Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

i dont see why a magazine targeted towards boys shouldn't have stories where boys love on boys, especially considering boys that love on boys are part of the readership of jump. Only makes sense.
Yh I get you. But then thing is there are already magazines where boy on boy action is the norm. So why put it in jump. Like let's be honest, most of the jump readers are guys and most of those guys will probably be straight. So why got have a girl on girl action manga instead xD Something like flip flappers.

So because I was bored, I decided to add up the total amounts of the series that sold this year. Using just the established manga, including World Trigger, Shokugeki, Jigokuraku and Spy x Family and excluding Hinomaru and Yuuna, I first tallied up total copies and found that it was about 51.8 Million copies.

So, from there, I multiplied the number by the amount of yen each volume is sold for, which is standardized at 440 Yen, though my calculations didn't account for cases like Soma Vol 36 which sold for more. Since I assume at least part of the revenue for sales goes to the retailer, I halved the number at 220 Yen, though the number could easily be different, so correct me if I was wrong. Anyway, doing that got me 11.5 Billion yen, which converted to US dollars is just over $1 Billion.

Bare in mind, this is just the physical sales of a bunch of ongoing series. It doesn't account for the final volume of Gintama, digital, or a good number of other things like the dozens of B-Grade Jump+ manga. With just the physical sales of 14 series, Jump was able to make over $1 Billion.

Damn.
For publisher revenue, Square Enix producer said they earn 150 yen per copy so it is probably the same for Jump

For curiosity how big for WSJ is China market, I heard more and more revenue come from China to anime companies. Do WSJ in future can consider China censorship.
I am not sure about how the manga doing there but WSJ anime are really popular, Kimetsu have more than 300 Million views on Bilibili for example.

I can be wrong but seeing how Shueisha and Shonen Jump are so big in Japan and around the world, i doubt that they would ever need to precisely try and please China when it comes to manga.

Different industries BUT take the movie industry as an example. The chinese market has become so big that the revenue from that market alone can sometimes save a movie from being a complete loss to a decent hit.
Heck, India's (Bollywood) highest grossing movie got more than 60% of its revenue from China because that particular actor is super popular there. A lot of Hollywood movies seem to do differently in China than they do in the US or elsewhere. So movies and companies have also started prioritizing chinese releases to become big events.

Again, two different industries, sure. But it can be used as a case study to know how, in the event the Chinese manga market becomes significantly big, it could influence the output from Japan. Shueisha who is driven by profits might compare it to a dwindling teen population in japan and make decisions based on that.

Not really wanting a BL series, no. Everything has a place, and there's no lack of BL magazines. Also, yes BL manga does target women. If they're gonna have a BL manga, jump plus would be a lot better place for it.

But I would really like to see a series with homosexual boy as a MC. One that doesn't focus on romance or LGBT issues. Maybe an action series like Ajin or Tokyo Ghoul with a gay lead.

I understand why they don't do it though.

So this new Jump app lets you read the magazine with friends...?

Seems the whole idea of the app consists of gathering a number of friends and depending on how big the number is, you can read series from the magazine every week. Only for Japan, I guess. Those designs are cute tbh.

Yes this at the very least, its a very open and under-served creative area and there's so much that can be done. Like Owari no Serafu is basically it with Yuu and Mika, just needs to be explicit about it.

Or why cant we have a gay lead in a sports series.

Nak might be a weak enough EiC to bow down to the communist Chinese like Disney and others do. But I hope I never see it.

On a lighter note, Zipman preview pages looks great. Hopefully it's quality and it resonates with the readership.

Shonen Jump included Hachimaru from Samurai 8 in the new app promotion and stuff alongside the other main characters, so i think it tells enough about the manga status at least in the moment:

By the way, cute designs

For real Its painful. Has to be the most unfairly treated manga in history. They all just bullying tabata
Also has the do with the lack of pages per chapter, cant keep your fans hyped with lack of content.

I hope tabata will soon recover

I honestly wonder how a new romance manga in Jump will be able to find success. WNL was able to do well in large part to being something of a replacement for Nisekoi, but it's largely shown itself as just a mid-card title while competing series Quints and Kaguya have utterly trounced it in terms of popularity. If Jump wants another romance hit, I think they'll have to something different this time.
Trust me, you don't have to think hard when it comes to that.

Just have an iconic/clean artyle & engaging females that somewhat feel true to their character with a bunch of lewds.

- wait for horny fans

No one wants to read a BL action manga in jump. No thank you
BL?

These other total numbers by series posted, are they officially released by Oricon or is something made by someone using the known sales by public? because for example, Boruto has 600k, but it had 3 volumes released this year that i believe are over 200k copies + 1 volume that was released on November 2018, so part of the sales would be counted for 2019 and also the backlog, so the numbers doesn't seem like they match.

I am 100% certain most rational minded people can read a story with a gay lead and find it entertaining and enjoyable. Gay/Ace/Pan/Etc people read stories with Straight leads all the time and don't go "ew the lead is het? are you kidding me, get this unreadable het garbage away from me!" I am infinitely sure are gays in this very thread that read shonen jump mangas.

Volume 6 was released in October and volume 9 only sold 150k while it was on the charts. It matches.

I'm confused. What is this about?
My og comment is reference to how the series was dumped on a messy studio just to try for the "naruto crowd" then you have CR's pure stupidity with that "king of shounen" bs which hasn't done a major thing for manga sales. Sure the anime ranks high but I consider the manga sales waaay more important.

Yeah.

However, the problem is that due to our cultural environment there are still too many men who feel discomfort (or even repulsion) at the idea of gay male romance. Japan isn't better in that aspect.

The magazine does not want to alienate this audience, so they will not show a male gay MC (at most, we have shiptease between male characters that its fanservice for women).
