What makes you think the tastes of the Japanese will be drastically different in this regard?
That in Japan, unlike the West, Black Clover is very popular both as a manga and as an anime despite the fact that at least initially, the animated series in the West was seen as pure garbage.

Today, a new Jump+ manga "How to Make A Good Coffee" (based on the novels by Yuka Murayama) has started. 4 people collaboration.

A situation where anime studio adaptation is at fault for lack of growth is when their choice on how to approach the story and which demographic to aim for counters the actual story. Case in point is Toriko. Toriko could've done KNY level sales at the very least, if its studio didn't censor it for kids and change story elements.

I'm still mad about that. The Toriko OVA was amazing, which was also made by Ufotable, it really knew what made the manga great, although it did change the artstyle. However the kiddie anime still gave it a massive boost and backlog sales, it was selling crazy well in 2011, the year the anime started, making it into the top 5 of the year, did even better than KnY is doing now I think. But by next year without the backlog sales it dropped by 35%, although the volume sales did grow significantly, almost reaching 500k, but never breaking it. But by 2013 it was all downhill from that. I still think the anime timeslot gave it huge exposure, and that it was the change in the story's focus that turned off people, going from short crazy adventures to more dramatic plot and character focused arcs, even if those were excellent too. Too bad they didn't come back for the Gourmet World.

There is no point dwelling about past adaption lol. Ufotable could give Toriko a fat animation fight and only 1 season 24 episodes and that's it no more episodes.
Because you can use the same arguments for pretty much every anime that did not get a significant boost. At the end of the day a boost is still a boost.

If people think that an anime with good production values results with a good manga boost, then they should take a good hard look at Vinland Saga's situation.
Eh. Vinland Saga is not really a good comparision since the last Vol 22 released before the anime started. So, let's wait for Vol 23.

Kaguya-sama also had a fantastic anime adaptation, and while it didn't deliver in backlogs, it had some visible boost. Same thing could happen here.

It is odd to see an anime made by studio that also did AOT not gaining much buzz, not even outside of Japan though, leaving the sales aside. It doesn't get as much talk as it should.

I think Ufotable had plans on adapting the Toriko manga into an actual anime. I know OVA's and such, especially for Jump Festa are contracted by Shueisha but Ive seen that Ufotable are fans of the manga. They carry Toriko volumes in their library (mobile library?) even in 2018

Not only that but Toriko OVA ED to my surprise were filled with Takeshi references, whether they're background characters or seeing Takeshi at the end of the OVA. It felt like Ufotable were fans of the series and/or Shimabu's works. The biggest perk would be seeing the world of Toriko animated by Ufotable. They excel at doing backgrounds/visuals more so than their animation IMO. Toriko under their hands would've been great, even if they only did a season or 2 and stopped lol. I think a lot of fans would die to see Toriko vs Tommyrod animated by them.

Lmao can you imagine the cooking festival arc getting a movie treatment by Ufotable? Bruh :clap2:clap2:clap2

He isn't downplaying its success. On the contrary, you're downplaying Kimetsu's achievement in an attempt to externalize the blame for BC's inability to do similar sales.
Sure a better anime studio might have pushed its sales a bit further but it definitely would not achieve anything close to what KnY achieved.

BC got a decent anime adaptation. Or are we forgetting how Attack on Titan had a low budget adaptation with many still shots but still managed to become a cultural phenomenon, not just in Japan, but also worldwide? Tokyo Ghoul had the same studio and despite the negative response from manga fans in general about the adaptation, it still pushed TG's sales to amazing numbers. If your material is strong enough to get people talking, it will.
How the hell is AoT's adaptation low budget? You're tripping g.

I dunno why everyone is fellating Yozakura, the only thing it has going for me is the character designs. There are no stakes and it's another pointless save the heroine arc. Mitama is amazing though, been funny since the beginning.

Also, no funny manga after Sket? Are you joking? Gintama stayed, which was always better then Sket. Also Saiki. And Astra is amazing.

Also, I predicted 400-500k sales for KnY back in January, GOTTEM :verily

AoT was definitely low budget. It was just a very well done low budget adaptation. Half the scenes were just still shots and reused shots and they focused their budget on the more important stuff. Also, the art with the thick lines and color pallet they used for the anime helped to not make it seem low budget. The animators knew their job quite well. Whoever they had. There was also the report that the studio needed more animators.

Same. Although it has now surpassed my expectations given how its closing in on 600k.

He isn't downplaying its success.
If he wasn't downplaying black clover's pre-anime success, then he definitely was overstating kimetsu's. Either way, it was an inaccurate comparison. The point of my reply was to correct that.

On the contrary, you're downplaying Kimetsu's achievement in an attempt to externalize the blame for BC's inability to do similar sales.
Sure a better anime studio might have pushed its sales a bit further but it definitely would not achieve anything close to what KnY achieved.
I tried to word it so as not to come across as downplaying kimetsu's success because, as someone who's been following it since the early chapters, I'm very aware of it's reception pre-anime, which made me even more ecstatic to see the amazing reception after the anime. It's because of that awareness that I think it really would not have done as well with an average adaptation like black clover got. Like I said, there were several popular comments about people saying they got into it because of the ufotable name, or they chose to stick around through the admittedly standard early arcs because of the visuals and audio. If it had gotten an average adaptation with a generic shonen soundtrack, standard voice actors, and maybe a few standout visual shots, I doubt it would've gotten as big as it did.

As much as I am a fan of kimetsu, I was pretty cautious about my expectations when the anime was announced. I was honestly expecting a standard level adaptation because, as bad as it sounds, I didn't think it "deserved" an adaptation as good as it got because of its sales. It wasn't a hit from volume 1 like MHA and JJK (which I'm hoping for a good adaptation). I figured that if a breakout hit like MHA got the quality it did, then there was no way kimetsu (with it's less than stellar beginning) would get an adaptation on par or arguably better. Call it cynicism, pessimism, whatever, but that's just how I viewed it. Needless to say, I was more than pleasantly surprised with what we did eventually get, an amazing adaptation.

Likewise, I think that if Black Clover had an adaptation on par or close to kimetsu's quality, it would've been better received and have a better boost. Good pacing, consistent animation, maybe a better voice cast for asta (since his incessant screaming is what made me drop the anime and just stick with the manga). Would it have guaranteed a bigger boost? No, but it definitely could have helped.

Attack on Titan is a phenomenon on its own. The first episode was extremely gripping for casual and avid audiences with its visuals and thrilling story opener. It's honestly no surprise that it blew up with even non-anime watchers. Plus, the character designs weren't the standard anime designs that typically turned non-anime viewers away.

I'll give you Tokyo Ghoul, though. I don't know enough to make a conclusion about it (I don't even remember much about it aside from the first episode). IIRC, there was a lot of skipped content, so I wouldn't doubt if word of mouth helped boost the volume sales because of the skipped content.

No anime in 2016: 4,278,599 (only RE)
No anime in 2017: 5,303,514 (only RE)

Yeah. Wonder what was up with it..... Care to elaborate, @Buranchi?

BTW, in case some MHA fans have been out of the loop, don't expect the next scanlated MHA chapter to come out at the usual time. Given that the official translator took much longer than usual to translate it, don't be surprised if the chapter drops late friday night/early saturday morning, depending on where you live.

Guys you can keep arguing over whether a good adaption can elevate awareness over a bad one but its never been 1:1. By the end of the day what entices people to read the material is based on interest in the story, characters and art not neccessarily how the anime presents them. Trust me when I say there's more bad adaptations that go on to become top sellers than their are good ones but that was mostly due to having elements that made them appeals despite their shoddy adaptations whereas a good one can defer people even more, Dr. Stone and Fire Force are good examples of shows with good adaptations not getting much attention since the story and cast don't click with audiences or entice them to buy it in drones despite their respective adaptions being perfectly fine.

Kimetsu has a solid chance to take the first place in overall manga sales this year. It sold almost 2 million copies just from the backlog last month.
