So I just want to throw in my two cents regarding Tanjirou as a MC. Of course, this is just my perspective, but there's something about the way Tanjirou empathizes with others that just... resonates with me on a different class than all the other MCs you mentioned. You're right that other MCs have that quality, but Tanjirou always felt very "authentic" and just so "sincere" to me, to the extent that I tear up and seriously wish there were more people like him in the world. That's the thing that stands out to me about him. I actually feel something when Tanjirou shows kindness to his enemies, and I really can't say I feel the same when I'm reading those other manga series. Just my thoughts on the matter though! It's all subjective.
I feel the same. Shounen MCs are all nice and passionate people, but I like Tanjirou for his gentleness and maturity. Back in the beginning of drum house arc
when he's with some little kids and a mortally injured person jumps to his death in front of them, he covers the kids' eyes so they don't have to see the scene of bloodshed
. It's small details like these that make the character for me. It feels like he genuinely cares about people's feelings and not just their physical well-being. The fact he stays grounded all the times adds more weight to his actions too.

I see. Anyway, I think it will end next year as well. Neverland, Kimetsu and probably WNL and Yuuna will all end next year. It's just me or it seems the magazine is always changing nowadays? In 2016 we were saying the line-up had changed completely and now it's almost unrecognizable to the 2016 line-up
That's what I think at least
I think the era of long-running megahits is over. The fact that Yuuna is the fifth oldest ongoing series (not counting HxH) speaks volumes.

Not true. It solely depends on the mangaka and if he/she wants to milk the popularity or not and how long that can last.
Bleach could've ended in the SS arc which was around 160 chapter mark but it got super popular and Kubo decided to continue.
On the other side, Death Note was only 100 chapters long but Ohba/Obata had hinted that they wanted it to end in the first act itself.

About current series, HQ is closing in on 400 chapters, MHA is already 5 years old and can easily last another 2 years (matching Reborn and Toriko in length) with BC not far behind.
Had Toriko's sales been something like TPN or MHA, it would still be here.
KNB could've milked it's sales and still gone on even today. It ended when it was at it's peak with each volume selling 1 million.

So many factors go into a series lasting super long. It just so happened that 1997 to 2004, WSJ got series that would become huge hits with OP, Naruto, Bleach, Gintama. Not counting HxH because its HxH.
The most important factor is you need huge sales to support wanting to milk the series. Without that, a series will just end up getting rushed and cancelled.
There were plenty series during the 00s and before that weren't "long running".

The fun fact is that the 2016 and 2017 titles seem to be close to their endings (at least Neverland, Kimetsu and We Never Learn. Yuuna-san everything can happen, and Dr.Stone dunno but I see it with potential of having more arcs), while the pre-2016 titles seem they have material for run a long time (Black Clover, Hero Academia, let's see what happens to Haikyuu when this long tournament ends, but Haikyuu is only 2-3 months away to beat Prince of Tennis and becoming the longest spokon ever; Haikyuu is also going to enter in the top-10 of longest Jump serializations).

But it looks like Jump does not pressure mangaka to milk their series as it used to be. Neverland has huge sales on par with MHA but it's already on the final arc. Kimetsu's pacing is always fast and not slowing down at all even with the anime's success.

MHA with its other powers reveal feels like it's designed to go on for a very long time, or at least until Horikoshi gets tired of it. I'm sure Horikoshi could find a way to make it last all 3 years of school, are we even halfway through year 1 yet?

Plus didn't Tabata outright say at one point that he'd like to do 700 chapters for Black Clover if he's able to? There's certainly plenty of other aspects to its world it can expand on. It might not ever be a massive pillar for the magazine but I can see it sticking around for a long time as a familiar mid-tier series like Gintama.

Other stuff doesn't seem like it'll last too long but WSJ's been that way, major core battle shounen and certain gag manga can go on for ages while most other manga usually end before ch 300.

Which manga would be in that Top 10?
I agree with you. Black Clover, Haikyuu, Boku no Hero (and oviously One Piece) will see a lot of sucessful manga start and end before they reach their own endings

Still with this story?

BC has the same probability of reaching 15 years of publication as I have to succeed the throne of England ...

We are serious

but Haikyuu is only 2-3 months away to beat Prince of Tennis and becoming the longest spokon ever;
Captain Tsubasa is laughing in his mustache ...

Haikyuu!! already surpassed Captain Tsubasa, tho. Unless you are grouping the original manga's volumes with the Would Youth sequel, which was released in Jump as well

You think Haikyuu will make it to a decade?

it's in the quarter final and the most recent chapter is 362, so lets say the current match ends on ~370
5 chapters maybe in between stuff or current match goes a bit longer (375)
40 chapter semi-final (415)
10 chapter fukurodani semi (425)
5 chapter in between again (430)
then a 40 chapter finals would take it to 470 which would be just about a decade

I feel like there's a genuine possibility that it'll end on its 10 year anniversary.

All his series, not only the original manga.

All his series, not only the original manga.
Oh, I see. Idk if thats fair though. If we go by that way, the biggest sport manga of all time is Dokaben, with 205 volumes counting all 4 series. That's even bigger than Kochikame!
What even is the biggest spokon without sequels? Ippo?

I'm not up with the current Haikyuu chapters but I always thought it would end in its 10 year anniversary. I think it's very possible.

Someone correct me if I get something wrong. This would be the top-20 of Shonen Jump longest titles.

1. Kochikame - 2000 chapters
2. One Piece - almost 1000 chapters
3. JoJo - 753 chapters I'm only counting Parts 1-6 that have been in Jump. With Parts 7 and 8 JoJo should have over 900 chapters, hasn't it?) (If you also discard Part 6, is 595 chapters the 5 parts)
4. Gintama - 704 chapters
5. Naruto - 700 chapters
6. Bleach - 698 chapters (686 chapters + the 12 Pendulum chapters)
7. Dragon Ball - 519 chapters
8. Pyuu to Fuku! Jaguar - 438 chapters
9. Rokudenashi Blues - 421 chapters
10. Katekyo Hitman Reborn - 412 chapters
11. Toriko - 397 chapters
12. HunterxHunter - 390 chapters
13. Kinnikuman - 387 chapters (it has in total 678 since is still running, but original Shonen Jump run was 387 chapters)
14. Prince of Tennis - 379 chapters (with New Prince of Tennis which is still running, it would climb to 632 chapters, but New Prince of Tennis isn't serialized in WSJ).
15. Yu-Gi-Oh - 373 chapters
16. Haikyuu - 363 chapters
17. Captain Tsubasa - 356 chapters (if you add World Youth-hen 145 chapters which were also run in Weekly Shonen Jump, then it rises up to 501 chapters. With all the Captain Tsubasa sequels, it reaches the 950 cipher, but they aren't run in Jump)
18. Dragon Quest no Daiboken - 349 chapters
19. City Hunter - 336 chapters
20. Eyeshield21 - 333 chapters
21. Shokugeki no Soma - 315 chapters
22. Sakigake Otokojuku - 315 chapters

---
NuBe has 276 chapters. If you count the Neo sequel, it reaches 394 chapters, but Neo is in another Shueisha magazine.
Saint Seiya had 246 chapters. If you count Next Dimension (which is in permanent hiatus), it reaches 336 chapters, but Next Dimension is run in Shonen Champion.

I see Haikyuu ending in 8th place very easily as minimum.

Why is everyone so certain that we're going to get three years of school?

I don't know the exact chapter count, but shouldn't Jaguar be on this list? It ran for a pretty long time

Didn't Bleach have more chapters than that? You know, the Turn back the Pendulum chapters?
686 (final chapter) + 12 pendulum chapters = 698

Jojo is in mid 900s right now with the last 150 or so being released monthly. It has 125 volumes.

Curious, no one Jump series had ever stopped at 50 volumes....always before and only rarely beyond.

Jojo is in mid 900s right now with the last 200 or so being released monthly. It has 125 volumes.
He was counting only the shonen series of Jojo I suppose.

Only 20 volumes

I suppose so.
