welp \,
too late now

Man, this sucks. To be really honest, Jump was extremely patient with David-kun so nobody can really complain. Plus, David-kun up to now was selling that bad (like 3k only in Volume 3) that it would have been a massive feat to make the sales even passable, so meh.

Sometimes I think RxL deserved a bit more time...
RxL suffered from poor reception later on, which also sucks. I still remember the moment it actually managed to pull of a #1 rank in the magazine at one point, and the subsequent 2nd cover LCP it recieved. Ugh. If anything, it still went on 1+ year, with OK sales to boot, which is still more than majority of WSJ newbies will ever see. It absolutely wasn't an embarassment like Hungry Marie, Bokke-san/Hachi (and likely Kamio Yui) were.

Yeah, I think sometimes expectations are a little warped in regards to sales. Dr Stone is not a failure, it doesn't even have poor sales, it's just a series that doesn't sell like the biggest sellers of the biggest manga magazine around. And maybe it is in fact really popular in the magazine, just not that many people buy the volumes. Wouldn't be that weird.

And who knows, maybe the anime will give it a huge, unexpected boost and this discussion will turn moot soon.

it is a meme but Dr. Stone is just... stoned

it reached its (pre-anime? we'll se soon enough) peaked very quickly, doesn't really fall down, it just stood there, unmoving... like a stone

Look at CSM, JJK and TLS. All three are about monsters/devils conjured from human's fears.
People complain a lot about the amount of demon killing manga in Jump right now, but really their interpretations couldn't be more different:

-Kimetsu's are basically a hybrid of vampires and oni.
-Neverland's are a culture of people who are basically highly adaptive insects.
-Jujutsu's are true "monsters" and are framed as inhuman creatures.
-Chainsaw's are basically just monsters embodying various things and concepts.

The issue is that David is simply a manga which, for rather complicated reasons, can't work in Jump IMO. Pure gags is too little a basis for discussion.

Was RxL ever well received? Because I feel like it only survived as long as it did because of Fujimaki's reputation and fanbase. The sales to my knowledge never really "grew", so once the novelty of Fujimaki being back wore off I guess people just got bored with it and left.

From what I remember, RxL was until a certain time-skip (never read the manga so I have no idea if that skip actually happened).
David-kun is something that imo appeals more to western audience because of the whole character concept and the references. Which showed, clearly (even as a gag, it was more popular than all Taisei, Beast, Higuma, ne0, Yui and Saiyuki combined).

Just to be clear, I'm not complaining. I notice the differences, I just think it's a funny coincidence. Clearly it's a concept that people enjoy, myself included.

The timeskip did happen, but it was so weird that I always thought it was a desperate response to the lack of popularity, not the cause of it (wasn't really following Jump news beyond new series back then). Anyway, the series did in fact get worse after it, but I was never the biggest fan of it.

Who cares? They'll both get axed XP
That depends on how many new series they want to start in the near future, right? The last batch had four so I wouldn't expect the next one to be as big.

So if, for example, it's 3-series batch, and we assume Sayuuki is beyond salvation and take Soma's free space into account, then they'll only need to axe one more thing. That's why I'm curious, this could very well be a duel for survival.

You forgot to include kimetsu in yaiba and TPN.

Problem is....GFC will start in few issues, which will just take the Souma spot anyways.

They're not comparable. I'm referring to the concept of monsters literally spawning from human fears. That doesn't happen in KnY and TPN.

But neither is guilt to jump, after all this manga so successful, even with a flop between them from time to time.
and this does not prevent you from investing in other gender manga like some people should think when they complain about these manga, just look at the young jump also that has manga about demons and others but also sports and others.
And one thing is success, you invest in it.

Hinomaru seems ready to end though.
Higuma vol 2 sell alot for an manga being axed, I wonder how vol 3 will do. Higuma came in the wrong batch sadly. If it was in the saiyuki batch, it would survive

My hope is Hokami returns soon with another serialization soon. I think he's a valuable talent for Jump in the right hands.

The jump could have waited for sales of the second volume of Higuma that is a fact.

People put too much weight on a single data point.
Higuma didn't sell good or was improving really.

Sales for Gokutei Higuma (taken from book-rank)
v01 - 4,297 (4d)
v02 - 4,771 (6d)

in comparison sales for Ziga which considered as a big failure here
v01 - 4,134 (5d)
v02 - 5,774 (6d)

Oh. Well, I think Higuma's failing comes down to a matter of not being able to draw enough discussion out of readers. Too episodic, not enough characters or plot threads. Because artistically and writing wise the series was fine.

Man I really wish both of these series had survived. Especially Ziga.
