Because this is a Hayazaki animation. Stupidly famous in Japan and even on this side of the world... Just because YOU don't know about it, does not mean that japanese kids or readers won't get it =)
I have watched most Hayazaki films. Also is not good to assume that just because Hayazaki's movies are famous everyone's seen it, they may have heard of the films but that doesn't means they've ever actually watched them. It's better to appeal with current pop-culture as in within the last three years then try to appeal with something from 14 years ago since most of your potential fans are probably within the age groups of 8 - 18 years of age meaning they probably haven't seen it

Castle in the Sky is actually 31 years old. It premiered in 1986.

It's not that a person doesn't get the joke parse it more of whether the joke itself was funny, and also why would writer make jokes that reference a movie that came out 14 years ago when potentially most of the readers haven't watched it let alone ever heard of it.Come on that's just bad forethought on Tamuras part lets be honest.
I know, right? It always annoys me whenever someone references something like Star Wars, why would you assume anyone's watched something as old as that?

I don't have problem with references, as long they're just fan service and aren't the main source of humor. It's better make something who people are going to want to reference than making something who live only with references.

As recent as January of last year, Castle in the sky was shown on TV and pulled in 17.9%.

That's at the least a good indicator that the movie is still going strong in the country and saying that that is all older fans is mute. Older fans themselves cannot pull in ratings that high. Sazae-san pulls in r=high ratings every week because the whole family watches it every week. Also, it should be said that there's this thing called "金曜ロードショー" (Kinyo roadshow) or Friday roadshow where on NTV around 9pm ,they air Classic movies and Ghibli movies are regularly played.

I wasn't trying to say that they haven't seen the movie or anything it's just a ludicrous way of thinking that Tamura has done as a writer hoping the fans he's drown in is one of those few have watched it

And i'm sure only a few American kids from this generation have seen Little Mermaid, Beauty & the Beast, or Lion King. It's not ludicrous at all.
Miyazaki films are timeless. Stop pretendimg to sound informed or knowlegeable about Shueshia or Japanese culture. Why don't you ask your uncle if his students are familiar with Miyazaki? If he hasn't already gotten a job at Nintendo that is.

You're maximizing your own lack of knowledge. It's ok to not get all the references of a series. That's exactly why foruns like this exist, so people can talk, teach and learn about stuff that they have in common

As a discussion, which jump artists you have noticed that their art has evolved the most? And put photos for differences and describe which aspects are the most evolved, like coloring, inking, etc
Araki's

Very glad that the manga moved to a monthly magazine. Part 7 and onward received a great improvement.

Speaking of Jojo we should expect some of our WSJ mangakas to contribute a drawing for the 30th anniversary of Jojo. I wonder which of the newer ones will contribute, definitely the veterans will contribute

I'm sure Gotoge and Pozuka will.
No way they aren't Araki fans.
We'll probably get something from Togashi as well.

Remember what he gave us for the 25th anniversary?

My ranking so far on the new series:
  1. We Never Learn
  2. Hungry Marie
  3. Poro
  4. U19
To be honest though, I skimmed through like the first 10 or so pages of Poro but it has good art which already makes it better than U19. I think that one was the worst so far. I liked Hungry Marie, it was funny. Haven't read Tamura's last work so I can't comprehend with the same face complaints. Not even going to touch Golf and still got hope for Dr. Stone, the summary for it already sounds lit so hope it is.

You can't really compare the art of Jojo part 7 and 8 to the rest of the series due to it switching to monthly.

Speaking of which, I'm looking forward to seeing Kishimoto's art whenever he starts his new monthly series. He's a really good artist but going by interviews and such he's not a particularly fast one and it definitely showed in Naruto, I'm curious to see what he can do on a monthly schedule where he's got plenty of time to draw everything in detail.

Gotoge will be interesting but out of curiosity, what makes you think she's a fan?

Yea I remember that lol. Togashi contributing is a given, he did it for Dragon Ball's anniversary too.

I know but even part 6 art was nice. It's just part 7 exceeded my expectations

The fight in the house with the arrows that changed gravity and the drum that changed rooms felt like something someone who really like Araki would come up with.
The intentional tonal shifts and comradery between the cast remind of both Araki and TogashI a lot.

I've got a bit of a flipped question, what Jump artist do you think has changed/developed the least over time?

One that's always struck me is the Adventure of Dai/Beet artist, their art is certainly different now but not really all that much considering it's been almost 30 years since Dai first started.

That makes me think of another question, I guess they're not really a thing in this magazine these days so it's hard to really know for certain but how do licensed series work in a magazine as competitive as WSJ? Dai was really popular so it was fine but I can't imagine it being cancelled in the first few months if it hadn't done quite as well.

Series based on pre-existing properties, like Dai's Big Adventure being an official Dragon Quest manga.

Truw that...that fight reminded of Josuke & co. encounter with Kira's dad at his house.

To be fair it could be more togashi than araki in that regard. I hope you're right though.
