We are trying to be more realistic than Shueisha here by bringing My Hero Academia in the conversation because Black Clover as new Naruto just won't happen. My Hero Academia is already reaching its expiration date as well, so I don't think it will come any close as well, but still has 1% chance.

The comparison between the two has always been under false pretenses to begin with essentially because both series had nothing in common and it was just people giving a moniker to something that it never was. THANK GOD Shueisha didn't take the same bait or it would have suffered the same fate as Toriko, a good to great manga being crushed by the high expectations of readers thanks to adverts pushing it as the next _______ prompting people to hate on it when it never did.

A three year old manga is suddenly reaching an expiration date? What's the excuse going to be this time?

As a franchise I still believe Dragon ball is bigger than One Piece. Bandai are expecting Dragon ball to generate 75.7 billion yen for them this fiscal year whilst they are expecting One Piece to generate 26 billion yen. Also last fiscal year Dragon ball generated 61.1 billion yen for Bandai whilst One Piece made 30.4 billion yen. Dragon ball to Shueisha is comparable to a marvel IP like Spider-Man in the sense that they expect it to keep selling for as close to forever as possible. That's why Shueisha created the Dragon ball department last year that focuses solemnly on Dragon ball.

Literally a blessing and a curse lol
Honestly despite its good intentions of "passing on to the next generation" that it conveyed it did more damage then it needed to and got people thinking the wrong thing.

Yep DB is beating OP NOW because they're dishing out new content but years before it was actually struggling in sales and ratings compared to now given how poorly received Kai was and of course the embrassment which was Dragonball Evolution prompted Toriyama to stop lazying about and actually care about the franchise again which led to a revival of interest starting with Battle of Gods and now Super.

Dokkan Battles and Fusions were Bandai Namco's top selling games of last year next to Treasure Cruise and Gundam Maxi Boost ON.

That's true, Dragon ball did fall off for a while but at this point after the two movies and Super it is an unstoppable force. Credit to Shueisha though for waiting a long time before reviving the series because the market was ready at that point for more Dragon ball. Remember: Evolution does not exist(maybe if I say that enough times i'll actually believe it).

Wonder if we'll get a MHA movie annoucement sometime soon. Since I'm new to the business, do they usually wait until they know for sure they can profit from a series getting a movie? Looking at the ratings its doing great in terms of that.

I think it's more likely that a t.v. special would happen. Personally I think it's to soon for a movie to be made for it.

Heroaca and even Horikoshi himself are already being bashed relentlessly due to it not becoming "the next Naruto". While not explicitly stated like BC now, Kishimoto's illustration for the anime at the least showed that there were high expectations for something similar although its entirely possible that that was something Kishimoto did on his own because he genuinely enjoyed and hoped for the best for Heroaca.

If you follow even a few matome sites and look at the comments, in general, at least half are bashing the series. I don't want to get too deep in this but people found fault with the fact that Sir was using stamps as weapons and that Mirio kicked Chrono by phasing through Eri.

My take on this is that the comparisons are fitting between the two series, as MHA has some elements in its story that itself borrows from Naruto. But at the same time, it distinguishes itself from its predecessors by establishing its own characters. One of the reasons Naruto was as big as it was is because it had something that defined an entire generation.

For MHA, I believe it has that same thing that will define this generation and the next generation. I see it as the "next Naruto", but for different reasons. I'm not looking for an exact copy of it. I'm looking for a series that can be generation-defining just like its predecessors did. That's what the "next big thing" for me is.

As for numbers, I would very much like it to crack a million-seller like all the other series before it, but there are a few factors:

1. We still have no exact number on digital tankobon sales, but as has been implied by Jump's editor-in-chief, the digital Jump sales have been steadily increasing, so it's very likely the total tankobon sales are much higher than it actually is. (I'd make a bet on it between 700K-800K total including prints)

2. The anime is increasingly popular in Japan, and we still haven't gotten to the really good parts yet. So, who knows? It's still a possibility that volume sales will spike after next season. And that's not even getting into the possibility of BONES going balls out with next season's budget.

Yeah. I think Naruto had one in its 5th year in publication.

People said the exact same thing in regards to season 2...
There are no written rules in this, but I don't see it happening.

Are there a lot of examples of a WSJ series jumping in popularity because of it's later seasons? MHA manga fans are really pumped for a third season and I loved season 2 so if season 3 is better than S2 then I hope it gets more of a boost than ever before.

I think the best example was One Piece with it's enormous sales peak in 2011, so aside from that are there examples of series that jumped in popularity more than ever before because of what was animated that happened pretty late into the series? (with OP's case I think it was b/c of Strong World)

Budget won't change. Just pray for Yutaka Nakamura being involved a lot more and the staff not changing...at least for the worst. xD

Yeah they treat MHA like how people here treat BC though at least MHA has general good reception for anything they slam it for unlike BC where people are either indifferent to it or outright hate it. Toriko also got similar treatment largely do to Shueisha pushing it alongside One Piece and DB though it was publicly forced down that people would just slam it without even reading the manga.

Well...HxH though that was a full-fledged remake.

This sounds really optimistic. People said the same thing about season 2 with the tournament arc and the Stain arc, but there hasn't been a big boost in volume sales like people were hoping (besides backlogs). I want MHA to be a million per volume seller as well, but I doubt that will happen. Season 3, if it even happens, has to really draw people in for it to cause a large boost in sales. I'd assume that season 2 will end with the final exam arc, then if season 3 does come, they can fit the school trip and hideout raid arcs (28 total chapters) into a 12/13 episode season.

Also, looking at the story arcs on the wiki, I realize just how fast the pacing is in MHA (whether that's good or bad is debatable). The arcs are only about 10-20 chapters each.
