You don't even need to discount JQ for being too dark and edgy, the only non-gag series in the magazine without an anime yet that's old enough to consider adapting is Kono Oto Tomare! and that isn't their type of thing for a completely different reason.

You never know with Toei though, I didn't think World Trigger was their type of series at all (it's slow and methodical and pretty low on goofiness) and they done that old sumo manga a couple years back pretty suddenly.

People also forgot that Toei used to do a slew of Otaku centric shows like Air as well as alternative shounen manga adaptations of Air Master and Air Gear over a decade ago, its only nowadays do people only associate them as "the last studio you would want to adapt your manga" even though they were pretty much the go to studio when it came to adapting Shounen Jump manga for over 20 years before other studios stepped in.

Hinomaru Zumo would be possible by using some of Tiger Mask W´s team.

But are you suggesting that they start working into that series only now? The series need to have a good time of production before even gets green-lit notice. The guys from Tiger Mask W's team picking Hinomaru Zumou would probably mean the anime starting next year.

Unfortunately, there are a handful of reasons why sumo anime doesn't happen these days, which means that it's near impossible for Hinomaru Zumo to happen anytime soon. This article explains it:

If Dungeon Meshi doesn't win then clearly the voting committee has grudge toward the author /s. 4 years nomination on 3 different series.

I think the original series is getting a re-airing starting next month (that's what it looks like on the site anyway).

Yeah its just a rebroadcast. Why anyone would want a reboot or a more "faithful" adaptation of the manga ala Sailor Moon Crystal is beyond me.

Toei can do any of the series. While the studio main focus is kids, they do a lot of different things. People really underestimate Toei in that aspect, but they are the big pioneers of a lot of anime "genres" and "styles". Did you know that Toei Animation was the big booster of Moe "genre". Yep, with Kanon in 2002. Showing that is possible to make a highly popular series with Moe.

I would say that right now there is really little chance for any series to be adapted by Toei. But who knows? The planning team in Toei might have loved a series in the Jump labeled magazines and decided to push for that series to be adapted.

About fitting their mo, and being too dark and edgy for kids. There is nothing in Jump Comics right now(for my knowledge) that is "too dark and edgy for kids" compared to Mononoke and Ayakashi. And those were still original Toei Series. The best Psychological anime series I ever seen, is from Toei Animation, Kuchuu Buranko.
Next Season we will get another original Toei Animation series, Kado: The correct Answer. And that series is basically a Political and Philosophic series.

do you really think Platinum End is appropriate for kids?

There is a big difference of when Toei is doing stuff for kids and when its not. Opposite with many other studios, Toei really thinks about their audience, and so when dealing with Kids they pay special attention because they are the leading anime studio.
But when not in kid series, while they don't go totally retarded with edgy and gore and stuff like that(like Sunrise that got to split companies because of that :P), they still go the extra mile. Take just the example of the current running Tiger Mask W!

all the recent wsj adaptations landed there dbz kai, toriko, world trigger...

I don't even remember what was their last wsj adaptation that wasn't in this block, i think it was bobobo but I'm not sure?

that must be the block that makes them the most profit when they adapt wsj manga so they will continue using it

If the intial rumours were true about DBS only being 100 eps (I know it wasnt confirmed though, but the scale cant get much bigger after this arc) then that would mean the slot next to OP would be open soonish. Although they already would have announced if they were picking up something new so i guess theyll just rerun or something.

Scale doesn't mean much unfortunately in terms of continuation, look at the end of the war in Naruto and then you get Boruto.
