Actually I think go is easier to sell than shogi. There is no different kind of chess pieces with fancy rule for each of them. Also, shogi is the most complex version of chess compare to the western or chinese one. It is hard to complete explain its rule without boring people to death. Meanwhile, the concept of go is simple, you surround your enemies to win.Go isn't shogi or Othello or reversi (it's actually very different), but the argument holds, I think. If a board game manga can work, of course others can. And go may actually be harder to sell to a young audience.
Also there is nothing to brag about for being a contrarian like how you used to brag about not liking kaguya in a WSJ threadI also find SxF to be one of the most overrated titles Ive read but pretty much its the cutesy stuff is what makes it popular. There's nothing to brag about its writing tbh
. The greatness of SxF writing lies in its simplicity or I could say elegant. Other people above me already point it out: each characters with distinct personality, each with their own goals and great chemistry with each others. However, what impress me the most is author's clear inspiration from cold war. At a history nerd, while the setting is pretty bare bone, it still made me want to learn more about its world and compare to the real history.
