Depends on the movie for me.

Some movies I can rewatch an infinite number of times. Like Jaws or The Thing or pretty much anything where what you enjoy about it isn't the surprise or freshness of the experience.

Question for those who have seen Nymphomaniac: I've never seen the films, but soon there will be a showing of the director's cut, and I'm wondering if it's worth the $ and time... time especially, seeing as the runtime is 5h30... that would surely be the longest showing I've been to.

This is a tough question, this is a polarising movie (both parts) from what I can gather, though this is somewhat expected from Von Trier's moves as discussed re: House that Jack built. I'm like on the fence about the movies, and I know people who love them. 5.5hrs is a long time... lol.

As I said, I already had a couple of films on my watchlist, such as Once Upon a Time in Anatolia which is tagged as "crime" so I'm thinking that might be more intriguing and interesting (despite, I believe, it also being based on true events close to the director), but yeah this is one of those cases where I don't think it might be entirely necessary to watch his films in chronological order, although that might help you get a sense of his approach early on and whatnot.

I mean, the director even stars alongside his wife in one of his films, I think, so it's abit weird and definitely author-like. But umm, yeah at the moment I feel like I could just roll with the next one, we'll see.

That's the thing... I've only seen Antichrist and Jack. At the time Nymphomaniac didn't really appeal to me because all I heard/saw was "it's just gratuitous sex"... Antichrist at least had intriguing visuals and weird stuff going on, you know? Slightly more fantastic and supernatural.

But the timing is curious because just a few days ago I was talking to a friend (who saw/enjoyed Melancholia and Nymphomaniac) and telling him to go and watch The House That Jack Built, because he would probably like it as well.

I'm gonna have to ask him if he saw the extended editions. If not, him and his gf might be interested in going to see it with me, but I reckon 5h30 of film time might also make them think it over.

It's a very long time for sure... I mean, 7 euros for the "experience"/watching 2 films in a movie theater is quite cheap and worth it, but I don't know.

If they're up for it, I might as well, but if not I'll have to do some very profound soul-searching, ha, not so much because of the runtime but rather the actual films in question. We'll see.

One one hand, it's not like there's a ton of movies I'll be seeing in theaters this month. Glass might be the only one, I think (will be seeing it on the 17th, probably the very first screening I can find), so money wouldn't really be the issue here.

I get it that watching Nymphomaniac wouldn't be the same as watching a "slow" film like Tarkovsky's or whatever, but 5h30 is a runtime that anyone is bound to feel at some point, whether they're enjoying the film or not.

I was positive I was going to win a contest that would give me a double ticket for Glass on IMAX, but I guess not ._.
Can't really tell if I was duped or not, though most people tend to think that those "flash contests" are usually just bull: they get your email, your phone number, maybe even a "like" on their social media platforms, but for all you know they might be gifting the tickets to their friends or something, and you'll never know.

Oh well, I'll be seeing Glass tomorrow anyway (no IMAX though), very first showing, and I'll be sure to tag everything with spoilers once I come back, don't want to ruin it for anyone accidentally.

But yeah, it just crossed my mind a few days ago that there really isn't much to lose by participating in those contests (except maybe getting high hopes for nothing) so this year I'll be sure to keep an eye out for those (already participated in one for The Favourite but I'll have to be on the lookout for more), if I can save cash on just one ticket, that would be pretty cool.

Anyway, "Glass", tomorrow, finally, though my hopes are at an all time low. Not to be a downer, but even before the bad reviews came out some days ago, it didn't really surprise me, but the IMDb rating also makes me somewhat hopeful. Either way, it's not like I was particularly "dying" to see this film, but if it's as bad/disappointing as some people say, I guess that'll just make me sad, I guess.

We'll see.

Dragon Ball Super - Broly 10 / 10

Got to see this last night and it's my first Dragon Ball movie to see in theaters and it was great. Now they did use similar story ideas from the previous DBZ movie "Broly, the legendary super saiyan", but they did something different with it that I thought was really cool. Plus, this particular story takes place after the events of the "Tournament of Power" arc. Goku and Vegeta don't really add anything to this movie, there just them as usual as well as other familiar characters like Bulma, Beerus and Whis. I love Whis in this movie and the little time he has, amazing.

Broly and his father, Paragus are the real core of this movie and Freeza is a catalyst to how these two saiyans meet Goku and Vegeta. The fight scenes were done, really, really well and I applaud the animators because they did some really good camera work with these scenes. Definitely different from previous DBZ films. The final fight look great onscreen in theaters and just brings you into it with the colors, sound and everything.

My only real issue (if you want to call it that) is I had to watch it in "English" and not Japanese. I first watched DragonBall in the early 90's in Japanese with english subtitles, so it was something I could tolerate. That was my only real problem, other than that, this was the best Dragon Ball movie made. Highly recommend seeing it in theaters, it's definitely worth it because I notice ticket prices are a little higher than usual for this release in certain states.

The Toy Story trilogy - I loved the first 2 as a kid. As a 'trilogy' I've often thought it to be one of the best. But after re-watching, I don't like the first 2 as much anymore. They weren't as fun or exciting, at times I wanted to skip scenes, but I must say TS2 had a lot of wit I didn't notice before. TS3 was great and is the ideal ending for a trilogy... but now they're making a 4th.

Au Hasard Balthazar - It follows the life of a Donkey and the different people along the way. A lot of these characters have are a little twisted, and use the donkey for their own purpose. This movie was bare, and without a lot of cues and release in scenes/characters. That made the ending really stick out, I was moved quite a bit from it. Idk, it was 'different' for sure. Not a fave movie though, but would like to watch it again.

My friend was kind enough to get me "Climates", which is the only film of his I was missing, so now I can finally proceed in chronological order.
I really hope they get more interesting, for me at least.

The showing is only one week from today, but I think I'll pass.
Turns out that my friend who spoke well about them has already seen the extended versions, so I would have to go by myself, probably.

Also, truth be told, back when those films came out they didn't really interest me that much, and they still don't, to be honest.
I get it that the film isn't just sex, but it feels a bit gratuitous to me to just go and watch a bunch of unsimulated sex and whatnot, especially for 5+ hours...

I don't know, I guess that's just not the kind of "experience" I want to have, at least not right now. If I'd caught the Melancholia showing last month (kinda regret not going) I think I would've been more eager to wrap up the trilogy, but as it stands I feel like it's a hard pass.



So I saw Glass a couple of days ago, been thinking about/discussing it online and stuff...
I won't write anything extensive right away, although I did write a "review" that goes on for 3k+ words, might post my full thoughts if anyone is interested.

I'll just spoiler tag some quick thoughts/impressions, nothing too spoilery but I don't advise reading it if you haven't seen it yet/don't want to be influenced by someone else's opinion, and I'll leave the bigger part of the discussion for when others have seen it/want to discuss it:

So, yeah, I don't think I liked the film. I really didn't. Once the film was over and I left the theater, the more I thought about it and its flaws, the angrier I got.

I want to say it will be "polarizing" (seems that way), but at the same time it seems that there's a bigger number of pissed off fans, though there's a huge number of defenders as well.

Beyond some obvious, terrible plotholes, what happens in the end was just fucking dreadful and baffling, especially when you consider that Shyamalan doesn't intend (he has stated) to make more films in this universe. Very cheap, unsatisfying ending.

I can understand what he was going for, it was a ballsy move on his part and some people are loving it. I, too, might come to appreciate it some more. Shyamalan stuck to his vision, and that's something to be respected, he told the story that he wanted to tell, the way he wanted to tell it.

That's cool and all, but man the whole "hospital" thing absolutely ruined it for me. Should've found a better way to tell the story and wrap it up.

The "twist"/revelation was ass, the movie doesn't deserve to have the title "Glass", and/because the characters don't have nearly enough screentime.

In some character's particular case, the screentime they get is just ridiculous and laughable. There MIGHT be an argument to the film's favor as to why that is, but yeah.

And at the end of the film there's a scene that absolutely revolted and disgusted me. I was absolutely sickened by that turn of events.
Again, "ballsy" move, respect the man for that, but holy shit I can't remember the last time a [blank] scene pissed me off so much.

A lot of people are defending, but I was mad and speechless beyond words.

Regardless, it's as I expected: this was a film that would never be able to meet the "hype", and the story Shyamalan decided to tell in this final part was just bad.

And that's what's so maddening about the film: there were some awesome things in it, especially ACTUAL, deleted footage from Unbreakable. It was so nice seeing that, stuff from nearly 20 years ago that ties so well into this film... but the rest was just bad and ugh, why.

It’s really one of the few things which still keeps me a little interested in the Oscars, so I hope there will.

No surprises really. Not really into any of this year's stuff. Well Roma was great and the animation category is gold. But not too hype this year.

Roma will probably take a lot of awards home, but I honestly don't understand the nominations for Best/Supporting Actress.

The film was very well shot, a technical marvel on many aspects, but the acting? I just don't see it, especially from the supporting actress.

I'm likely to side with the Favourite but it's almost certain that Roma will go for a near clean sweep.

Wondering if Roma can win Best Foreign/Best Picture... has any film ever done that? I don't think so but I could be wrong. That would be fun, but I still prefered Shoplifters, and it's a shame that, once again, South Korea got no love (Burning).

Previously there has been announcements of Jon Bernthal and Vera Farmiga joining the cast (speculated to be playing Johnny and Livia Soprano). Today came the news who will play young Tony Soprano and... it’s James Gandolfini’s son, Michael Gandolfini.

Now, maybe I’m still very hormonal from father hormones after having another kid, but that actually made me tear up.

EDIT: Oh, also Alan Taylor - who directed a lot of great eps of The Sopranos, some of the best episodes of GoT, some great eps of Oz, Deadwood, Seix Feet Under etc - is on to direct, and David Chase behind the script of course.

Previously there has been announcements of Jon Bernthal and Vera Farmiga joining the cast (speculated to be playing Johnny and Livia Soprano). Today came the news who will play young Tony Soprano and... it’s James Gandolfini’s son, Michael Gandolfini.

Now, maybe I’m still very hormonal from father hormones after having another kid, but that actually made me tear up.

I’ve been careful not to get too riled up about this project, but so far it looks like it could get really good.

It's a really weird thing for me though... on one hand you have the show which is like, 80+ hours long, 86 episodes, 6 seasons, but then making a prequel movie feels kinda... I don't want to say "pointless", but it feels strange to just add a "2 hour movie prequel", because 2 hours is nothing compared to the whole series, and I can only wonder how that could be enough time to not only do the series justice, but also explore things and characters in a good way.

If this was a prequel, limited series, it would be fine because you would have a lot more time to explore everything, but as it stands I don't see the "need" of adding just a couple of hours of prequel stuff. One movie just feels like far too little, I don't know.

Glass 9 / 10

Another film I got to see this past weekend and I have to say I was pleased with the conclusion to the officially titled "Eastrail 77 trilogy" that consists of Unbreakable, Split and Glass. In my honest opinion, Glass was very different from the previous two films and that's what made it a great film, especially considering that this particular story had to draw to a conclusion.

Most critics I have stated that disliked the film or the film's ending, but I think the main reason many people didn't favor Glass like they did the other two films is because there was a grand expectation here. Unbreakable and Split were very new and when first released, no one knew what to expect at all and I think that's what made these films better for most people versus Glass.

The three main characters of Glass connected in a way that gives you a perception and perspective of the film and you honestly do not know how this film will end until it "ends". Shyamalan displayed an interesting way once again to tell a story, especially considering the unique formula used here to create a trilogy of stories and I feel this will try to be mimicked in the near future.

Enjoyed the conclusion and will be seeing it again. If you are expecting this superhero / comic book styled film, that's not what Glass is and neither were the previous films and i think, that's what makes all 3 of these films special in their own ways.

As I said, the film looks nice... it's well shot and directed for sure, but when it comes to "Best Picture", I don't know...

This is a kinda weird territory because we're dealing with something based on true events, so we can't really expect things to develop as a "normal" film would, but as I pointed out, I don't think the main actress deserves a nomination, because for the whole movie she isn't much of an "active" participant... she's just there and takes in whatever is happening to her.

So acting/protagonist wise, I don't know, doesn't seem worthy enough of a best picture... I haven't seen the Favourite yet so I don't know what my ultimate pick will be, but that's how I and a number of others feel towards Roma: it's a great film, yeah, but it's missing something.

Like I've said, it would be cool for sure if a Foreign Film also won Best Picture, that would be really amazing, but I don't know. My pick will go for either that or the Favourite, not sure yet.

As long as there's no big upset with Black Panther/Bohemian Rhapsody winning, I'm fine with anything, really.

Well, glad to see someone else enjoyed it...

It just didn't work for me. I understand Shyamalan's idea and what he was going for, but the execution was terrible in my opinion.

Why couldn't The Beast just close his eyes an smash the equipment before fleeing?
How come Mr. Glass can steal - not alter, not tamper with, STEAL - an essential piece of equipment, but no one notices that it's missing? Shouldn't the workers make sure that the machine is working perfectly before operating on someone? So many things in that hospital didn't make sense, like for some reason there being no security at all, and one of the workers getting killed without anyone noticing for hours and hours until the next shift comes along.

I get his "origin" idea, but as so many others have already said, it wasn't an "earned" ending because it just comes out of nowhere... and the worst part about it is that Shyamalan already said he doesn't intend to make more movies, so why include that ending? Not to mention that the whole "omg it's going viral, everyone will know now!" is such a cliché thing to do nowadays...

I really could go on, but yeah. The more I found myself thinking about the film, the angrier I got at its flaws.

The whole hospital thing was just bad and killed the movie for me, it's like Shyamalan barely had stuff to make a film, and you can tell: so many shots with just one character in place, so many close-ups, so many shots that don't show the action going on because "budget"...

I don't hate the film or anything, but it's a major disappointment to end the trilogy on such a note. Literally any other plot for this film would've been better, in my opinion. I just didn't feel it.

Gotta say, considering I just became a father again, and my wife is in the hospital with my son... I probably should not have watched this film right at this moment. The scene where she gave birth to her stillborn child (and everything leading up to it from when her water broke) made me dizzy and I had to focus my breathing for the rest of the film. That part of the film is, I'm assuming, what gave the actress her nomination. But I still can't say her overall performance deserves it..

It's a spectacular film though for sure, and it deserves the Director, Cinematography wins it is almost certain to get, as well as probably Production Design, and maybe Foreign film (though I haven't seen any of the others in that category so can't be sure). It's very likely to win Best Picture as well imo, and it would deserve it if it did, but it's not my favorite of the year, no.

But it's as you said, there really isn't much to the acting. I don't mean this in a "anyone could've done it" kind of way, but yeah.

On one hand, I'm happy for her: it's her first acting role ever, and she got an Oscar nomination (and probably dozens of other awards as well) straight away, and that's awesome, especially for a foreign person. At least she got recognized for it and no one can take that away from her.

But this may turn out to be one of those cases where they just throw her in to give her the nomination and that's it, as it happens so often when they nominate underage actors. Do they deserve it? Absolutely, but the Academy rarely ACTUALLY gives them the win, instead they nominate them as if to say "you're good, keep at it and it'll be yours one day" and I think this is what's likely to happen with Yalitza Aparicio.

But I'd say it's definitely between her and Coleman (Favourite). Haven't seen any of the other roles but I really can't see any of the other 3 winning over those 2.

That and the scene towards the end where she saves the kids, I assume... after that is her only "real" emotional moment, the release, I'd say... but yeah, what made me really "omg" in the hospital scene was that the baby looked so real :/. Damn they really went all out with that stuff, but then again this is the kind of film where you absolutely have to get it all right or else it falls apart.

LOL, as a comparison, that just reminded the painfully fake baby scenes from American Sniper, jesus christ that was hilarious!

Anyway, I can't say for sure whether I'll like The Favourite or not (The Killing of a Sacred Deer was meh for me, but I liked The Lobster), but honestly I'd like to see The Favourite winning the most important awards, and leaving all the technical stuff for Roma, but I don't know if that's gonna happen.

But somehow I don't see Lanthimos winning best director/film over Cuarón... I don't know, will have to check to see each film's path through awards seasons and whatnot.

Still a long ways until I lock down my final picks though.

Gotta disagree with you there. Haven't seen it myself yet, but Glenn Close in The Wife is considered a nigh-on lock for the win by lots of people, and if you look at the odds sites it's between her and Lady Gaga. I'd actually say Yalitza is the one least likely to win, like you said at first it's most likely just a "here, have a nomination".
Never underestimate the Academy awarding great (especially older) actors who have been nominated several times but never won before. That's what Close has going for her (and a stellar performance, if the world is to be believed). And possibly Amy Adams in the Supporting category.

It's one of the ones highest on my list, but one of the few I can't get my hands on. It doesn't play where I live, except at a minor film festival-thingy in March... sigh.
