I like Slam Dunk op and DBZ Kai ed

This is being blown way out of proportion. I didn't continue with the argument initially because it's not worth the time. This is getting out of hand for a small comment made by a fan of a series.

Just to add though, I feel like 'overhyped' is a term you can use with anything popular, so this isn't really connecting with me.
sorry, I was trying to avoid that happening, I quoted Avok because I was interested to see his point of view, but someone else responded with strawman arguments so then I pointed that out and he responded with more strawman arguments, I realized we're going around in circles so I just logged out and stopped responding

I'll just finish with this, insults are not a valid criticism

I'll also leave this here too

So no issues with MHA's first episode except the recaps, the animation and music was on point, even the filler scenes were good. One lowkey thing the anime team put an onus on that I liked was how they made a point on Shigaraki being a "man-child" and how he's someone who could be dangerous when he gets taught well (AFO, Overhaul) when he matures. It's been something people talk about, this forum specifically so good for anime viewers to understand that too. Really looking forward to this season :verily

The people who claim the 99 adaptation is superior are the same types of people who try and claim Gon-san was an asspull, or that the series doesn't have deconstruction tendencies.
They clearly aren't reading the same series.

Sure, it has some really nice direction and some pretty animation. Doesn't mean it didnt completely missed/ignore what Togashi was trying to do.

Openings I loved from recent series are

Food Wars OP 1

Haikyuu OP 4

Naruto Shippuden OP 19

MHA OP 2(I know many ppl think it's far inferior to OP 1, but I love Haikyuu OP 4, and this one is animated by the same guy and is very similar)

Bleach had the best OPs, IMO.

This was a good ending cause it made sense, unlike the actual manga ending

I think both Hunter x Hunter adaptations despite their pros are pretty flawed. (typing on a tablet so I can't really go as in depth as I'd like to on this)

99 ruins the atmosphere of the manga by slowing down the pace, over-dramatizing things, and the color pallet. The more boring character designs don't help either.
HxH is supposed to be constantly tone shifting, and it's anti-climatic moments are part of what makes it so well written.
99 still has some incredible direction and animation but the adaptation thoroughly missed the point and made a much more generic feeling series than the manic beautiful mess which is the HxH manga.
Can't say I agree. I feel it was the unveying focus on a single tone that helped elevate it than anything else. While the genere shifts is a stable with Togashi I don't feel he pulls them off as flawlessly as a lot of people seem to believe that being said I don't think the same team behind HxH 1999 would have done a better job with the material but would have made it more of an experience than a stright adaptation. One thing I love with how they handled Yorknew was how the dark brooding tone lend itself to the visuals and the music that it makes it more of an experience than an adaptation. In the 2011 adaptation there was a tad too many breaks in tone that destroyed the immersion, you had the happy-go lucky opening theme, the terrible soundtrack and direction and the too bright color palette which made scenes look a lot more silly than they needed to be. I feel that the 1999 series was a group a talented individuals coming together to make Togashi's story a memorable experience animated while the 2011 series are just people mandated to create an anime adaptation without putting anything worth noting into it, its only good because the source of material is good not because the anime does anything to elevate it.

Speaking of the first HxH anime, I have really fond memories of the locally dubbed opening in my country... I still have it on my iPhone too. The opening is seriously one of the very few that actually works. I'd even go so far as to say it's better than any thing 4kids would probably be able to come up with, with the exception of the Pokemon songs.

Clearly HxH isn't a series for you then.
Hunter x Hunter is a deconstruction. It's meant to be full of crazy tone changes, and anti-climatic finishes.
Things are supposed to go from silly to terrifying. That's the point. It's taking what you'd expect to see done in a battle shonen and going completely fucking elsewhere.
Gon is a great example of a deconstruction of the go-lucky, full of energy shonen protagonist given how he's legitimately insane.
You're literally praising the 1999 anime for taking something unique and making it generic

How could you hate this.
One of the best damn openings there is. Seriously. It's OPs like this and Shippuden's 6th Opening that puts Pierrot up there in the pantheon of music direction (particulary for their openings and endings).

HxH 2011 did a great job with the Chimera ant arc. It could've cut down on the narrations but they were just being faithful. Netero & Gon's fight were done incredibly well and a certain death that happened near the end of the arc.

It should've sold a lot more.
