I'll just say: it's okay to not read a series.

Sometimes it feels like people are forcing themselves to read certain series. That's just asking to end up being disappointed in something.
Seriously, this culture of "I don't like this, but I'm gonna read it anyway and complain" is absurd, and is half the reason why the thread gets derailed into arguments.

The thing that sets Chainsawman apart from the rest for me is that it's just simply unexpected and doesn't take itself seriously. That's all. Fujimoto doesn't give a shit and will just put the most batshit insane weird stuff in there every few chapters, and it makes it exciting to read and keeps me wanting to see what he comes up with next. I don't even care for the story (let's be honest, there isn't really one at this point), the character interactions are just damn fun. It's ballsy and it's raw, and it's something we just don't see in Jump all that often.
Chainsawman really fits Toriyama statement.

Oh yes the usual you hate this manga so dont read it. Newsflash, criticizing something doesn't mean they hate it and threads get derailed by people defending stuff way more than the opposite.

Hell I made a comment about how I dont like Chainsaw and that spawned multiple pages of people telling me im wrong

I feel like endless warring about the quality of X is poisonous in general, both from attacking and defending.

Just because you complain about something, doesn't mean you don't get any enjoyment out of it or see potential. And just because you hate certain arcs/story progressions, doesn't mean they're not worth sticking through to get to potential good stuff later on.

Nothing wrong with disliking something or complaining. Often complaints are due to failing to live up to expectations more than anything, meaning the person at least expected enjoyment.

I find some of the things in life I enjoy most are things I once hated. I love them so much because they subverted expectations.

So, the question I have is...when is the next batch coming, exactly?

I mean, Soma is most likely concluding in about two months, ditto for Hinomaru, and I can hardly see Jump keeping around Saiyuki and Yui Kamio much longer if neither are doing well. Are we gonna get another four pack of new series just two months after the last one?

If I had to guess, in August/September.

Do you guys think manga (focus on WSJ manga if you want) has been getting better or worse in recent years?
Personally I think it's getting better. Looking back on older classics like Rurouni Kenshin and Hokuto no Ken in particular I'm so glad we're over the phase of literally just fighting = plot.

First on my "casual racism".
I find Japan to be the most interesting country in the world. When I said Japan is boring, I was wrong. I should have said (young) Japanese people find exploring Japan(ese history, culture) to not be that interesting. The Wano Arc is full of archetypes that Japanese readers are already inundated with in all other forms of media (Nadeshiko, samurai, etc.)

I'll respond to the rest below, in bold.

BC vs MHA
Yes, a large amount of consensus has been that BC has been superior for the last year or so...because BC was telling the Elf Invasion, a massive arc that brought together tons of plot threads, while MHA was in a smaller arc about character growth. No duh one would be generating more hype than the other.
So, kudos to Tabata for actually being able to write long arcs that are good?
And how come the "character-based drama" BNHA, had such a bad "character growth" arc?

MHA
...Dude, you say that when your fave manga is about a guy who just want to gets laid. Saying "Saving Eri is what matters" is relevant because it's heroic, not "more important".
The characters in Chainsawman have various, differing goals. That makes it interesting.
The only motivations in BnHA are "beat villains" "save people" "get stronger". Not quite the full spectrum of human motivation. Even Naruto has the idea of peace and ending cycles of hate.

Superhero
Dude, what he was arguing is that you're judging the manga on basis of something completely different. Using Chainsawman is silly because, as a manga, it is virtually nothing like MHA in tone or structure.
My point stands. "Don't think this is a valid defense of its shallow characters, poor pacing and contrived storytelling."

The Pokemon Thing
Yet again, I am scratching my head here, because the LoV was always designed to grow as an entity in much the same way as Class 1-A. Your argument makes it sound like you want everything to be developed in a single arc, which the later arcs of One Piece has shown is often a terrible idea because it makes the plot a clusterfuck.
Forget the Pokemon example. BNHA feels disjointed because Horikoshi is mechanically crossing off points on a checklist until events he has planned in the future. This is a valid way of doing things but his execution is poor. He's juggling the elements of his world, and not very well.

I'm overall tilting my head as to why you're still fighting this battle, when very few people agree with you, it's clear no one likes having this debate, and all it does is make you look petty and biased towards "muh realism" (BTW, your argument about Chainsaw Man being realism falls flat when you remember Fujimoto is a film otaku and all his work is inspired by that). Stop it, seriously, stop it.
Hearing others' opinions is interesting. That's why.
Also, more than "muh realism" I like having relatable characters and a grounded story with actual stakes.

Rain Spectre, you got me listening for a moment, then you totally lost me.
While Rica kept name droping, or Supercow spew out biased arguements, I still find myself siding with them.

Also, I disagree with Supercow's so called "casual racist". I think the end of Edo era is really interesting. It is just Oda's hamfisted and cartoonist style, dumbing down while still trying to referencing real life history make this arc a chore to get through.
How were my arguments biased? I'll try to spew more objectively next time.

I'll accept your response dude. I'll admit I was a touch antagonistic myself in the situation, and I think it's best we just leave our differing opinions as it is.

Anyway, regarding your question, I agree entirely. Even the battle manga (I think the argument can still be made Slam Dunk is the best Sports manga) which have aged best from the "Golden Age" still pale to the current roster. It's amazing for example how optional "planning" was for many creators for years.

If I had to explain it best, I'd say that battle manga went through evolution for over 30 years, and didn't really fully stabilize until 2012 or so.

I remember reading that digital sales had surpassed book sales in japan and maybe people are just switching to digital and we have no idea what this represent in term of sales since we haven't got any data on digital

Is this about One Piece? Because it would do nothing, OP's digital volumes don't drop until a month after the physicals.

I mean, if we're assuming some people just don't buy physical and read everything digital, it doesn't really matter when they come out.

What would be the point in doing that? Speaking from experience, the latest OP volumes can be found basically everywhere in Japan. Unless you're abstaining for some deeply personal reason or living in the boonies, there isn't much reason to not just purchase the physical copies.

There are two reasons I fan think of as to why buying digital rather than phisical. First, it's more convenient in terms of place, toi dont have to have a big place.
And, if it's like here in France, it could be cheaper in digital. Here Digitals are half the price

My guess on stuff ending is

- 2 in late July/early August (Soma and Saiyuuki)
- 2 or 3 in October (maybe Zumou, 2 of these new series)
- 2 or 3 in late November (Yui Kamio if it stays low, otherwise whatever else flops from Summer batches)

Though I could see Zumou potentially lasting until early next year depending on where it goes after this match is done. I see it at least doing a couple more chapters for the current match, 3-4 for in between stuff, 4-6 for the final match, 5-6 for post match and more romance stuff, and after that it could be anywhere from 1-15+ for epilogue stuff.

Where'd Yuuna fit then?

I imagine Yuuna and maybe WNL both ending early next year alongside another flop or two, and that'll be next big batch. Yuuna's building up ending stuff but I don't think it's in the real finale quite yet, I think there'll be another arc after the current one to properly end everything.

Now this is a new one.
You're saying I'm judging Chainsawman, Kimetsu, World Trigger, BC etc based only on hypeness and it doesn't mean anything for which series is actually better? And I just don't think BNHA is as hype?
Lolno, I didn't say that MHA isn't as hype, I say that after OFA fight it lost something that make you think with more objetivity .
Most Kimetsu fights have problem in powerscaling, but how the situation is handle made you forgot about their problems and

I neither say that hype is the only measure you have to think a series is good, I said that hype made you minimize their problem (and maximize their strongs points).

In the end, when you are arguing what series is better you need to see their strong and weak points, but what are you arguing is what series you like more, because you are only focusing in what the series you like do right.
So that's why Hype is a problem in all this debate about "what series is better"

Well, besides all the points I've been reinforcing over and over, sure, I'll give it to you that BNHA is also the least hype of all of those. Except (Shiggy hand bomb and Twice kage bunshin) were pretty hype.
Shiggy hand bomb was hype? Even Tetsutesu vs Todoroki or Mushroom girl apparition were more hype than that lol.
But seeing your taste, is obvious that you will find that more hype, and is not a bad thing, tho.
