You did the right thing, I wouldn't have been this surprised if I had expected this to happen o/
Tbh tho, I think the series would have a lot more readers if its beggining wasn't so hard to follow. There were a couple of times I was reading it and felt like "Damn, this is not my thing, so slow..." "I can't understand whats going on, I should drop this..."
I kept reading cause you said it gets very good but many people might drop the series for its overcomplexity, now Im so glad I didn't.

This is the kind of series that has very high re-read value, Im sure I've missed a lot of details from the beggining that I didn't really understand before.
Toki's character is intriguing, his inner self feels so relatable unlike the typical MC.
There's only one thing that I dislike about him and its his judgmental self, he's excesively nosy... when he's so passive about himself.
He will take action when others have a goal or motive but when the decision falls on his shoulders he postpones the issue. He's been in complete denial about the situation since Ginshu explained it in the shrine, hoping the problem would fade away by ignoring it ._.
So I liked that he faced this grim turn of events after his second refusal to Bonten, since it will force him to develop.
As for the Warehouse mystery, I liked a lot how it was revealed. It was difficult to understand the depth of the situation at first, specially Imayou's relation with Tsuyukusa. I didn't fully get why he helped in its revenge till the conexion Tree Spirit-Demon was explained, then everything made sense.
I think the author has a strong tendency to "show and not tell" till the after-event. That makes things a little confusing in its first run, but very enjoyable as a foreshadowing style.
