I laught a little with "the PLOT image", because Komi , Miura and WNL guy will wish to have half of the talent of Umezu and write some like Maoyuu or Log Horizon.
Is also funny seeing people saying " why is World end haren is selling"(obviously is because the nipples) when Nisekoi and WNL doesn't sell because their complex storytelling or wel lwriten-character(It sell because the waifubait).

Here's something interesting Oda said in an article recently put up on 2ch:

He says that when he was a kid reading Shonen Jump, most of the stories tended to be inconsistent. He liked Kinnikuman around that time. During that period of Jump, they'd introduce a new character(s) in a big fashion one week and the next week, those characters would quietly be phased out. Mangaka prioritized writing a fun and interesting story above all else and thus consistency took a backseat. Kids also didn't really care about just issues and would read it regardless so when Oda decided to become a mangaka, he decided he would make everything consistent. The past and future and all characters would be connected and wouldn't be phased out like in the past. One Piece represents this objective.

However, currently he says that people have become rather nagging about manga. They will look through the various inconsistencies or contradictions with a more fine tooth comb. He said that in the past Shonen Jump was read almost exclusively by kids but now adult also read jump so that may be one of the reasons for this "new" nagging. Now, Mangaka, in order to satisfy these older readers, have to make sure everything is correct and doesn't become inconsistent. Oda himself feels slightly responsible for this. However, when creating a story, making sure everything is connected or all the events have been properly foreshadowed of hinted; "rules" like these do not exist. He says that, as a challenge, he created a story where everything is consistent but normally you can freely create stories without having to do all of these. Stories like "the nutcracker and the mouse king", which were created to entertain people are born through this "free" writing.

I think he certainly has a point regarding this as series like Heroaca are constantly bashed recently because some things, like Nighteye's power, seemingly don't connect together and any effort to later connect them seems like a response to the initial bashing.

Just to clarity your misunderstanding, I was not bashing Maoyuu with the image, I just googled an image that represented what I was trying to say and this one was the best I found. I did drop Maoyuu when it came out, but this is another matter entirely.

Well.... I prefer not to discuss it AGAIN.

Oda is right and although he thinks that the mentality changed, the level continues kind of the same with the inconsistencies that we see a lot from Jump mangas. This commentary from Oda just made clear to me that One Piece is all about consistency, it is the most consistent series I've ever read, you can study One Piece and draw a graph with all the correlations, it is like a network! It only shows how amazing Oda is, keeping up with all this.

Not all series need to be completely consistent, it depends on the genre, mostly, and what the author aims with the series. I demand consistency a lot from adventure mangas while I don't demand that much from romances and slice of life. The most important thing it is to remain true to itself, follow the rules you created in the story. The authors cannot do whatever they want just because they are the author, they have to abide by the rules they created themselves.

Oda is correct. Best example is Black Clover. I think this thread would receive it much better if we were all 12-13 and not in our early-mid 20s. Most of us love Dragon Ball but Toriyama got away with a lot of bullshit but he made it in a cool way so to speak. :p

I think he undersells the importance of scaling up the story. One Piece's early chapters weren't complicated and the progression was seemingly random: just some kid on a boat bumping into strange things. Sure there was already some big end goals but it took almost a year of publication to meet Sanji and to really talk about the Grand Line. The storytelling right up to Robin's joining the crew was actually fairly straightforward and free.

A lot of nagging from adult readers comes from folks impatient for the next big thing and want One Piece's 800 chapters of complexity within the first dozen chapters. This pressures the writers to promise more than they can handle and ends up risking their stories: Bleach's many battle teams, Shokugeki's villain/global administration, whatever Hungry Marie is already doing, etc. The thing that drags those down isn't 'inconsistency', it's the distraction from the proper storytelling.

Oda is a genious... We can't even begin to argue about that.

It's different to "not like the manga" and be "inconsistent".

MHA is inconsistent. Black Clover is just not that good. Two different things.

One Piece was not complicated and it is not today either, the connections are very well made so you absorb it every fast and don't forget anymore. Well, Luffy was a aimless pirate with a crew in the beginning, what would you expect? It is not consistent?
One Piece first chapters hold more information than many series don't have in 20 chapters, many authors get busy with meaningless things and put character and world development aside.

I'm not entirely sure what point you're trying to make so bear with me. One Piece is consistent because the story stayed simple enough to manage and scaled up in a gradual way.

In the first 20 chapters we learn about:
  1. Buggy and Shanks' backstory
  2. Devil fruits
  3. Three nakama
  4. One corrupt marine
  5. The treasure
Nothing ironclad about the world and only some interesting personalities. Everything open-ended and flexible.

Getting too caught up in world development before readers get a chance to enjoy the story has choked a lot of series.

I agree wholeheartedly with Oda and yes One Piece's consistency is a big reason why it has remained at the top of Jump going on 20 years which would explain why the majority of its fanbase are adults that being said I don't believe inconsistency can be detrimental to appealing to adults nowadays as he claims; case in point AssClass was a huge success but there's a lot of aspects to it that don't add up and it feels like Matsui was just making shit up as he went along hence why the story twists in the last half of the manga had no weight to them but the reason why that this doesn't get called to attention much is that the core of the series was about the relationship between Koro-sensei and his students everything else was supplementary to that and it was a huge draw to readers especially those still in school or nostalgic for it. One Piece is all about its world and story structure if Oda slips up it can seemingly all fall apart whereas Toriyama can continue to introduce more and more bullshit in every new arc in Dragonball and it doesn't really matter since the story is presented that anything can happen and even the concept of death has no consequence. I don't really think its much of generation gap and more so that new series tend to have a habit of overexplaining themselves and giving away too much within the first chapter than letting the series breathe to let the readers be engrossed by its setting for themselves, the brilliance of One Piece isn't made apparent until you've read through Mihawk's first introduction and you've made aware of how engrossing it is despite it being mostly set up and through Mihawk's introduction you're made witness into Oda's first of many payoffs.

Very happy that Viz finally decided to add their free section to the app. Now I can read Astra without having to deal with their terrible online reader.

Because visible nips gets the hits and borderline porn makes you think with your horn.

Though to be fair, you can see the nips in the volumes of Yuragi.

I own volumes from both series while Yuragi in itself is a fun read, Shuumatsu no Harem is just straight up guilty pleasure.

Am I seeing people underestimating One Piece first arcs as if it was something disposable? Of all nonsenses I read here, this one is the biggest by far.
