Unfortunately, I don't have a proper opinion on JJK. I loved the first six chapters, but it appears Viz is waiting until the December volume 1 release (which I was already getting, but still) to put any more out for those of us who don't want to read scans.

Maybe I'm thinking of something else but didn't Viz publish that back in WSJ? I remember a similar thing in one of the "extra" issues during Golden Week or whatever.

As much as I'm enjoying it, Kaisen has started to feel more and more aimless. I love that Gege does things on a whim, but sometimes you need more structure and purpose.

I don't see it blowing up in the West, but like Kimetsu, it'll depend on how good the eventual anime adaptation is.

Lol "aimless" you can say that the same about chainsawman. Only cuz it's their break cooling off from their heavy battle doesnt make it "aimless".

Before this thread gets any more off topic, which Jump series had the best opening chapters? What elements do you think an opening needs to really hook readers?

Best Chapter 1 for me is tie between Naruto and Chainsawman. For me relatable protagonist is a key element to hook readers

Definitely Naruto, One Piece, Hokuto no Ken and Death Note. The characters should be good and the setting needs to have some weight behind it, so that you as a reader can actually imagine that the series has a lot of things to explore and can still be great in its later chapters.

The most recent one that comes to mind is The Promised Neverland, imo. Easy choice, but that first chapter was quite the hook.

Psyren had a fantastic first chapter with a very strong hook, same for the entire first volume which ended at the perfect spot. I would also agree on Naruto's 1st being very strong (though that was followed with a really bad and pointless 2nd).

More recently Chainsaw Man, The Last Sayuki and, of course, The Promised Neverland.

One Piece & Yu Yu Hakusho had amazing first chapters. YYH surprised me the most with that "death". OP is easily the best first chapter I ever read it establishes the foundation of Luffy's character with that backstory & started off with Roger's speech that shook the world. For adventure series, I love the opening narrations that series like OP/HxH/Toriko have, they're simple but give the readers of what to expect.

When it comes to newer series, while its Jump+, Jigokuraku is very nice too.

World trigger - unique premise how it shows the mc is a > Real weak < while having the second protagonist being a strong mysterious person having the power of an evil being (neightbour) It takes you in to want to read it more


Bleach - while being pretty basic, it showed alot of obstacles and helpless of ichigo what the other world would look like

Honorable mention

Fairy tail - while not being jump, it deserve the praise how hooked and unique it hooks you right away from the setting / characters and powers to want to know more about it. It's an once live time thrope that can only used once or else you will be called the "fairy tail RIP off". Even if you hate it, respect how it influence the structure further in shonen, *cough* Like black clover

Tokyo Shinobi Squad feels like a familiar manga to me
when the focus is on Narumi kai it feels like Bungou Stray Dogs
when the story follow En it feels like Kekkai Sensen

I like both series so let's see where this goes

I like world trigger a lot, but someone saying that its first chapter is good is something we don't see everyday. That whole delinquent thing was boring and cliched IMO
