A hit series with a 1 million first printing. We want to create a series that once again is able to become a hit with kids, like One piece, Naruto and Bleach. Right now, Jump is lacking in characters that all young boys know." He continues, "Comic print circulation isn't everything but creating a character that everyone in the world knows is important. We want to create interesting manga. This is a joke but, we want to undertake world conquest with characters."
Looking at it 2 cours later there is a boost as it did almost as much as Vol 13 did in 12 days in 5 days. However I don't think this volume will be able to pass 300k either.
Soma also continues in its decline selling less than Volume 27 which had one day less for its first week. Up till now, Soma was able to pass 300k and the anime is running but we'll see if it does pass it.
At the event "Jump's Future 2018", Nakano gave an interview and talked about what they (the editorial) wants to do from here on out. When the topic of what current Jump is lacking he answered, "A hit series with a 1 million first printing. Regarding current Jump he says, "Jump is struggling with series that are aimed at kids. The age of the readership is also growing. Kids are watching Youtube, so that has become the rival. If there was an app that could connect kids with manga." The previous EiC Heishi was also there and he says, "Overseas, even if the story isn't received well, the characters are. The power of characters is strong and so we want to use them well."
This is rather interesting but again they seem to be focused on physical print numbers. Its nice that they're looking to make an app but I really have to wonder what their plans for digital ventures are. Also, it was mentioned previously that Stone was popular among kids so that might be one reason they're putting a lot of effort into promoting it. I can also see Build King being liked by kids and them pushing that as well.

They didn't mention Build King. That was my speculation regarding something kids might take to. That doesn't mean it will become a huge hit but at least its in line with their plan of getting kids back into Jump.
Nothing. It's just that Nakano is still stuck in the glory days of the Golden Era of Jump. If Jump wanted to, they could sell single chapters for a buck a piece digitally like comixology does with mangas. The biggest downside, is of course, that newcomers wouldn't have better chances to establish themselves. However, this should be off-set by a model that provides free downloads up until 7-8 chapters for these upstarts. And if readers like it enough, they would pay for the following chapters.
perhaps for some series, the lowering print numbers arent being replaced by people buying the digital copies.
Also, unless Im wrong, you dont really see even 10% of the jump+ digital series actually getting big sales, I think theres only been three jump+ original breakout hits?

Though, I guess the true savior of Jump would be a Shueisha type of Hulu/Netflix/etc service to where you can read as much manga as you want...but its doubtful something like that will happen.
You can actually. Music is a lot easier to consume, store and share digitally without the need of a CD and physical format but the fact is that physical formats are still popular. Whenever popular artists release new music, physical copies sold of albums are almost always more.
It's a good comparison to books and paper going digital because they both were and still are consumed by physical copies but can also be more easily accessed by digital means.
