After seeing the disaster that was Fairy tail
  • do you think that this new one is any better?
  • Did Mashima learn from his mistakes, the criticizm?
  • Can Eden zero become a better fiction than his previous work?

Also there seem to be a few chapters out by the time I am writing this,
  • is the series good at the moment?
  • Is it worth investing time into?
  • Are the fights filled with asspull power ups and "power of friendship" nonsense?
  • Is there a lot of bad taste and forced fanservice like Erza and Lucy getting their clothes ripped off every ten minutes getting tortured and stuff?

Coming from Someone who dropped Fairy tail after suffering through it for too long

it barely started.

Did Mashima learn from his mistakes, the criticizm?
hard to say, criticizm comes from the West mostly.

Can Eden zero become a better fiction than his previous work?
definitely.

is the series good at the moment
Yes.

Is it worth investing time into?
Yes.

Are the fights filled with asspull power ups and "power of friendship" nonsense?
Nope.

Is there a lot of bad taste and forced fanservice like Erza and Lucy getting their clothes ripped off every ten minutes getting tortured and stuff?
There is fanservice but not on the same level... yet.

It's hard to tell. By chapter 24 of FT the Galuna Arc was starting. We're about to finish this Guilst Arc in EZ. So I'll see how I feel about the characters after the next arc, assuming it's a good one.

Did Mashima learn from his mistakes, the criticizm?
Depends, I don't see much difference with this series. Whether or not he 'learned', or should have to, I can't say. In any case we'll have a better idea in time.

Can Eden zero become a better fiction than his previous work?
Of course, improving is always possible. 2 things I would like to see compared to FT is shorter story length (we already know there's an end because we've seen the future, so I'm hopeful), and more romance.

is the series good at the moment?
I like a lot about EZ. It's fun, I'm a fan of Hiro's art, there's a lot of exciting possibilities with the story, and it's light-hearted.

But I won't call it good, yet (and I won't say it's bad too). Hiro needs to consolidate the story at some point, and I'd prefer it soon. We're still finding our feet atm so I'm patient, but I don't have a never-ending supply of that. It should start with enriching the bonds of EZ's crew, in particular the outsiders like Weiss and Homura. When the crew has enough camaraderie, the fights will mean something, and we can cheer for something.

Is it worth investing time into?
For me, yes.

Are the fights filled with asspull power ups and "power of friendship" nonsense?
Yes on the 'power of friendship/emotions'. The same type of mechanic exists in EZ. Shiki was able to amplify his ether level with emotions.

Asspulls are to be confirmed. We haven't had tough fights yet. Also, I'd like to see more fights and techniques. Once we're familiar with how strong characters/abilities are, then we can say "ayy that's an asspull", or "ayy that's legit".

Is there a lot of bad taste and forced fanservice like Erza and Lucy getting their clothes ripped off every ten minutes getting tortured and stuff?
Depends. I'm somewhat immune/attracted to the usual Hiro fanservice. Y'know, unfortunate events where females might lose their clothes, characters ending in certain positions etc.

There was one I really didn't like.

Shiki examined Becca there. And like any examination, it was a cold experience.

Yes
And yes.

I think Eden Zero is a different series that Fairy Tail was. It's taken a lot of outside influences and isn't really being shy about it. It's also built for growth in a way that Fairy Tail never was. My feeling from reading it so far has been that he looked at One Piece and asked himself "What can I learn from this?". But also not abandoning the things that have worked for him in Fairy Tail and his previous series.

Also there seem to be a few chapters out by the time I am writing this,

Not yet.
And I would categorize the fanservice as "gloriously shameless"

I would compare the main character's strength to the Luffy at the beginning of One Piece. Very strong relative to the world around him but we've seen glimpses that he's still in the shallow end of the pool, so to speak. Also this is a sci-fi manga and it seems heavily implied that spaceships are going to factor in pretty majorly and you can't do an emo asspull with those. As for the ecchi, good and bad taste is a subjective thing. I think it's fine. Very fun for the most part. But if your sensitive to that kind of thing maybe it won't be for you. Can't really say.

So far so good, but it's hard to tell because I really enjoyed Fairy Tail when it was this early in the series as well.

Again, hard to say sense we're still early in the series. I doubt Mashima thinks he made any mistakes. Fairy Tail, by his admission, was supposed to be light hearted.

I haven't finished Rave Master and I dropped Fairy Tail so...I'm not in a position to say. If I can finish Eden's Zero, then I guess the default answer will be yes.

I'd say yeah. I'm enjoying it.

At the moment, yes.

Not that I've seen. Shiki fights for his friends, but he hasn't powered up because of them.

Lots of fan-service, but it's actually being treated with some decent weight. Surprised the hell out of me when Rebecca recently broke down into tears because of what she was put through during her kidnapping.

I think he learned from half of them. Only half. Because he is still writing generic villains and subpar fights which are better than Fairy Tail’s but still not that grand.

Idk about generalizing the whole of fairy tail when people consider certain parts, villains, and fights better than others. At this point in FT, the most prevalent development was on Galuna island with Ur’s history. Lyon was a villain with Gray vs Lyon as the apex of that arc which was a pretty solid fight. Especially one centered around the secondary male. And really it wasn’t until phantom lord that most people got hooked. So really all the arcs until now in Edens zero have been collecting people. And that’s what it has excelled at - collecting characters. The arcs haven’t been truly aimed at developing a fight. It’s been more based on the plot moving forward, introductions, and world building. Jinn vs Shiki was more aimed at introducing Jinn as a character rather than actually setting up a big fights. That’s why they didn’t continue their fight later in the arc. There also hasn’t been a true villain to be built up since we have jumped arc to arc so fast but that seems to be changing with Drakken Joe. So the series potential is still high but ultimately until we reach a grand arc we won’t get a true taste.

Well said, the series has a unique history, to some extent, focuses on the plot and deepen the characters as the story progresses.

I agree with you, but the problem is that Hiro Mashima stopped pushing Lyon as a villain, and was not pushed enough as a side character during the GMG arc. The only villains in Fairy Tail that potential were Zeref and Acnologia but we all what happened to them in the end.

In my opinion, Hiro Mashima should stop the Fairy Tail spin-offs or any secondary work while writing this story. We all know what happened to Fairy Tail because of this. There are some mangakas who can do two series and pull it off concsistently at the same time like Naoki Urasawa and Takehiko Inoue, but Hiro Mashima has proven that he can’t be consistent in terms of writing.

Wasn't because he couldn't handle both. The issue was he has not much planning in FT as stated many times in interview. He only did more so by fans reaction, not much his own. He actually planning on doing another work, but instead got carried doing more.

He has done multiple works before and got great writing in it like FTZ. So that isn't the issue, just what he has in mind about it. With new adjustments to FT one, he has more freedom to work on EZ while checking on FT one as he just need to say what to do with assistant. Kinda like with Kishimoto when it comes to Samurai 8 and Boruto.

Get the worry, but think he us aware of strain so that way things as they are. He has more room on planning with EZ and fair all around so no need to worry on it.

Kishimoto only supervises Boruto, he doesn’t write it, while Hiro Mashima does write it. Plus, I know he doesn’t plan Fairy Tail, which to me tells me one thing which he’s only interested in making money and popularity from it, not caring if it’s good or bad. Example,
The man never cared to plan the ending of the series.
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

Plus Fairy Tail Zero was a monthly series. Monthly series have more time to thought up, and it was only 12 chapters.
--- Double Post Merged, ---

So it really does not count.

Plus, does anyone think that there will be any arc similarity between FT with EZ? Similar to how Most arcs in Hunter x Hunter are based off the Four Sagas of YuYu Hakusho?

Well RM while better written, didn't sell well and put him in depression, so of course he try on FT on expanded on popularity and sells since it did. Nothing wrong with that since it is a job and again he did more so fans, not his own interest. EZ is his more plan work as mention and stated in interview. FT is what it is, but same came be said on other authors with bad final arcs like Naruto, Bleach, and so on. Of course they are aware of negative reaction as they don't want to be same as their last series. Which you can tell with EZ it is more direction here than FT was more so planned to be short work end of the day.

He doesn't need to write anything. His assistant is doing that. He can mouthpiece him to tell him what to write and draw on characters. Maybe even allow freedom control of him. It is same as Samurai 8 and Boruto. Plus it's biweekly thing. Give him time to think every 2 weeks instead of every week. Giving him space on EZ in the process. So don't think it's a issue as writing in both have been good (more so on EZ), so it's no danger especially Mashima is aware about his past series issues through his characters vocal about it here and there.

I agree, but you have to remember at what year Rave was created. It was during a time when Shonen Magazine was overshadowed by Jump with Hxh and the Big Three. So it’s understandable why RM didn’t get the shine it should have deserved, but it wasn’t that bad since it did get an anime.

It’s true of what you said about Naruto snd Bleach. But in Bleach’s case it was justified since it was rushed.

  • It's not. Same quality from where Fairy Tail left off. I would say it's worse because Fairy Tail had better start.
  • Pretty sure he doesn't consider pof a mistake, if that's what you mean.
  • As a whole this won't be better than Fairy Tail. Fairy Tail had its share of originality even though it copied a lot from Rave Master. This, however, is even more copy and paste with lazy design. No originality left.
Also there seem to be a few chapters out by the time I am writing this,

Coming from Someone who dropped Fairy tail after suffering through it for too long
  • Nothing interesting going on right now.
  • If 20 pages a week is difficult for you, then no.
  • Probably. There's not much established to decide that. Give it more chapters and you will find it everywhere.
  • Yes. More than Fairy Tail.

So more biased opinion over FT than series itself. 47 chapters in it has done things better and different than FT. Idk what or where you coming at it's the same and not doing better.
