. Pariston is one of those ill person, which explain gin comments , stating that he needs to break him psychologically and can not simply punch him in the face, the guy would just laugh at him. They're the one who fits the idea of curse the most. They haunt you literally.
The properties of his hatsu were compatible with the orders moreover. Toagshi made him evolve by letting him run towards his own demise , fail, escape it by luck and skills. But he's not the same and paid an heavy price which he hadn't even had to if not because of his blodlust and arrogance. The guy lost several limbs and looks like a zombie.....
Hisoka looks less and less like a normal human being. And togashi did it on purpose, whether we like it or not.

And let's not like there is no counter measure, the whole concept on nen exorcism serve this purpose, whether the nen user "survive" (honestly hisoka does not look good, he used his hatsu to mask it but he took some damages, and healing is not that easy in hxh, specially for a lonely killer like him ) or let his aura do the dirty work after his death. Kururo and the troupe were careless , but they can eliminate hisoka. Whether by destroying completely his body even after his supposed death like gon did to pito, and/or by making sure that any remnants traces of aura would be wiped out.
It would have been very easy for the troupe to mutilate him, machi was willing to do the exact opposite. Had his nen remained , exorcist are there for this.

That wasn't suffocation, he got blown up and died. He knew he was going to die because he was falling into a mass of suicide bombers. Not because he was going to suffocate. Hisoka knew he was going to die not because he expected suffocation, that's not what he was avoiding by evading the masses, he was evading being blown like his fingers.

Unlike GOT, it's not full of limitations like HxH. HxH has established rules, GOT doesn't, so we can't put such limitations and then claim them to be absurd or contrived. Jon Snow's revival was probably expected and not something to rule out, Hisoka's was.

I'm pretty certain that as Hisoka was falling into his demise before introduced to the last chapter, some where expecting he still had a trick up his sleeve, no one expected he'd actually die because death simply means the character ceases to play any further roles from that point on-ward.

Well, the chapter actually says hisoka suffocated... With that in mind it is entirely possible hisoka was able to protect himself with his nen even if he took a fair bit of damage. The weirdest part is that hisoka seems to have stopped breathing for hours. Shouldn't his brain have simply rotten away in that time? He did not set his nen to protect him from necrosis....

I don't think we're supposed to take it as if it was like in real life, i mean hisoka was chewing his arm against kastro and hiding cards and stuff in it like it was nothing.
Seeing how surgeon operate in reality i don't think we were supposed to be wondering about infections and things of that nature.

It was not for several hours. Not much time had passed and the medics were seen carrying the injured/dead and discussing with the commentator. Machi, Shal and Korutopi were most likely in the crowd too so I don't think they'd wait for hours to check his body.

To be honest I would have thought several hours would have been a conservative estimate. Even if shalnark and kurotopi were close by, they would have had to find hisoka among the bodies and debris.... Even shalnark made the point that hisoka was burried before he was found. And they had the time to even figure out his cause of death. Even chrollo did not seem to be close to where hisoka was.

After my initially unfavourable reaction about this twist, i quite began to like it.

First of all:
What I'm interested in now is, will Hisoka ever be killed or will Togashi avoid this scenario as it'd definitely be controversial yet again? It'd seem the only way to kill off Hisoka is to completely disintegrate his body.
I dont think togashi would shy away from killing him if he thinks that is best for the manga.
It is quite possible that Hisoka dies on the whale and togashi used this fight as a set up to reintegrate the spiders and hisoka into the manga.
After all, many people were upset that the fight had no set up even if one of the fan favourites was going to die (i would count chrollo as a fanvourite, too).

Hisoka can be killed in many different ways. Simply cutting off his head is one of them, another is severe internal damage or braindamage (shot into the head by frankling would do the trick).
All in all, if he is going to die, himm relentlessly trying to kill all the spiders and going full psycho seems more appropriate than a sudden deathmatch.

Shalnark said Hisoka suffocated. We do not know how he came to that conclusion and how good shalnark actually was at medical things and whether he had medical equipment at hand.
It might simply be that shalnark noticed that hisoka's body is decently intact and concluded it must have been suffocating.
He then checked that there is no heartbeat and no breathing since a longer period of time and thus was pretty sure hisoka was dead.

It might very well be that hisoka simply depleted his nen reserves and his body went into standby (after all, wing said that you can even die if you exhaust your nen) with brainwaves in fact being still existant until machi examined him but his heart stopping at some point (which does not necessarily have to be right at the explosion, it could very well be that his lungs and heart still worked somewhat until the point he was taken out of the pile).

If we make those assumptions, it is quite possible that the real time his brain was without oxygen amounted closer to about 15 minutes, a number which is a little stress but possible even in the real world.
After that amount of time, his brain was starting to get damaged and he was actually at the verge of death in so far that his brainwaves died down, but then his nen kickstarted his body again by his bungee gum getting stronger even tho his nen was depleted at this point and giving his body a cpr.

Now, i made a lot of assumptions for that one making the twist still rather offbeat, but i think that actually adds to its value.
It was not a sure bet, it is nothing hisoka can do all the time.
If even one of those factors i mentioned hadnt worked out, hisoka would be dead.
If he was still under the pile of bodies while his cpr started? Dead, no air.
The explosion might have destroyed internal organs --> dead.
The explosion destroys his hands so he cannot cpr himself? Dead.
Instead of being all honorable and compassionate, the spiders simply make sure and cut off his head or machi instantly delivers a killing blow when she notices nen actinivity? Dead.

It was a magic trick which had a very low chance of working, because hisoka wasnt even sure whether he could pull off the 'nen getting stronger' thing to begin with.
It is not a skill he can simply do again and which renders him more durable or anything, expsecially because the spiders will make VERRRYY sure he is completely destroyed the next time.It was kind of a slip on their part in the first place that they didnt, explained only because some of them still felt somewhat compassionate or at least apathetic towards hisoka, not caring at this point whether he is dead or not.
Chrollo just wanted to KNOW, he didnt give the order to destroy his corpse or anything like that.
Machi even wanted to stich hisoka back together. The might have acted otherwise if hisoka was kurapika, i am pretty sure in that case they would have been less careless.

That's not the point, the point is death should simply be death.

Shalnark confirmed he was dead, and Machi confirmed his Nen got stronger which is only possible after death.

If this can't kill Hisoka, it means he's somewhat limited to methods of killing which wasn't established, therefore a cop-out to keep a supposed to be dead character alive.

Togashi just shouldn't have killed him in the first place.

He was dead, but he cpred himself. It is a usage of his nen.
The only reason why he couldnt cpr himself usually was because after he dies, his nen is non working anymore, thus he needed to rely on it getting stronger after death.

He kickstarted himself by that at the moment he would have actually died.
I see no logical fallacy in that.
I also doubt togashi shies away from killing him.
The fight would have been much worse in my opinion if chrollo was too incompetent to know what a death blow looks like or some other force at intervened or hisoka ran away.
Togashi wanted to make clear chrollo was the winner of that fight, even to the death, while still wanting to use hisoka later.

There is a logical fallacy in it.

Bungee Gum doesn't animate itself, it requires the input of Hisoka first and foremost. If his Bungee Gum is going to pull something, he needs to pull his finger first in order for Bungee to carry out the function.

The only aspect of Bungee gum that doesn't require input from the user is being sticky, that's a natural property.

What function did Bungee gum have on his heart? It didn't help him pump it or glue his hands to his heart, his hand was already n place. So, where exactly Bungee gum came into play is non-existent as far as portrayal goes.

Bungee Gum has no ability to squeeze or contract, therefore, what we saw was simply his re-animation by Nen, not his Bungee Gum. Hisoka's hand was simply on his heart at the moment of death, so he really just pumped his own heart which anyone could do.

If his Nen got strong enough to carry-out new functions, how did his Nen pump his lungs, but need his hands on his heart? It'd have been more convincing a new functionality had been born if his hand wasn't already grabbing his heart to begin with, and showing his heart being pumped purely by Nen, so there's even conflict when trying to attribute this resuscitation to his Bungee gum.

Doesn't even matter if Chrollo was incompetent to know what a death blow looked like, Shalnark confirmed him dead, and I don't think Shalnark is incompetent to the point he can't recognize a dead being, and so did Machi.

This was a cop-out, why is he the first person we've seen resuscitate themselves from dead, it's not like his will to live is the greatest. Where has it ever stated that one can revive themselves on dead? How many people do we know have died before and resurrected? Only Hisoka. It's a cop-out because Togashi had to do something unprecedented for this particular character to remain alive.

Bungee gum does not need his fingers. He can even use it with his feet. It contracts and expands at will, even if his limbs are still.
Bungee gum was used so that his hands gave him cpr and his gum-like nen also contract and expanded arround his lung so it would come in motion.
And bungee gum always had the ability to squeeze or contract.
He clearly mentioned that it was important that his nen had the gumattribute to pull that off.

Hisoka was dead for all the usual signs of death, and shalnark had no medical equipment with him like a measurement for brainwaves.

It is not a cop out because togashi could have let this end in any other way.
it is clearly a deliberate choice because togashi wanted it to happen that way.
If, at any point, togashi thought to himself: 'Oh no, i have written myself into a corner with this, i dont want to let hisoka die' then he just wouldnt. it was only 5 chapters with no set up and he could have done a lot of stuff offscreen, like hisoka killing spiders because he was sick of waiting.
He didnt, he wanted this, exactly this. It is irrelevant whether hisoka is a fanfavourite here.
It is like saying it was a cop out for gon to heal his hand with archangels breath just because those greed island cards were newly introduced back then and stressed our understanding of nen.
It is only a cop out when it is clear the author wrote himself into a corner and didnt want to pull through with what he did, but this is not the case here.

The point alone that it is ONLY hisoka who did that shows us that togashi wanted to make a point at how apt with nen and crazy hisoka is.
It is also 'only gon' who transformed it his super form.
And 'only ging' who can just copy other people's hatsu for the lulz without it even being his own hatsu.

Boundaries of nen were not stressed in any way here. if anything, it were boundaries of the human body in the hunterverse, and even that can be explained away in my opinion.

You're putting the cart before the horse.

Unless Hisoka moves his limbs, his Bungee Gum does nothing other than be sticky.

If he doesn't pull, it won't pull.

Leg, arm, feet, it doesn't matter, he has to move before his Bungee Gum has any purpose.

It's not animated unless Hisoka himself is animated.

So, how did he move his hands on his heart? It's not like he used his other hand to manipulate this hand.

In fact, without limbs, he can't make use of Bungee gum intricately. Once his fingers were blown off, he had to make use of his feet.

What you're suggesting requires Bungee gum being able to animate itself, and that's simply not possible as far as I know.

Provide a panel where Hisoka's Bungee gum has animated itself? because there's no way to massage his heart without moving his limbs first, and his gum can't manipulate his hands or heart.

These are excuses. Initially it's pathetic to not be able to tell a character is dead, now medical equipment is a requirement to call someone dead? Sorry, excuses you're making. And this evidently shows that this was a cop-out and badly written aspect of the story. There's no definite answer to explain this, but speculation based on no previous evidence, but assumption after assumption. This is a cop-out at its finest.

Bungee Gum acted by itself because of the command after death, it's as simple as that. Hisoka being dead, the parameters change. It's not something which can happen now that Hisoka is alive.

the way hisoka asked or prayed to his nen, reminds me of when gon asked for enough power to beat pitou

i believe that when someone gets to that level, where they are a master of nen, the nen evolves and harmonizes with the user, its not about good or bad or anything like that, the nen becomes stronger the more dedicated you are to your cause , the more dedicated you are to your purpose just like how kurapika is so dedicated to killing the spiders, that is why uvo was so impressed with kurapikas nen
in the case of hisoka, it was a much more broken request, or at least it seemed so, what gon asked for was ridiculous, however it came with a major consequence

i guess we will see if hisoka has any negative consequences to the blessing the nen bestowed upon him

What exactly makes you think that bungee gum cannot contract if hisoka does not move his limbs? It did so throughout the manga, contracting and expanding at will.

And no, once his fingers were blown off, he said he could use it with less accuracy, not that he could not use it.
In fact him saying that he can use it without fingers does contradict what you said.
Bungee gum works like this: Hisoka points somewhere and it shoots out, like spiderman, and then he can contract it again.
For example in the fight against chrollo, when hisoka was lying on the ground, he used max contract to pull himself away from chrollo while still guarding himself with his legs and arms:

http://view.thespectrum.net/series/hunter-x-hunter.html?ch=Chapter+351&page=13

He is guarding himself while shooting the gum and still guarding himself while contracting it.
There is no indication at all that he has to move his limb to shoot or contract.
He just usually points his finger or fist for that to enhance accuracy.

Why is that pathetic? There are medical professionals who do mess up, exspecially in states where there is no medical equipment readily available.
There is a reason why in former times and in third world nations, it is not just freak cases where someone is declared dead and then rises again.
There are countless of news story in the internet about it even in more developed nations in southern america, for example.

Again: A cop out is if you write yourself into a corner and then decide to not follow through with your initial plan.
Nothing about this fight tells us this is what happened. Togashi wanted the twist to happen exactly like that.
He had several years to think about these chapters and he didnt set them up, so he could, at any point, have decided to change it.
The fact that he didnt was that he believed strongly in what he wrote there instead of thinking 'oh well i dont wanna mess it up with the fans'.

I even agree that togashi could have explained it in more detail what happened, but it is by no means unbelievable that it can happen with the things which were established in the manga.
Bungee gum giving cpr is no problem at all, nen becoming stronger or reactivating after death was established too.
The only real problem is the timeframe at which hisoka had no pxygen delivered to his brain, but if we assume a favourable timefram here it does work, and there is nothing to contradict that assumption really.

There is really nothing that cannot be explained. It was meant to be something unreliable and uncommon in the hunter world which was no sure bet to pull off, so it is fine of being a bit of a stretch which needs some assumptions, but at no point does it downright contradict anything established in the manga.[/QUOTE]

the way hisoka asked or prayed to his nen, reminds me of when gon asked for enough power to beat pitou

i believe that when someone gets to that level, where they are a master of nen, the nen evolves and harmonizes with the user, its not about good or bad or anything like that, the nen becomes stronger the more dedicated you are to your cause , the more dedicated you are to your purpose just like how kurapika is so dedicated to killing the spiders, that is why uvo was so impressed with kurapikas nen
in the case of hisoka, it was a much more broken request, or at least it seemed so, what gon asked for was ridiculous, however it came with a major consequence

i guess we will see if hisoka has any negative consequences to the blessing the nen bestowed upon him
Maybe, but hisoka didnt ask for much.
The thing he wanted from his nen was contracting and expanding at certain spots. That is not hell of a lot to ask, he didnt get superpowers.

I can accept that hisoka can do that because hisoka seems even more talented at nen usage than gon and killuah.

Gon is incredibly talented too, but he could only pull off what he did against pitou because of his emotional trauma.
His talent and trauma went hand in hand to create the desired effect.

the thing is: Hisoka was not traumatized. he didnt want to die but it didnt seem like he was afraid or had any strong desire to keep living (at least not stronger than the usual desire to do so).
He is just that good that he tried something he never did before and it actually worked out just fine.
A lot like he never before created limbs out of his nen, and he could just do it.

Hisoka is just incredibly good at nen usage and was that throughout the manga.
I do think that he didnt really know whether he can do it with a lot of tricks he did before he did them.

That wasn't Bungee gum animating itself that you showed, it was sticking which gum naturally does. It only works via momentum, not animation. You're yet to provide evidence of Bungee gum animating itself.

Guess it's just down to opinion. I'll personally see this as bad writing if not a cop-out.

hisoka did not move while doing that.
Why makes u think there was momentum involved?

This one is another Panel:

http://view.thespectrum.net/series/hunter-x-hunter.html?ch=Chapter+353&page=18

IT is clearly seen that hisoka does not Change Position at all but rather says 'bungee gum activate' and it just does.
