Bleach ended, Kochikame will end in 2 weeks, Gintama and Toriko will likely end in 6 months. So just like that, there will be no more series from the 2000's. One Piece and HxH will be the only series that didn't start this current decade. And Haikyuu will be the 3rd oldest series (which started in 2012) in the magazine...

MHA is already outselling Hakyuu. Now with the coming anime adaptation Black clover will be very close to AssClass. And I find it funny that we know the print numbers for some manga. Probably most of jump manga have nothing to brag about.

Hey, is the ideal moment to finish Kochikame. I checked how much is left to complete the volume 200, it just needs one more chapter, but the 40th Anniversary is in 5 issues. A final volume extra larger (since volume 191, has about 300 pages, anyway), very special. Akimoto turns 64 years old in December, may retire.
Prophetic xD

The last volume come out the same day that the last chapter is published in the magazine, everything was ready.

Kochi Kame : 199 volumes : 150 000 000.
Wasn't the series in 157 Million copies in print already?

Does anyone have a rough estimate of Kochikame individual volume sold? Data from 2008 showed that it decreased to around 100k/volume. My guess is the first 50~ volumes must be at least in the 700k-1 million range.
Kochikame will end O_O! I don't know what to think I loved the anime of it and the few chapters scanlated are really good.

Wasn't the series alrea

Haikyuu at volume 10 still didn't had its anime. In fact volume 10 was the volume that came out right before the anime started. It is here that Haikyuu!! numbers will start to increase.

Black Clover is nowhere close to AssClass and almost certain, unless some super mega surprise popularity happens, will not get close to AssClass.
With 7 volumes Black Clover has 1,600,000 copies in print, Assassination Classroom had 7,055,000 copies(Note that is more than 10 volumes of My Hero Academia).

Kochikame will have the cover in the last issue T_T

It totally deserves it! Now for One Piece to also get it.

Will it have a full color final chapter?

I'm more emotional that I should be for the end of Kochikame :'(

It's kind of hard to imagine this magazine without Kochikame.

wow, these numbers are so strange.

DB had 5,000,000 at 4 volumes which seems to be insane, but then one piece at 21 was already higher than dragon ball at 23, not to mention slam dunk at 22 which is even HIGHER.

is it possible that a lot of DB's sales came from the next generation of readers after the series was over? because with these numbers i dont understand how DB sold so much more (and more per volume) than Slam Dunk

maybe DB's sales increased later, volume 23 was the Ginyu force. I feel that around the time of the super saiyans and subsequent cell saga is when the dbz craze would really start
Is normal of really high popular series to have a 2nd resurgence some good years after they end. Dragon Ball got that and sold around 50 Million more than what it had.
Dragon Ball volume 35 was the best volume of the series with 2.2 Million copies in print. I believe that was around the Cell Saga. At volume 23 Dragon Ball was at 1.6 Million copies in print and was in a progressive increase.

It can be strange, but the 5 Million copies by 4 volumes wasn't considered really "that popular" for Toriyama and the editors given the already established popularity he had at that time. For what Toriyama said in interview, the editors taught the series really "got popular" when it reached the Picollo Damiyo arc.

I dont think heroaca will outdo Haikyuu. Fastest to sell most copies at random timepoint doesnt matter at the end of the day as Haikyuu still outsells heroaca.

Geez, does this mean that aside from HXH, One piece is now the oldest series in the magazine? That's pretty mind asplod-y to think about.

Oh! I just checked and you're absolutely right! So One piece is now officially the oldest series in the magazine. Wow, that's...kind of incredible considering OP started in 1997.

That JUMP cover looks cool, I can see a Ryotsu drawn by Oda, but who drew the other Ryotsus? (Obviously other than Akimoto)

@DoctorApollo @Bigivelfhq

As for why Dragon ball ended up selling more than Slam Dunk, it's appeal is probably more universal, I love Slam Dunk but my guess is that most of its sales are either from 1990 to 1996 (Its ending) and probably 2003 to 2004 (kanzenban release), Dragon Ball in comparison is 6 years older (so you should add an extra 6 years worth of sales), its run was from 1984 to 1995 so it had a bigger span of years of popularity, IIRC in 2003 it also got a rerelease (A kanzenban, like Slam Dunk), then in 2009 Dragon Ball kai was broadcasted, I can only assume that got Shueisha into reprinting Dragon Ball (IIRC they hadn't reprint the normal tankobon, but it got a reprint in 2009 -IIRC- with a new spine art

Old Tankobon spine (1984 release)

Kanzenban version (2003 release)

New Tankobon spine (2009 release)

Dragon Ball also got a full color release in 2013, Shueisha first started with 3 volumes covering the Saiyan saga, and they haven't finished the entire Dragon Ball manga, they just released the Childhood arc (Dragon Ball's first volumes) in full color in 2016.

Right now Dragon Ball it's also being released in a Soushuhen edition called "Legend edition" (The edition is very similar to Weekly Shonen Jump, basically a 700 or so pages magazine but full of Dragon Ball, and it includes the original color pages and some random freebies, so it's a cheap way to collect the series)

Slam Dunk, to my knowledge was only every rereleased in the Kanzenban format, and Takehiko Inoue (not Shueisha) is the owner of its property.

So basically Dragon Ball got 'released' 5 times, the 84 version, the 2003 Kanzenban, the 2009 re-edition of the tankobon, the full color release that started in 2013, and the recent 2016 Dragon Ball Legend edition... vs Slam Dunk's 2 releases, the original 1990 and the 2003 kanzenban..
Also Dragon Ball never really lost its mainstream appeal in Japan, right now you can go to a Jump shop and it's there, or to different Parks like Universal or J-World and it's there, it has lost of games, movies, anime, etc etc.. While Slam Dunk kinda faded into oscurity.. Sort of because it's definetly popular, but it just didn't had the lasting popularity Dragon Ball still maintains, and that's why I think Dragon Ball eventually outsold Slam Dunk.

Putting it other way, most people think it was Titanic or Avatar that are the highest grossing movies of all time, but Gone with the Wind is the highest grossing movie of all time. Adjusted for inflation it has made 3.3 billion dollars.
But it made most of its money from rereleases, "Gone with the Wind made 506 million in its first 4 years and had 8 other re-releases over the span of 60 years to bring its total to 3.3 billion."

I took this last 'Gone with the wind' part from a reddit post because it seemed to be a nice comparison to how Dragon Ball probably outsold Slam Dunk
