My guess with Yui Kamio is that it was probably always intended to become a battle shounen, it's just the shift was meant to be a lot more gradual.

I thought it would look something like Ranma 1/2, with some fights but focused on romance. But no one expected a change with horror elements in between.

Anyone who's read Nura or Illegal Rare was expecting horror elements to show up in some fashion.
Just because nura and illegal rare had horror doesn't mean the guy's next job would go that way.
Sometimes an author changes his style in an upcoming work.
I followed his previous work and was still surprised by the change of kamio yui.

Mission of Yozakura family chapter 01 color spread :super

Great character designs and color choices. Really makes the CP pop and standout. There's a certain quirky feeling to this image as a whole, in a great way.

Mission of Yozakura family chapter 1 is pretty nice. It has action, drama, humor and even love. Some parts remind me to Assassination Classrrom.
AC is the first thing I thought of when I saw this CP.

It’s a much more likely and reasonable scenario to assume that maybe the mangaka simply just intended it to be a supernatural action series from day one, and there is no major shift because of negative reception. It was described as a Supernatural Action from the magazine, likely described to them from the mangaka and his editor themselves, and clearly had supernatural and action elements in chapter 1. And what do you know? it went full on supernatural action
If that's really the case, the job was done even more poorly than if it was a sudden change caused by negative reception.

Whether or not the manga executed the shift well is irrelevant.
The point is, the mangaka called it a “Supernatural Action series”. The magazine called it a “Supernatural Action series”. The licensors called it a “Supernatural Action series”. And it turns out that it became a Supernatural Action series

I don’t get where all these theories of “Jump probably just didn’t want ppl to know it was a romance series, so they promoted it as a Supernatural Action to appeal to more readers”, and “the author probably just made it a Supernatural Action after it flopped as a romance”.

They all said that’s the type of series it was going to be from day one. Maybe the shift wasn’t done well, and maybe it was even done terribly. As someone said above. Maybe poor reception caused the shift to happen less naturally. But I don’t get why ppl a questioning the series shifting to what author himself literally described the series as, and say “he probably didn’t plan that”.

Because it's been pretty obvious how the toc became less relevant since he started as editor in chief, if it was how it was before him, Yaiba (before anime) wouldn't have half of the great positions it had, Dr. Stone wouldn't be pushed so much in the top 5, BNHA would be fighting neck at neck with One Piece for the "1st place" of the toc like it was few years ago before "suddenly" falling to the middle and the list goes on.

The "iconic" series ending can make it easy, sure, but SJ today have two of their biggest series being constantly placed in the middle or sometimes even in the bottom for no reason at all (not like Bleach that was dropping in popularity), while mangas that barelly sell over 100k are being placed higher many times or even in the 1st place, this would hardly happen before Nakano.
you right on that bro, our previous era was a big monopoly, also when the big 3 era was populair. now most manga in jump are seen equally populair for the chiefs cuz its an smarter busniss move

We should do a Samurai 8 first 2 week sales poll once it's closer to release.

Apparently TSS is getting a recommendation by Yasuhiro Nightow. Can't say that's entirely inappropriate, but I honestly feel like it's still a shilling for the wrong series >>
Usually when manga gets recommendations from famous authors survive.

Iirc didn’t Oda recommend Ne0;Lation? That’s probably one of the biggest recommendations you can receive.

I personally don’t think the recommendations are shills, or forced. I think the famous manga artist giving this recommendations probably legitimately like the manga they’re recommending, and want to see it survive themselves.
And it’s still probably still a huge deal.
