everything after Kenshin is a flop, beside another Kenshin
Bakuman sells 1/2 of Deathnote sales
B't X is a "success", but no where near Saint Seiya
Also the fiesta that is Robot x Laserbeam

There are actually more one trick pony in WSJs, and only a handful of multiple hits mangaka
Busou Renkin ended because the author problem with the editor, not because it flopped.
Bakuman was a sucess , is like saying that a videogame sequel need to sell the same as the first game or it isn't a true sucess.
Right now we don't know the whole story with RxL axe, maybe is like big videogame publisher that they spend millions marketing a game and if the profit wasn't that hight and they call it a flop.

Was Robot x Laserbeam really a bomb? I mean putting expectations for the follow up to Kuroko no Basketball aside. 7 volume (1 year run) is nothing to be ashamed of in a really competitive environment.
Per book-rank.net last 2 volumes were still selling around 65-70k in sales (4 weeks) which is not really bad comapred to majority of WSJ flops over the years.

Obviously sales are not everything here as it got crushed by bad reception and stagnating sales (similiar like Double Arts which sold well enough), but from financial sense, I dont think this was a huge loss.

Is the daily ranking already out for the first day of sales of the new volumes? I checked their positions in Amazon.jp sales ranking and Jimoto ga Japan is higher than David-kun, but I don't know if that really reflects their total sales.

Not really surprised, I pretty much expect David Kun to be axed soon as sad as it is. It is a concept that is just more fit to Western audience than a Japanese one. I will hope for a miracle it pulls nice sales, but doubt it.

At this point Gintama has had so many "endings" that I feel like by now fans and readers should already be ready for it.

I hope it 'ends' then immediately announces a sequel starting on Jump+ about everyone's kids or a spinoff or something. So that even though it's actually ending for real this time it still isn't ending.

.
Bakuman is a definite success but your example was wrong.
If a video game sequel or movie sequel fails to make as much or close to that of the original, that's called a failure or, at the very least, a disappointment. There are many instances of movie franchises not moving ahead because the sequel did worse than the original.
Bakuman is a success because it cannot be compared to Death Note sales wise as its a very different genre.

Please 2019, don't claim David-kun as one of your victims. Just let his renaissance flourish!

It will be very interesting how both David-kun and Japan perform, given how the latter is already getting an anime. Would be cool to see how the former's popularity is going in its homeland.

Shoseki ranking day 1 (1-4-19):
David-kun = #66
Jimoto ga Japan = #110

It looks like while neither started out too high, David's first day was higher than Japan's, according to Shoseki's physical estimate. Side note: High Risk Mission Therapy volume 4 being #142 is criminally underrated. I'm thankful it premiered on Jump+ since that saved it from receiving an incredibly untimely ax.

High Risk Mission Therapy is really good. I'm always impressed at how many good manga there's on Jump+. Many of the things that I read comes from there at this point.

RxL did better than that as it sold great numbers digitally.

I think the writer thought it was dissappinting performance considering his previous reception. Consider Akira Amano had success with elDlive even getting an anime and being able to tell her story to completion, while he was basically forced to end the story in like three pages.
