Wanted to talk a little about a phenomenon that almost nobody mentions: we read a lot that Jump sold in 1994 +5 million copies. Then that after Dragon Ball and Slam Dunk ended, it lost tons of readers and WSM became the top magazine for first time since 1980. And then magically we see Jump getting a huge lead over Magazine again in 00s, so I wanted to analyze this in 3 parts. Ironically, this ''dark'' period of Jump is where some of its TITAN titles (One Piece, Naruto) begin.
First thing first, Jump copies throught years (until 2005):
I think we are currently at 1,70?
Ok, now the comparison between magazines:
You can see here perfectly the year WSM overtakes Jump: 1997. AND the year Jump recovers back 1st place: 2002.
Let's analyze briefly 3 periods:
Pre 1997.
-Jump roster is composed by Kenshin, Hoshin Engi, JoJo Part 5, Sexy Commando, Midori no Makibao, NuBe, Hareluya II BOY, Tottemo Luckyman, and Captain Tsubasa World Youth-hen. Yu-gi-oh has begun in 1996. Meanwhile, Yu Yu hakusho has ended in 1994, Dragon Ball has ended in 1995, Slam Dunk in 1996, and Dragon Quest Dai no Daiboken has ended in 1996 too. Rokudenashi Blues ends at beginning of 1997 too.
-WSM is literally Hajime no Ippo, Kindaichi Case Files, Boys Be, Shoot!, Chameleon, and Shonan Junai Gumi (which ends in 1996 but the other 3 will last until 2001). WSM legacy in 80s was also pretty small, basically Mister Ajikko.
1997-2002 period:
-Except Hoshin Engi and Yu-gi-oh, rest of Jump titles end in 1997-1999 period. What new titles appear in Jump? I's, One Piece, Takeshi, Rookies, Whistle!, Shaman King, Hikaru no Go, Prince of Tennis, and Naruto. With this roster one thinks: how in Earth WSM achieved 1st place?
-WSM got GTO in 1997, then Love Hina in 1998, and then Get Backers, Rave and Samurai Deeper Kyo in 1999 and Sakigake Cromatie High School in 2000. It seems these titles got really git (specially GTO in the short term. Meanwhile, Naruto for example, started climbing up in 2001-2002.
Post 2002 period:
-One Piece gets quickly consolidated but as I said before, Naruto lasted until 2002 to become a hit. Jump got JoJo Part 6 in 2000, Bleach in 2001 (which also lasted some time to become a big hit), and then Eyeshield21 and Ichigo 100% in 2002, and 2004 would later be the year of Gintama, Death Note, etc. But it was in 2002 when Jump overtook WSM. I think the reason is One Piece was already consolidated as the ''next Dragon Ball'', HxH was gaining popularity, and Naruto and Bleach were getting consolidated as part of the Big 3, while Prince of Tennis and Eyeshield21 were also getting high and Yu-gi-oh was in its climax.
-And what about WSM? GTO ended in 2002, Love Hina in 2001, Kindaichi in 2000, and Boys Be in 2001. Rave lasted until 2005 and Get Backers until 2007 though. What new titles did WSM get in that period? Air Gear and School Rumble in 2002, and Negima, Tsubasa Sakura Chronicles, and Ahiru no Sora in 2003.
Jump overtook WSM, and then the manga global changing situation happened in which all magazines lost readers. WSM got Sayonara Zetsuboso-sensei, Fairy Tail, Ace of Diamond, Yankee-kun to Megane-chan, The Knight of the Area, and Baby Steps in the 2005-2007 period, but it wasn't enough to close the gap that Jump opened thanks to One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, Death Note, etc becoming huge hits. In that 2005-2007 period, Jump just only got To Love-Ru, Sket Dance and Neuro as hits for example, but the old guard was enough.
And after that WSM lost traction continuously (10s WSM hits can be resumed in Nanatsu, 5toubun, Ace of Diamond II, Yamada-kun, and A Silent Voice,, and maybe the Seo stuff (A Town Where You Live and Fuuka); while Jump got Kuroko no Basket, Assassination Classroom, Haikyuu, Shokugeki, Hero Academia, Neverland, Kimetsu, etc).
