Do you guys think manga (focus on WSJ manga if you want) has been getting better or worse in recent years?
Personally I think it's getting better. Looking back on older classics like Rurouni Kenshin and Hokuto no Ken in particular I'm so glad we're over the phase of literally just fighting = plot.
First on my "casual racism".
I find Japan to be the most interesting country in the world. When I said Japan is boring, I was wrong. I should have said (young) Japanese people find exploring Japan(ese history, culture) to not be that interesting. The Wano Arc is full of archetypes that Japanese readers are already inundated with in all other forms of media (Nadeshiko, samurai, etc.)
I'll respond to the rest below, in bold.
BC vs MHA
Yes, a large amount of consensus has been that BC has been superior for the last year or so...because BC was telling the Elf Invasion, a
massive arc that brought together
tons of plot threads, while MHA was in a
smaller arc about
character growth. No duh one would be generating more hype than the other.
So, kudos to Tabata for actually being able to write long arcs that are good?
And how come the "character-based drama" BNHA, had such a bad "character growth" arc?
MHA
...Dude, you say that when your fave manga is about a guy who just want to gets laid. Saying "Saving Eri is what matters" is relevant because it's heroic, not "more important".
The characters in Chainsawman have various, differing goals. That makes it interesting.
The only motivations in BnHA are "beat villains" "save people" "get stronger". Not quite the full spectrum of human motivation. Even Naruto has the idea of peace and ending cycles of hate.
Superhero
Dude, what he was arguing is that you're judging the manga on basis of something completely different. Using Chainsawman is silly because, as a manga, it is virtually nothing like MHA in tone or structure.
My point stands. "Don't think this is a valid defense of its shallow characters, poor pacing and contrived storytelling."
The Pokemon Thing
Yet again, I am scratching my head here, because the LoV was always designed to grow as an entity in much the same way as Class 1-A. Your argument makes it sound like you want everything to be developed in a single arc, which the later arcs of One Piece has shown is often a terrible idea because it makes the plot a clusterfuck.
Forget the Pokemon example. BNHA feels disjointed because Horikoshi is mechanically crossing off points on a checklist until events he has planned in the future. This is a valid way of doing things but his execution is poor. He's juggling the elements of his world, and not very well.
I'm overall tilting my head as to why you're still fighting this battle, when very few people agree with you, it's clear no one likes having this debate, and all it does is make you look petty and biased towards "muh realism" (BTW, your argument about Chainsaw Man being realism falls flat when you remember Fujimoto is a film otaku and all his work is inspired by that). Stop it, seriously, stop it.
Hearing others' opinions is interesting. That's why.
Also, more than "muh realism" I like having relatable characters and a grounded story with actual stakes.
Rain Spectre, you got me listening for a moment, then you totally lost me.
While Rica kept name droping, or Supercow spew out biased arguements, I still find myself siding with them.
Also, I disagree with Supercow's so called "casual racist". I think the end of Edo era is really interesting. It is just Oda's hamfisted and cartoonist style, dumbing down while still trying to referencing real life history make this arc a chore to get through.
How were my arguments biased? I'll try to spew more objectively next time.
