It's hard to pick favourites, there's just so many to choose from.

protagonist - Yoh from Shaman King, he's just got such a different and relaxed feel for a WSJ mc (it's a shame the writer got so odd, it's hard to understand what's even happening half the time in the sequels)

antagonist - maybe Kumagawa from Medaka Box

I dunno, I feel Death Note was a lightning in a bottle kind of situation supported by a number of elements such as uniqueness and its comparatively very short length. Maybe it could work, but I struggle to think of scenario where a theoretical manga with such a model wouldn't become joyless.
Why wouldn't it work? L and Light's dynamic isn't exactly original. It's clearly inspired by Reinhard and Yang Wen-li from Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu and that series lasted for almost a decade. You shouldn't make claims without any evidence.

Reinhard wasn't a hero, but he wasn't a downright villain like Light was. Anti-heroes would still work.

Did you read the wiki again? Reinhard hesitated in stopping the genocide of 2 million people because of his ambition.

Light killed someone and then instantly decided he wanted to become God.

How is that worse than someone getting tempted to erase the population of an entire planet?

Because Reinhard is meant to be a morally complex character. Light, for all his rambling about making the world "better", is exactly what Near called him, an egotistical mass murderer with a god complex.

Explain how Reinhard getting tempted to commit genocide isn't villainous. You're dodging the main issue here.

Protagonist: Taikoubou and Ushio.

Antagonist: Kumagawa and Dakki. Both are definitely villains, but they also spend half their time just trolling the main cast and taking the piss, so it’s difficult not to love them.

Hoshin Engi is so good because it’s basically just Taikoubou and Dakki trolling each other for half the series with mind games added to the mix.

Jesus Christ, so Light its worse and more evil than a genocidal that wanted to erase a entire planet for personal ambitious just because he killed some criminals and bad people but ended up getting corrupted in the middle? lmaooo seriously, some people never stop to amaze me kkkkk
The worst part is the character actually agrees to commit genocide in the novels unlike the anime where he's tempted. Rain Spectre is pretty much defending a genocidal dictator.

Jacob Chapman deconstructed that pretty cleanly that Light was never "corrupted". As the series itself points out, had Light been anywhere close to a normal human being, he would've thrown the book away the moment he realized what it could actually do. Instead he quickly went on a killing spree while calling himself god.

When did I say I was defending Reinhard's actions? I said he is nowhere near as outright villainous as Light is.

Haven't read Hoshin Engi yet, but I've heard good things about Dakki.

I don't know and i don't care about who is Jacob Chapman. It's been a long time since i watched but Light started as a very decent human that ended up being choose by Ryuuk to get the Death Note, he did what every person would do, keep to himself (don't you dare say you wouldn't to) and maybe start to experiment, if you're a decent person you would obviously go to the criminals, rapists and etc (Light), if not the person would just kill whatever one, but as the story start to progress the policy noticed the patterns and started to investigate and all the "cult" started without Light intention, he got sucked into it and got corrupted. Simple, if i 'm wrong in some details it's because the years.

Now, nothing this makes Light worse or a more evil than a genocidal destroying a entire planet with innocent people because egoistical personal reasons, simple.

L is the antagonist, sorry man. Kira is absolutely the protagonist.

Ehh, no offense but i don't need to read a giant article from 2016 about some writer personal opinion and views about Light and Death Note, i have mine opinions and views and that's it, the point it's you saying that a teenage killing some criminals and after that getting corrupted by the "power of the Death Note" it's a worse and evil person than a genocidal erasing a entire planet full of innocents for egoistical motivations, simple.

To shift gears a bit, a question for everyone:

Who is your all-time favorite Jump protagonist? Who is your all-time favorite Jump antagonist?
Protagonist: Mankichi Togawa, followed by Seiya, Kenshiro, and Momotaro
Antagonist: Raoh, followed by Gemini Camus, Makoto Shishio, and Bakura
