Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

I might be the only one on the planet to say this but I like REEEEEAAAAALLLY liked the first chapter of Zipman. It's because of the backstory. It just really resonated with me.😭

Actually...who wants to bet that the WNL CP next week is going to start a series ending countdown? Because it's been blazing through the last months of the school year.

I just noticed I tapped TPN by mistake... The series is off this week so I'm not sure why it's in the poll anyway though.
Because I forgot it was off, and the Steelers-Browns game was on when I made it, so my attention was elsewhere.

I removed it from the option, I'm not sure if that'll grant you an extra vote. Let me know.

didn't seem to but it's fine. WNL was going to be my 3rd choice and I really only cared about numbers 1 and 2.

I didn't expect ZIPMAN!! to be translated to Spanish with even a new freelancer translator for the platform, it seems they have high hopes for the series.
Also, there's another series that will be coming to Spanish MANGA Plus soon, finally some more stuff will be added to it.

Nah, you're not the only one. I actually liked it and got hooked by all the twists. It does have a lot of similarities to MHA and this got me kinda uncomfortable sometimes, but the MC is way more likeable than Deku IMO. Since we are comparing them, for me this has a stronger start than MHA and I'm really surprised it wasn't that well received here.
Also, I'll go further to say I was waiting for, like, two years for a series with a strong start like this. The first chapters of newer series in this timespan felt kinda bland or appellative over the top to me. Most of them grew after it though.

Edit: false cognate

Yeah I would agree, well apart from Chainsaw man that was a really strong start imo. But for me, yeah Zipman has had the strangest first chapter this year.

Edit: lol, Zipman and Chainsaw man

I doubt it, there’s still another exam the cast need to take and assumably a final arc after that, still a couple of months of chapters at least.

For those who may want to add to their list, Zipman already is in MyAnimeList database.

I did genuinely enjoyed the chapter and the characters as well, tho I do want to keep my expectations under check

I don't think so. There's still the travel to happen. If that countdown happens, it'll be only in 2020.

Also, I think the polls should be on monday, because that's when Yunna is out. :P I can never vote on it since the translation is only out there.

Zipman's debut is a very competent one with solid art, but it also feels... "standard" to me. There's not a lot about it that feels unique to me yet, and a lot of WSJ's recent successes have had a feeling of "there's nothing currently running that's much like this". Obviously there aren't any other mech manga in WSJ itself right now, but I don't know if that's enough for Zipman to really stand out.

That said, I like the character designs and some of the interactions. I think there's potential for the concept to fully grab me, so I hope it gets there.
I'd say it's probably one of the more solid starts in recent years. And I think there's a good chance it'll stick around since the author is already planting the seeds of the series' myth arc. So long as he keeps the storyline consistent, I think he'll be fine.

It's pretty clear what I mean by Zipman having a shonen veneer, it tries to present everything as a heroic or epic or super high-energy portrayal as if that is what makes good shonen storytelling as opposed to that being a byproduct.

If Zipman is a success, it makes me worry that newer and newer generations of storytelling are going to become more and more shallow.

How exactly is that different to earlier generations of Jump manga?

Zipman has really nice art but the first chapter felt so generic. Its pretty hard to care for the characters. I have read much worse first chapters lol so I will stick around.
They could make a yankee manga that's takes place somewhere outside Japan. Personally I would love to see a British Roadman manga. I'm sure that would do well cause it seems japs love western stuffs 🙂
There's quite a lot of western themed series out there. With Aladdin being a smash hit in Japan and one of the top grossing movies of 2019 in Japan, it makes me want to see an Arabian themed series (One Thousand and One Nights). I think it could do very well, similar to Magi I would say. Anything but western...theres so much at this point.

A manga based on Egyptian Mythology would be really interesting. Yu-Gi-Oh! did it before, but it had more of a "High Fantasy" element to it, with few allusions to real Egyptian Mythology save for two of the Egyptian God Cards.

Kinda surprised no one is talking about Yoru wo Higashi ni.
It’s a very good manga with great art, lovable characters, an interesting setting and many other things. I recommend you to check it out, the first three chapters are available on the MangaPlus app.

I wonder if it will get any recognition in the future, it deserves it.

Yes it would be. It would be a breath of fresh air even with titles like YuGiOh/SDC. I welcome it & it can definitely be just as successful if not more successful than a western themed series. Take Jigokuraku for example, the chinese folklore/mythology that it uses is fascinating and adds another layer to the series.
